Black & Decker KC9042 Powered screwdriver

Got this at a car boot sale for 50 cent a few weeks ago. Only bought it as John had an identical one in his TV shop for years.

My Dad had the higher end model of this with the lock. His came with a wall mounted charger, his lasted a good ten years before the batteries died. He replaced the cells and got another five years before the motor died. These are solid screw drivers for what they are.

This was the screwdriver we used for EVERYTHING as a child. Charger was mounted on the wall!

I have one. You can cheat and charge it by using a drill to run the motor as a generator. Just make sure you get the direction correct.

The wall charger had 3 volt ac so the diode allowed you to put the screwdriver on the charger in either direction. Great screw driver for the time .

Is this it? Is this the one? Is this the screwdriver video we're always talking about? Have I found the holy grail of OjNoj? Could all these questions, and more, be answered in one reply? Let's see! 🤷😆🤣😁😂😅🐒🦆💨⚠️

Hi . I liked your video. I bought one of these recently, new old stock . But the batteries won't hold a charge . Did you eventually replace the batteries on this tool and where you able to get the replacement batteries easy enough in Dublin . I would greatly appreciate any information you could give me . Thanks

That's a nice screwdriver, i don't know if you sprayed the commutators with switch cleaner, better contact gives more current and more torque :-) If you want a simpler charger, a 7805 reg and resistor is an easy constant current circuit :-D I hope you stay well with this nasty virus invading our countrys. Loverly ammeter, very visual and classic.

@@IrishvintageTVRadioMotor does not have much copper so don't expect miracles. My similar 2.4kV Skil model overloads at about 4A and stalls. Still, it works very well for its intended purpose - screw removal, very handy indeed! My larger 3.6V model can countersink 2" drywall screws in a pinch.

Did it work ok for you after a good charge or did you end up changing those cells? I like your ex ministry of defence ammeter, nice quality movements in those.

I tryed those type of screwdrivers and found them to be too slow and a real pain in the ass. I ended up buying a 18 volt battery drill with a screw driver bit ( 2 point and 6 " long ). The first one was a cheap and nasty chinese one ( ozito ) this lasted over 10 years and with all the abuse that that poor drill was made to do, i was supprised that it lasted so long. I rebuilt the battery pack a couple of times. That drill was finally retired and was replaced by a Ryoby drill that only lasted 6 months as the forward/reverse switch failed. This was not repaired and returned to the point of sale. I ended up with a Makita 18 volt battery drill with a two speed gearbox and clutch and two batteries. That has lasted over 14 years now and still with the original batteries that came with the drill. High speed and the cluch set to the 2nd or 3rd lowest setting and it was amazing as the time saved. I used those battery drills for dismantling all sorts of electronic equipment. As i mainly repaired tv's ( crt and plazma or lcd ) and the many things that came across my bench. Audio was another area that the battery dril came into it's own. I have now been retired for 10 years now, but my drill has not.
