    Great advice on machine buying. People write me all the time and ask, "What tools do you reccomend for someone getting into woodworking?" My answer is always buy the tools you need for your next job and not before. Great build and it's so nice to be getting twice as much content out of you guys on this channel. Yeah, and about the used tools. The only major tool in my shop that I bought new was my Sawstop. The used market was scarce and anything I did find was not a low enough price to justify buying used. Almost all of my other tools are from Craigslist.

    Sweet looking table, my man! You are now on a slippery slope with the lathe...You'll be turning everything for awhile...it's addicting. When you are sanding a cylinder like the legs try slapping some sandpaper on some scrap 3/4" ply to use as a sanding block. It helps me a lot to keep the diameter more consistent that hand sanding. Although yours looked pretty money so maybe that's not necessary :-)

    One of the best parts about moving more into making videos about making furniture rather than just making custom furniture, is that there is so much more room to experiment. Can't wait to try all sorts of new things on the lathe. And yeah, I bought my SawStop off of a guy that was moving and downsizing. He had the saw for about a year and used it for about 2 months, so I got pretty lucky.

    Another stellar performance. Question... When routing your curved edges of the table top, why wouldn’t you just rout all the way through instead of using a jig saw to finish the cut? Seems like an extra unnecessary step from my point of view, but that’s because I really don’t know much of building furniture. Thanks fellas. I really appreciate seeing all the content you release and look forward to seeing it each week, especially the Modern Maker Podcast. 🤙🏼✌🏻

  • @shaunb66

    @shaunb66

    Thanks Joshua! Really appreciate it. The idea with not using the router to cut all the way through is just a time thing. I can make a couple passes with the router to get part way through, which maybe takes 5 minutes. Then I can finish the cut with my jigsaw which takes about 30 seconds. Not really a big deal, but when doing this stuff all day, every day, you find the shortcuts wherever you can.

    I had this same question as well. I was also confused because in the video that he showed right after using the jigsaw, the bearing on the flush trim bit is on the bottom and it isn’t riding against anything. I don’t know how to make furniture either but this confused me. I figured that he would need to make multiple passes because he’s only using a medium sized router (looks like my Bosch 1617).

    What is with the gaps between the ends of the leg blanks when they are glued up? Is it because they are only jointed on one side? If so, I would have thought this would mean that the middle blanks are not actually being properly clamped at the ends, or am I missing something?

  • @shaunb66

    @shaunb66

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, so the parts where there are gaps is where there isn't any glue between the separate legs. I only jointed the glue surfaces because I knew I would be turning them later. As far as not being properly clamped, there is still plenty of clamping pressure along the entire length of each leg, though I did do a lot of checking to make sure it was fine.

    Great Job, Shaun! Question: Once you sprayed on the 4 coats of GF Satin Black Poly, were there any spots where the oak fibers could be seen or did you get 100% black coverage? Asking as I think this would be much easier than ebonizing and inking like I've done before.

  • @shaunb66

    @shaunb66

    4 жыл бұрын

    Thanks David! After 4 coats there is definitely 100% coverage. It gets down into the grain, but is thin enough where the grain still shows through. And it is so much easier than using ink then spraying clear over it.

    Because of the really obvious grain, red oak has a tendency to go all Builder Basic Cabinetry when you do a light finish. The dark stain and the grain really work together. It doesn't come through on the video.

    Yeah, it isn't really a paint, so the grain shows through really well. It was a client decision, but I really think it is a cool look, especially in person. Thanks for watching!

    Hey, I wasn’t being critical and I’m sorry if it came across that way. I’ve been an interior designer for almost 40 years and I’ve seen all the finishing options come and go. Solid timber isn’t as big a thing here in Australia as it appears to be over there. Here it’s mostly veneer over MDF. I love the stuff Shaun and Chris do and totally get that the finish is almost always the clients choice. Thanks for sharing Shaun. And thanks for all the entertainment and education throughout the year. F

  • @shaunb66

    @shaunb66

    4 жыл бұрын

    I did think about doing a dovetail, but getting the shoulder on the tail side to match the curve of the leg was going to be too time consuming, so I went with this. and I think you would probably have to do a number on that joint to break it, the wood will probably fail before the glue does.
