Black Dyke Band: Journey Into Freedom | Eric Ball
Музыка
#blackdykeband #journeyintofreedom #ericball The Black Dyke Band (conducted by Nicholas Childs) perform "Journey Into Freedom" by Eric Ball. October 11, 2003 - Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham. www.blackdykeband.co.uk/
Composed to be used as the Championship test piece for bands competing at the Royal Albert Hall in 1967, Eric Ball’s Journey Into Freedom is one of his most popular works. The work has endured the test of time, being used twice more for contests, as well as being a Championship band staple.
Journey Into Freedom has strong links to the time it was composed as Ball had very strong ideas to what he wants both the listeners and players to realise:
“Whether they know it or not, today’s competing amateur musicians - and the tens of thousands more they represent - are helping to keep open the ‘Windows of Heaven’ in this harsh materialsitic age. Focus on some unexpressed longings of the human heart. In the realms of the spirit, mankind’s greatest victories can be won. May today’s brass band festival give us all hope and inspiration for these troubled times, as well as entertainment and happiness.”
By the time Britain had reached the late 1960s, people had seen the Cold War escalate which in turn affected the traditional values by disaffected youth. Journey Into Freedom was Ball’s way of seeking reaffirmation of his belief that love and spiritual fulfillment through God could still be achieved, even against such a depressing and violent background. It was every person for themselves at this time, with Ball’s music reflecting some of these emotions.

This is best I have ever heard this piece played.
John Doyle.... What an brilliant flugal horn 📯 player...... 👍
Holy cow that gal on Soprano really lights the concert hall up in a super exciting way. Bravo!!!
I had the privilege of attending the 1967 finals when Journey in Freedom was the test piece and won by Black Dyke. One of the best brass band test pieces ever, in my view
The slow theme must be one of the most beautiful ever written for Brass Band, so emotional
Never tire of hearing this great Eric Ball composition. Very well played by Black Dyke.
The brilliance of Eric Ball is astounding. How can any composer paint a picture of a strugle for freedom so brilliantly that even non musical people would instantly know what it was depicting and at the same time make it so exciting.
In the orchestral world you have Mozart, Bach, Tchaikovsky, Mahler etc. I will not name all of the BB equivalents of but Eric Ball is there. I can listen to this performance of this classic over and over again.
Journey Into Freedom. The Salvation Army’s gift to secular Brass Bands. Thankyou. 👆
Eric Ball - a man far ahead of his time. Absolutely brilliant piece, brilliantly played.
i was with my dad at Albert Hall 1967 age 15 listening to this I am now trying to play this for the NZ b grade test now age 71 what a privilege to try😮 l
I can't believe that this brilliant item of brass band music was written in 1967! I was a lad of 16 then. Well done to Black Dyke and brilliant soloists on a magnificent performance of a technically demanding piece of music by a celebrated composer.
Soul inspiring music. Can you imagine the depth of thinking of Eric Ball. I had the honour of playing under his leadership once, and meeting him a few times when I was on the train in London going to work. A Giant in music !!!!!!!!
Schitterende uitvoering, naar mijn mening de mooiste vertolking tot nu toe die ik heb gehoord van Journey. Briljante compositie van Eric Ball.
Some wonderful color to this band from days gone by. Particularly impressed by the Soprano cornet playing within the ensemble. Oh how I long for that to return.

Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
Great precision for a pretty big group.
Beautiful
Benjamin Rapp fulfilling the role of Principle Cornet in this concert in the absence of Roger Webster who'd had an unfortunate accident the day before when he got his cornet caught in the top of his staircase bannister and found himself unconscious at the bottom of the stairs. Happily he recovered from the accident very quickly.

Just fantastic.....
I remember playing this on tenor horn at the West of England area competition in Colston Hall Bristol.
Beautiful sound...
Heard Cory Band play this at the Albert Hall many years ago. Gave me goosebumps: . Fabulous piece of music .

and of course all the talk was of the missing Roger Webster, who earlier that day had decided to fly unfortunately for him not by Concorde, but by hooking his gig bag around the top of the stairs. His resultant injuries meant he couldn't take part in the proceedings, but a reshuffle from the MD saw Ben Rapp take over on Principal Cornet to impressive effect,

No comparison between those two bands , Dyke were superb and made the ISB sound like a very low section band ........

Tom you are right but it is an unfair comparison to make considering the pool of resources Black Dyke can recruit from to that of the ISB who despite this are still a very fine band.
