Ойын-сауық

Morgan from Richmond, Virginia, took numerous types of dance classes as a child, but she was especially drawn to Irish dancing. Despite being one of the only Black women in her classes, she broke barriers and became one of the top 50 Irish dancers in the world.

The beauty of Irish dancing is that it is accepting of everyone. It is a wonderful community that embraces Irish culture. While not as popular as other forms of dance in the US, it is a true sport. My daughter dances and we absolutely love it! Morgan is an inspiration.

As an Irish dancer I can say I actually have a similar story as Morgan! I did ballet, tap etc and I started when my best friend told me to start doing it with her! 2 years later my teacher is a 3rd world champion and is in riverdance!!

It's not tap though. Tap is young, modern, and urban usually tapping with flat feet. Irish is formal, mostly on toes, restrictive arm movements, and a lot of jumps. Clogging is the descendant of Irish Dance, which is similar but has looser rules.

“Barriers”? Do you mean to say that someone held her back because of her race? I hadn’t been aware that that was the case. On the contrary, I had the impression that she was embraced and nurtured despite her not being Irish or Irish American. Please clarify. If other aspiring Irish dancers who happen to be non-white are having barriers constructed against them, please tell us about that, too.

Kelly stated she’s the “only” but that’s not the case. There were black, Asian, and others in Irish dance even in the 80s when I did it and in the 2000s when my daughter did it. Less common, for sure, but they aren’t a shock to see.

As quite possibly the only South Sudanese/American Irish dancer to have competed at an international level, I would like also like to let you know that the CLRG organization has had at least two black world champions that I know of: one being American, and the other Scottish born to Nigerian parents, who won his title just last year.

I think it's because of the unfair and unfounded cultural appropriation accusations from white supremacists mostly in America who are neither dancers Irish nor appreciative of Irish culture. They're the ones who attempt cultural appropriation of Irish culture to divide black and Irish There are black Irish in America in Ireland and many other places. There are African Irish born in Ireland now and they are fluent Irish speakers and hurlers etc no problem from Irish

Smiley L Youre missing the point. No one said they couldn’t be but since you don’t see them often the ones who might be interested might shy away bc they don’t see themselves. Just like the first person on the moon, (Altho many said it couldn’t be done). We’ve landed machines on the moon why make a big deal that a human stepped foot? Bc it’s something that hasn’t or rarely (in this case) has been done

Wrong! She has always given credit to the "originators" of the Irish dance, unlike some people(e.g. some white rappers, hip hop dancers, jazz/blues musicians) and/or Korean "Pop" groups who don't acknowledge the originators(African American). If acknowledgement is given to the "source" then it is not culture "appropriating" it is culture "appreciating." As a direct result, she was invited by the President of Ireland to participate in the St. Patrick day parade and the world famous River Dance group(Irish) have invited her to perform with them.
