I kid you not, one of the pilots flying for Blackwater landed his bird in the middle of a firefight, then walked over to a casualty he heard called out in the radio. He wanted to see if that was a guy he served with when he was in. It was… He got back in, somehow took off, and orbited overhead providing ISR to the ground element until FP arrived. Maybe there always IS that one guy 🤷🏼‍♂️😅😳

When they made A Bridge Too Far, Anthony Hopkins couldn't stop himself from flinching at the pyrotechnics used meaning his character of John Frost is seen running from cover to cover to avoid sporadic enemy fire. The real John Frost criticised this; saying no British officer would run like that. They always walked, showing a 'gentlemanly disdain' for danger. This was very true; it got a lot of officers killed for acting like their Napoleonic era ancestors who could actually walk due to how inaccurate muskets were. These days no veteran would be stupid enough to walk around like that. It's only in movies.

It actually works the opposite way. The IR flasher is used to mark where friendlies are, not where the bad guys are. They would put a couple of those on top of the building they are hiding in, and the gunships will wipe out everything else around them.

Exactly. Throwing it at hostiles could be dangerous because they could mistake it for a grenade and throw it back leading to potential friendly fire.

@@brycepatties And the need to show just how vital the little birds were in this fight. From what I have read of the battle, virtually everyone has stated that the Little Bird helicopters were the reasons why the Rangers and Delta guys survived that night.

I got out of the Army in June of '93. My old unit deployed to Somalia in August. They went in to help rescue those Ranger and Delta troops when they called for all available troops to assist. Two of my buddies were wounded and several of our Humvees were damaged beyond repair in that battle.. Every time I see this movie, I shudder to think that I would have been there, had I re enlisted.

Best war movie ever made .

Ridley Scott and his brilliance in shooting wide angle sequences is remarkable. The detailing in those shots in every frame is a lesson for all young filmmakers.

The little birds saved the day. Rangers would have been overwhelmed that nights

I got to serve with JSOC during my first deployment to Iraq, and I'll tell you now these Gentleman really are elite man, served with part of the 75th Ranger Regiments that came through, the operating at night only sometimes by Stryker, at time by choppers. I can't believe I got to dawn the combat patch for them, like I can't put into words how great it was.

That's awesome man, glad you made it back! Were you with 75th Rangers when deployed, or did you luck out & get strapped to them once out the gate? (I deployed to Afghanistan twice, and we had some JTF-2 snipers helping us during Operation Medusa in 2006. Absolute gentlemen, funny, witty, polite, but absolute savages when it came time to put the capes on)

@@dionjaywoollaston1349 The whole point of a grenade is that it doesn't explode immediately, it explodes after a couple of seconds. Also in combat, any handheld thing being chucked across the battlefield has a high chance of being a grenade. They really should've thrown it away or GTFO there.

AH-6 High speed, low tech. Gotta love em.

actually, mcknight was trying to inspire the others by showing a pointed lack of concern for the fire all around. this is something many commanders do. during the filming of a bridge to far, the real col. frost told anthony hopkins, playing him in the movie, not to run fast in the battle scenes for the same reason. hopkins thought it was a dumb thing to do when being shot at, but complied.

MALBATT Misi Bakara is sequel for this film, based on true story in Somalia 1991 about Black Hawk Down.

Strafing the skinnies is so sweet!

Saw this live in the theater, half the guys in there almost came in their pants when those helos took out the skinnies on the roof with their miniguns.

Sure people probably couldn't hear anything for about a day or two after seeing it in the theater must've been loud as fuck.

they got the use of the ir marker backwards. in a case like this, you mark your position and tell the air support to hit everywhere else.

Well, imagine you are wielding a task force which the Jedi master, Elf Prince, Bane/Venom, Mister Fantastic, the king slayer and Mr.Dunphy served in, and you still lost two choppers and 18 soldiers. This is just unacceptable.

What did they die for? The targets they captured were released about a month later scott free and then the UN packed it up and left Somalia. And please don't say they died to save starving people because the famine had ended before Task Force Ranger was even deployed in August 1993.

They were not thinking of foreign policy or diplomatic relations, they were trying to save each other. Its tragic and a perfect example of why you cant have your cake and eat it too when it comes to foreign intervention.

I always wonder how it would’ve went if they did have an AC-130 Spectre for air support instead of the choppers. The choppers still did a really good job when it helped them clear the way.

Let’s not forget the Malaysian soldiers who saved the US troops in the real Black Hawk Down. 👍

when you read the book its a lot more harrowing. Eversmann didnt simply throw the infrared beacon onto their position. he had to get it as close as possible, and then weigh it down heavily under any debris he could scrabble for. he had to careful kneel down and lift a heavy chunk of concrete and tuck it under, all the while under fire, so that the rotors of the helicopters wouldn't simply blow it away.

It should be law that every soldier wears a bullet proof vest as part of official uniform, just like helmet,the torso is the biggest target and most susceptible to harm or injury.

Delta leader, finscher, from perfect storm. Ramped it up.

Fairly Realistic as far as War movies go. I will say the gun fight in Lone Survivor is probably the most realistic I’ve seen, as unless you shoot someone in the head or heart they will not die right away. And when the volume of fire increases it can get pretty confusing. Lone Survivor captured that pretty well. The Insurgents we fought in Fallujah were so hopped up on meth that I literally remember shooting a couple a have a dozen or more times and they’d still be up running around and firing, Ak’s PKM’s and RPG’s at us.

This was filmed in Morrocco, and the helicopters were provided by the 160th SOAR (for a fee to the Army), and it took actual DIPLOMACY to let them fly there, there questions about exactly what they were doing, and assurances had to given that they were NOT there to fly missions ANYWHERE!

@@steveo5611 The Night-stalkers were just getting stood up for that job when they lost the helos. That was their FIRST deployment, if you had tried those guys on a couple of years after that..... I do know what I read about the night stalker aircraft in Morocco, they did NOT like that, but with a little arm twisting from DOD and some FUNDS from the movie makers, they got over it.

Colin Powell refused to support a request for armor and a ac130 gunship. Yet he never was blamed for it.

There was a lot of discussion in the book about how the raid would have went if an AC-130 and/or proper armoured vehicles(think more Stryker than Humvee) were involved. I'd say that the Apaches(or Cobras; the Marines were conducting relief operations in the area) would have been a better choice than the AC-130 due to the terrain, and easier assets to obtain given the SOAR presence.

@@maricelramos2514 No. The United States had a heavy presense in Somolia and when Clinton pulled out the military he realized the situation was not yet handled. He sent in a minimal amount of troops (a single Ranger battalion without any backup) to keep their signature small because he didn't want to admin his mistake. The White House would not authorize AC-130's to operate in the Somolian theater during the peacekeeping raids in the 1990s. Not because they were worried about blue on blue kills.

In terms of the military, this operation was tragic in preparation and reconnaissance, and it was carried out in an exemplary manner with regard to the evacuation of the encircled troops. Unfortunately, politics then got involved and the US went into isolation for a long time.

I forgot what the flaw in this operation was, but I think it was because they didn't bring any Heavy Armour support like Main Battle Tanks or APC vehicles to begin with which is why the operation ended in failure and they all had to pull out.

The problems started when the US bombed an apartment building full of Somalians holding a peace committee.

Although it is a movie, in reality there were true events. That's what happened in all the wars. Sad how people die for the interests of greedy mental patients.

Good movie, war with Tom Sizemore the warmovie specialist.

Movies like BHD and Saving Private Ryan are classics. They show the Murica fck yeah moments but also a lot of the main guys getting taken out and dying as it is in real warfare. It feels tense, like you're there witnessing the battle. Not like Rambo or The Expendables or something.

Let me tell you a true story: Between January-May 2003 I spent my time at Ft. Benning Georgia for Infantry training. I spent 13 months in Fallusah but thats not the point. The guy in this movie who gets injured and begs to go back out was present at the time of my training . The drill sergeants said one thing to us: "Dont make eye contact with him or even glance in his direction. You fuckers aren't worthy of the ground he walks on". It was a moment in my life ill never forget. Seeing that man from a distance was more of a privilege than meeting any celebrity.
