    If you want completly dark photo (background) you should start with the lowest posible ISO. Lower ISO = better photo. Then you should change the f number, probably it would by f 18.

    Dear Eric, How about if I want to have a shallow DOF around 3.2? Get the eyes sharp but throw out the ears. Wouldn't that wide-open aperture make the background visible? Could we compensate by a higher Shutter Speed? I would assume you cannot go higher than 1/320 of a second with the Sync Flash Speed as in without flash which could go up to 1/4000 s or 1/8000 s. Thanks

    I was shooting this technique in the house the other evening. One thing you didn't mention was that the subject to background distance. It doesn't work as described if your subject is right up against the background. I found at least inside about 6ft is the minimum distance from subject to background as long as light isn't spilling from your gear to get the desired results. I've been using the yn560 III flashes (I have 3) with the 560-TX controller on the canon 60D it also works on my Pentax K30. The combination is extremely reliable, the only problem I've ever had is when I didn't turn on the 560-TX it took me 5 minutes to figure out my stupidity. I love not having to go to the flash to adjust the Power, turning on and off groups, or flash zoom all can be done from the 560-TX. One question I have is about your brolly. Mine has a very short shaft and yours seems to be longer which I'd find useful could you tell me the brand or where you picked it up? Thanks for your time and effort it's much appreciated.

    Hey Eric, thanks for this awesome technique tutorial. I was always wondering how other photographers managed to pull it off. I got a question though. What would you recommend as a substitute for a reflector? Maybe just the regular flash mounted on the camera and bounce off the ceiling? Or having someone hold my flash and I can set it to slave and have them point the flash where I want?

    ***** Alright. Thanks Eric. I just did a little test shots with a random coffee can and just held my flash at a different angle and followed your steps. Though the backdrop isn't completely black since I'm in a confined space, the background is definitely dark and with post editing, I can make it fully dark but when I get out on the field in an open area, I wont need to post edit to make it completely dark. Your tutorial really helped. Thanks!

    You can not get the look, you can get most of the power but wouldnt look the best. Give it a try, off camera flash and diffusion is pretty must essential

    Hey yes it would. Since the strobe is more powerful you wouldnt have to use as much power over a speedlight. Yup it will work fine.

    Hello my friend!!!If I want to use this for a whole body portrait(with lighting from one side),do I need a very strong flash? I have a Metz 52 AF-1 (GN:52)...Would this be OK outdoors? Thank you very much!!!

  • @Eric_Rossi

    @Eric_Rossi

    10 жыл бұрын

    Hey! Well this techinique is really good for outdoors. The issue is power from a speedlight/flash. Maybe if you have two flashes to light the body it could work. A strobe would probably be best.

    I've got a canon 70d, a 50mm f/1.8 and a canon 430ex ii flash. My camera settings are 1/200 shutter speed, f/22 aperture (which is as dark as I can go) and ISO 100. The background is still not completely black after adding the flash. I've had the flash as low as 1/32 and as high as 1/1. Is there something that may be doing wrong or could there be an issue with my inability to go darker with my aperture?

    +PJurmaine Productions Hmm it seems like you are doing it right, maybe the flash isnt strong enough on the 430 even on 1/1 not sure without using that setup. Is it 90-95% blacked out though?

    +Eric Rossi Yes. I'd say it's about 90% blacked out. Just trying to figure out what would be my next step to get it fully black. I'm wondering if it's the lens or flash itself that is restricting me. Thanks for the prompt response.

Its coming jet black too when shooting without the flash but the movement I use the flash I get ambient colors :(. Please suggest me what I am doing incorrect.
