Black, Latino Firefighters in New York City Settle Long-Running Suit over Racial Discrimination

www.democracynow.org- Some 1,500 Black and Latino applicants to the Fire Department of New York have settled a long-running lawsuit with the city and the Justice Department over racially discriminatory hiring practices at the nation's largest fire department. The agreement grants almost $100 million in back pay to those impacted. When the case was filed in 2007, the Fire Department was 90 percent white, even though African Americans and Latinos totaled half the city's population. Under the new agreement, the Fire Department will be required to change its recruiting policies in order to increase diversity and make the department more representative of the city's population. We discuss the settlement with two guests: Paul Washington, past president of the black firefighters group, the Vulcan Society of Black Firefighters, and captain of Engine 234 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn; and Richard Levy, the case's lead attorney.

I call out BS on this , This sounds they wanted people with enough basic knowledge because firefighters have to deal with public every day and this guy can not even add/divide numbers under a 100 . This is either BS or this guy is a horrible representative . You can not have idiots or meh people interact with public - that should be a rule with every gov. job so more tests not less . Lets not kid our self's there is little firefighter has to learn except being fit - Theory they have to learn fits in a one book ....

The past is the past. Want to learn it the hard way? Keep dwelling on it and watch your life go by. Instead rise up, be smart, educate yourself and if you want this job with the FDNY, study, study, study and run your heart out for the physical exam so you can past the test. Opportunity sometimes only exists for someone for a short period of time, reach out and take it, better yourself. Trying your best, pass or fail will be something no one can take from you. Whining and hiding behind a judges ridiculous ruling, will instead be at your core for the rest of your life. Being a man who can stand on his own two feet is something no one can ever take away from you. And as for past dicriminations, it is a terrible thing, it ruined lives. But to say this exists in this firefighter exam if pure nonsense, and I suspect all you whiners out there know it too. Enough already, this isn't taking a job for the sake of just income, lives depend on you. Raise yourself up to the standard, lowering it to accomodate you is a dangerous decision. If you can't pass the exam you either didn't try hard enough or you need to go and find out your weak points, fix them and test again. Saying your skin color made you fail is trying to manipulate the process to fit your capabilities. If your not capable you have absolutely no business wanting this job, that is if you realize what this job is really all about, which I doubt you do. But with the level of manipulation that is around today, it seems as though in this instance you whiners got your way. Good luck, and if you botch a rescue it will in all probability be blood on your hands. Go tell that story to the family members, and maybe you should take this judge along with you to do the talking for you too.

It's not the fire departments fault if Hispanic and Blacks make up a small percentage. If you want the job you make the effort go after it. I'm of Hispanic decent and this whining is pathetic!!
