Black Lives Matter: Crash Course Black American History #51

In the final episode of Crash Course Black American History, Clint Smith teaches you about the Black Lives Matter movement. We'll discuss some of the major events that contributed to the rise of BLM, including the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and George Floyd, and the way that social media was utilized by Black organizers to gain support for the movement.

    I'll be the first to ask. As a Black American who was skeptical of the movement from the start; are there any accurate sources that show where the funds donated to BLM have been distributed to? I believe recently like this year or last year recently a headquarters in AZ was bashed for not distributing back to the black community which doesn't help the cause of helping black lives matter. Overall informative video besides that aspect not being covered only that is rose awareness of the inequality still faced by Black Americans.

    If all you are worried about is money then you missed the point of Black lives matter and are no better than the slave masters who saw us as nothing more then wealth builders for them. Therefore, you didn't learn anything from this whole black history lesson.

    We live in a capitalist society, so it's inevitable that individuals take advantage of a life-changing amount of money. The important point is that regardless, making contributions to the BLM movement requires more than just cash money donations.

    Thank you to the writers and researchers, but also so very much to Clint Smith. No Crash Course series to date has required quite so much of the host. I'm so grateful for your honesty, willingness to share parts of your personal story, and for taking on the enormous burden of teaching this history (even if only at an introductory level) that all Americans need to understand in order to keep us working towards a more just world.

    I second this, but for anyone who hasn't watched it, Knowing Better's recent 2+ hour video on the topic ("They Were Just in the Way | Indian Removal") is really good, and I think anyone who has enjoyed this series would appreciate it! Knowing Better's approach is very much in line with the approach here, with a clear style and focus on the details of the history and the ways the common narrative is both unjust and wrong (though with somewhat more sass :P).

    There's a difference between BLM the organization (which was one of many organizations, iirc) and BLM the movement. Even if all of those organizations were gone, the movement would remain.

  • @yawpitchroll

    @yawpitchroll

    There isn’t one BLM organization, there are multitudes of organizations, and, as this episode makes extremely and undeniably obvious, the movement isn’t, by a long shot, just composed of members of any (or all) of those organizations… thus anyone raising allegations against BLM isn’t raising an important point, and certainly isn’t raising a well-targeted one, unless they do the homework to identify a specific organization and a specific allegation to be addressed. Or, in other words, what allegations, specifically, would you like talked about? And, while you’re at it, who made them and where did you hear of them?

    Thank you for this. When I left New York City in 2019, after 5 years of weekly protests trying and failing to get justice for Eric Garner (who was murdered one block from my house), I felt like I had failed him. Then, to see millions of young people marching around the world for George Floyd and finding justice, I felt all the earlier years work was worth it. Sometimes, the generation that fails, inspires the generation that wins. And the work continues.

The unflinching look at all the horrors that have been visited upon the Black community since the first slaves were brought to Jamestown, as well as seeing how everything builds on what came before - nothing exists in a vacuum. Thank you, Clint Smith and Co. for this copiously informative, insightful, and entirely engaging project, "Crash Course: Black American History". Thank you for your commitment and consistency. This body of work is a legacy worth being proud of - the telling of our stories which far too infrequently are told or honoured - and all in a single, authentic anthology. Thanks again. Many blessings.

    Thank you for this amazing series. Thank you, Dr. Smith, for these great lectures and for sharing your insights. I hope we continue to see more of this depth and nuance for other important topics of a similar nature in future courses.

    I've really appreciated this series. My grandson is in high school right now. In Florida. I want to share this series with him. Black History is important no matter what our governor says. 😢
