We homeschooled our children. Our children were the only black children in the entire district. We live in a very rural area. Our children were bullied horribly. My husband is a successful attorney, so thankfully we could afford to do so. My youngest started ASU this fall.

I'm sorry your children and surely all of you had to deal with bigotry. It amazes me that there are still so many whites that judge people's worth by skin color. They're becoming a minority themselves. Most people I know reject racism. My family is mixed and there is no undoing that!

It can be done successfully. I did it with three children. I was told one of my children would never get an education pass the sixth grade level. They kept placing them in special education. They were bullied constantly. We moved to better neighborhoods. Sadly, problems progressed. I took all three of my children out of public school. They are now graduated from college and one is graduating from medical school this year.

When I taught in the public school system, I told myself that when I had kids I would put them in private school. And then when I taught in private school, I decided I would home school. These schools are not teaching our children the way they need to be taught. If you can, take control of your children's education.

A lot of my family members called us horrible things. We as a community need to stop calling each other parents/children names etc. When they make decisions for their household. My parents were not going to send us to a horrible school for the sake of "staying black" enough

Just because I wasn't around my parents for a certain amount of hours a day doesn't mean that I am lacking being "traditionally black" . @@economicdevelopmentplannin8715 maybe people have figured out that traditional values don't make them happy. It nice that you are for traditional families. But now people have realized you don't have to just be here to make children etc.. Kids are expensive and a lifetime commitment. Women and men can have fulfilled lives with or without children. For me the whole traditional family is something that is forced on us by society. I grew up in a traditional household and both my parents worked and split the duties. They always taught me to be myself and I dont have to grow up to just be a wife and mother. I can come and go as I please and I dont want to have children because I know how I like to live my life. I can support myself and I'm extremely happy with my career and boyfriend. many people are divored that are in traditional families. They realized they never got to be who they wanted to be because they were taught how this is how it is. Everyone has their own path. Not to mention this world is a dumpster fire. Thus why there is a decline with people having children. The world is over saturated anyway.

I pulled my 9 yr old out for the same reason. He’s smart, like weather science, science, math, geography and coding. He can calculate numbers in his head on a snap of a finger. But. Yes, there’s a but. He wiggles alot. He’s very easily distracted. He’s too smart to qualify for IEP. If I allowed him to stay in public school, they had started labeling “troubled”. I was homeschooled in the 90s. Before that I did go to public school for a short time. Black history was not being taught to us then the way I feel it should be. I knew about it at a very young age because my parents taught it to me. And even when I was homeschooled it was not discussed in our history curriculum at great length. Again, this was something that our parents brought to our attention as something important for us to know and I also took a special interest in. I am saddened and frightened that so much history is disappearing from our schools altogether now. When one discards history they discard education; they are creating more opportunities for racism and ignorance and hate.

Idk what the answer is but I worry about parents who might take advantage of it.

I LOVE seeing the shift in black families towards homeschools. I've taught in various high schools and statistics don't lie. Black students that are homeschooled are 20-40 percent higher academically than black kids in public schools. After teaching in an all-black inner-city school and seeing fights daily between students or the "smart" and hard-working kids being made fun of...it just is not a conducive place to learn. Every child has great potential and small group or one-on-one instruction can help meet the needs of every child. I wish every child was able to have that opportunity.

Those aren't the only reasons, just some of the well-known ones. One of my biggest reasons for homeschooling is how disabled and neurodivergent students are fundamentally disadvantaged by the structure of formal schooling. That's not really fixable at a root level even if the school system does its best. I would compare it to how policing as an institution has deep-rooted, systemic inequality.

We are now homeschooling our children. It's not easy, but it's definitely worth it! We moved to the number one school district in Louisiana just to experience issues when sending our children to school. As a black mother of five, this video gave me so much inspiration.

We're a black family homeschooling our 5 as well, up here in Michigan. There is a LOT of help out there, both in person and online. Your best asset? The local library. Not just for books and resources, but also for classes, activities, and community involvement. 👍

What?! I knew America is like the worst place on earth but for police to haul away a little 1st grader because of sunglasses? Seems to me they should have hauled away that no good rotten assistant principal. That poor little girl will be traumatised for life. From all I've seen about American schools, I think that all parents who care about their children should pull them out and the majority of those rotten schools should shut down for good.

Raised in Montgomery AL in some of the worse schools. Being one of 5 Hispanics in a all black school I suffered some of the worst bullying ever imaginable. All because of my white skin… it made me hate myself. Glad I moved the hell out of that state. Teach your kids to love all races regardless of color.

As one of the few black families in our district I chose not to enroll my sun and to remove my oldest. One of the downsides is the further lack of diversity in the homeschool co-ops. I drive an hour to a more populated city for meetups once or twice a month.

I was able to watch the generation before me homeschool my cousins. 4 Girls all excelling in life. I remember thinking they would be weird or sheltered, it is the polar opposite. Then my best friends wife started a hybrid school....3 days at home and 2 at school. My wife and I tried it for one year with our eldest who is now 7 and loved it. Both of our kids are homeschooled now and enjoy the experience. In general, my mind has changed, if you are responsible for every area of your child's life until adulthood, why would we leave education to the state? Moreover for black families, with all of the struggles we experience from violence, negative stereotypes and racism, I feel safer with my kids at home with us. We are responsible for what they are learning and can be creative with how they learn it. We are not relying on the word of a teacher with 40 other students in the class. We don't worry about what negative influences other students may have on our kids. We select the families we bond with and our kids love their friends. I will be an advocate for homeschooling in our communities. Is it challenging, sometimes. But we have these years with our children for a short period of time. I enjoy being with them so much and we have fun as a family. Knowing they will be fully prepared for adulthood is an added bonus.

I have definitely considered homeschooling myself. I am not decided. Personally I did not have any safe place. School was not a safe place. Home was not a safe place. I left an abusive home to go to abusive peers and teachers. There wasn't a safe place for me. As someone who endured no safe place, I can understand where people are concerned about bullying in school and abuse at home. My question to you is what's the solution to the children that get it at both ends?

Really good coverage 👍 of so many salient points in a world gone mad with so many rules about 'not having so many rules'! So good! Like the lady says, it's about what's right for YOUR household. I'm In Melbourne Australia, my kids have grown up and make their own mistakes now. 😉 I can tell you I was raised to consider ALL to be equal, but good people are having to fight to keep their kids alive for goodness sake! It's nuts! I would like very much for all and sundry to look and see the good and righteous these decent folk are injecting back into their kids and by extension, our world. I've never had issue being white, but it's EMBARRASSING these days 😒

Homeschool is great...if you can do it. Most of these parents are middle and high income earning families and have the capital, culture and material, to do so. Low earning families in low wealth communities makes homeschooling difficult.
