Black+Decker Flex vacuum upgrade review

Should you buy the new model?!? Tough decision.

Hmm... I bought the 'newer' model about 5 years ago here in NZ, it has 2014 stamped on it. It's an 18V Lithium. It did come with a crevice tool and a dusting brush (although it's useless, the bristles wore out and bent in the first year - I use a dusting brush from another vacuum). It also came with a charging base which has the round holders for those tools, but they're not very stable so I normally lie them flat next to the thing anyway. They must have skipped that for the US market? I actually prefer your design where you can plug the charge cable directly into the unit. I'm sure you figured it out by now but I always just release the hose and set it aside when getting into the filter area, it's much easier without the hose stretching and pulling and you can see the slots in the plastic where it needs to go. Thanks for the comparison.

18 months ago I bought the B&D 20v Li "Flex" model. It's pretty good--except that the crappy battery lasted about a year of little use before it went to dying after 30 seconds.

Happened to me, too. I charged it with a B&D cordless jigsaw charger… and it works just fine. It's a little more powerful than the flex charger… but that seemed to be what it needed? Your battery isn't getting enough voltage to fill it with the energy it needs… maybe? Idk how that stuff works… but a 15v charger did the trick for me.

I don't think that the problem is that they aren't lasting long enough (the battery)… as much as the problem is… they aren't getting enough charge? Here's why… Mine (the older light grey, grey & gold) wasn't holding a charge well. It'd die within 30 sec. I have a cordless jigsaw that had a 24v DC charger… and thinking I'm screwed enough with a dead cordless vacuum… let's try to screw me some more… so I plugged it in! It WORKED! Lit up blue, so I waited a few min. only because I didn't want to burn it up with excessive voltage over a long period of time. About a min. & a half later & tried it out. It stayed on longer than when I plugged it up for half a day! Check it out, if you have a 24v charger laying around… but under supervision. I'm telling you what I did. Not responsible for you, of course.

Nice! A vacuum defibrillator! 2yrs later my new vacuum quit charging. Turns out the charging cord got a short. Bought a replacement on Amazon.

I used a 24v charger from a B&D jigsaw (I don't think the brand would necessarily matter?), and it went from barely holding a charge… or dying within 20 sec… to living for quite some time. Over 5 min… I'm thinking?

I rather do a hack and upgrade the battery to the new ones.

Try a 24v charger. It worked for me. Under supervision, though! I charged mine the very first time with it for maybe a min & a half… it stayed on for about 4 times longer than with the 15v charger if I left it half a day? Just keep an eye on it… or just try it for 2-5 minutes… see where you're at & guage it from then on? Mine worked out just fine… SO FAR! This is what "I" did. Hopefully if you check it out… it'll do the same for you?

Not sure, but it's a slow charge, probably at least six hours, maybe 12.

At 4:10 kzread.info/dash/bejne/pYOLr6-Sk6y4nag.html the video shows how to remove the filter to clean it. OMG this guy should work for B&D as a user experience engineer and get this thing redesigned. I really like this unique vacuum but considering you're spending well over $100, i'm expecting a little more. This was the only video I could find on youtube on how to change the filter, probably cause no one can figure out how to do it!
