Black Hills of Dakota from Calamity Jane (1953)

Ойын-сауық

The town heads out to the Ft. Scully Annual Ball, with Calamity Jane (Doris Day) and Wild Bill (Howard Keel) seated prominently in the head carriage and Lt. Danny Gilmartin (Philip Carey) and Katie (Allyn Ann McLerie) behind them.
Wild Bill and Danny had previously drawn straws to see who would get to escort Katie; Wild Bill, as the loser, has now been forced to spend the evening with Calamity. Bitterly, in his typical cutting fashion, he critiques Calamity's attire (what he can see of it) and she puts him in his place with a slow explanation (like one would give to a child). Then, in a rare moment of agreement, they sing their pride and love for their homeland, accompanied by the rest of the cast.

(An aside: When I watch this video, I always want to poke Danny in the eye and wipe that smug, arrogant smile off his face!)
Lyrics:
[Wild Bill:]
Take me back to the black hills,
The black hills of Dakota.
To the beautiful Indian country that I love.
[Calamity:]
Lost my heart in the black hills,
The black hills of Dakota,
Where the pines are so high that they kiss the skies above.
[Calamity, Wild Bill, Katie, and Danny:]
And when I get that lonesome feeling,
And I'm miles away from home,
I hear the voice of the mystic mountains calling me back home.
[Calamity and Wild Bill:]
So take me back to the black hills,
The black hills of Dakota.
To the beautiful Indian country that I love.
[Chorus:]
Take me back to the black hills,
the black hills of Dakota.
To the beautiful Indian country that I love.
[Bill:]
Lost my heart in the black hills
[Calamity and Wild Bill:]
The black hills of Dakota,
Where the pines are so high, that they kiss the sky above.
And when I get that lonesome feeling,
And I'm miles away from home,
I hear the voice of the mystic mountains callin' me back home.
[All:]
So take me back to the black hills,
The black hills of Dakota.
To the beautiful Indian country that I love.
[Calamity and Wild Bill:]
To the beautiful Indian country that I love.

They seem to remake films these days (which makes me feel old, pushing 40), most cases the originals are better then the remakes. Like The Lion King, the remake was good, but it didn't give off that feeling of humph, highly disappointed in it, the lion king was my childhood film, still is.

I’m 76! My grandfather was born in Lead City SD. Around the time of his birth, his father suffered a compound fracture of his leg in a rock fall in the Homestake Mine. Gangrene set in and my great grandfather died. My great grandmother never registered her new son but packed up the whole family and returned to Cumberland, England, My grandfather loved this song, even though he had no recollection of The Black Hills.

In singing about their love of the Dakotas, we can see that they really love each other and enjoy each others company- not yet as lovers, but just wait. 2:08 is a lovely moment when they begin to sing in harmony.

I’m half native (mother), half Scots (father). And closest I ever came to Black Hills was two years in Omaha, NE. But the song is whimsical. Encompassing my homesickness for New England or Alaska. And how content I was…when home.

Along with this film, the classic John Wayne films along with classical music of Frank Sinatra...I owe him so much! And this year he turns 85 so I think singing this or my way for him as he walks in to his surprise birthday party will be a good touch

Mom and Dad used to take me to the cinemas to see Doris when I was 4 or 5 y... now Im 60 and Doris still lives in my heart and my family heart,. Calammity Jane is one of THE MOST classical musical films ever made in HOLLYWOOD: The songs, Doris, cinematography, clothes, acting... all. Takes us to an other dimmention and time, ranges far and away from my country at the same time, a place equal to my culture: good christianity, family values and love... awesome isnt it? The power of movies..... Im not american, I live in Rio and Doris is incredible popular, as an actor and singer, even today to my generation here in Brazil, and special, to my dad , today 99. Proud for having Doris deep in my heart, see her films once in while with him, which brings us joy and peace; and, above all, having America who gave us all of this values, Doris her films , liberty and freedom; America, here, near of us, Thanks America, Thanks Doris, Love you for ever.

This song reminds me of my late grandmother. She loved Doris Day and was always singing this song. Even near the end of her life when her memory had gone, she still used to hum the tune. It’s funny how a song can just bring up such vivid memories about a person.
