I have a Brown Leghorn roo named Yondu that is a great guardian of my free range mixed flock and very attentive to his girls. The only problem is that he absolutely hates my guts. He doesn't like that his ladies come running to me for treats or that I invade his house to collect eggs and clean/maintain. He has spurred me several times and drawn blood on a few occasions. He is relentless, despite many attitude adjustments that I have imposed. To some it would seem necessary to send him down the road, so to speak, but I have a certain amount of respect for the warrior mentality he exhibits. He acts like a little sweetheart to my wife which demonstrates his intelligence due to the fact that she loves him and wouldn't let me get rid of him if I wanted to. I also breed a separate flock of Salmon Faverolles. Faverolles roosters are probably the most docile roos I have ever had. My big boy Napoleon will chill out on my lap, even with the girls nearby, but as far as a guardian, he's more of a lover than a fighter. They make great pets, but will often run away from danger rather than put himself between a predator and his hens.

What are you feeding the chickens if I may ask? I've tried Dumor crumbs but very often I find big clamps of blue mold in those bags. Whole corn they don't eat.

I hate a mean rooster. I just don’t tolerate it. But I have kids and I don’t want them to be afraid of them. Maybe I have just been very lucky but I have had several Black copper Roosters and none have been aggressive. I don’t try and pet my roosters and I give them space. But I am talking about you walk in the pen and they try and square up on you. Yeah those leave the homestead.

Ameraucana/Auracana...sorry about your Wellie, when i bought some from Amish the rooster was VERY chill. He didnt even crow very much. He just hung out with his Wellie ladies. they were in with Sumatra and Easter Eggers. The Sumatra roos were also very relaxed around humans. I never worried about my birds with the grandkids. Ive had Sumatra/Cubalaya/Phoenix/Welsummers and Easter Eggers, all good with people.

I have a mix breed rooster he's quite gentle as a rooster he always was like that he does tolerate being held but is stand off ish like he's supposed to. I started spending more time with him cause after needing some shots for 5 days straight he started biting but spending time with him has settled him down he just needs reassurance I'm not going to give him shot's any more. Being able to handle a chicken is important to me for cases like mine had for medical reasons.

McCoy is our Black Copper Maran rooster, he was so sweet when he was little, but now he's pumped up on testosterone and attacks anything that he feels threatened by. He is a great protector, but breeds all the hens rather aggressively. We hatched 18 eggs that he fertilized and now I'm thinking it's about time he goes... We do have an Americana rooster that was recently given to us as a replacement, but I'm not too interested in catching the Maran.

It must be the line more so then the breed. Cause we have hatched several of his kids and they all very docile.

Hello. Im curious about what kind of fertility issues your rooster had. You said he was gonna be your main pick but had some issues regarding fertility. im having an issue with my one Maran rooster. He seems to have a problem mating with some off the hens. Just a few days ago i read that some roosters have really fluffy butts and they cant actually make contact. I trimmed his vent area and im pretty sure he is making contact with them now. Im hoping thats the reason because he is an awesome looking copper maran.

I never did get any fertile eggs from that rooster. It was probably for the best because one day he just died out of the blue. No signs of fowl play. I have heard that about the feathers.

Our black copper maran is new to the yard and is a bit older than our current flock. Immediately the testosterone started building up around the homestead. He tries to mate with our bantam hens we think. He grabs them behind the neck with his beak but nothing else. Just keeps them in his mouth like a chew toy. And our drakes even started showing signs of being territorial. The maran was sweet as all get out at first, loved to be held and almost seemed to laugh when we pet him. But now he tries to size us up. And he broke skin on me and bit my son and wife. I let him go because I as well try to not get involved in a higher archly, that was until he bit my boy so I held him down and gradually let him back up. He starts to come at us still but stops at the last second so he seemed to have learned to some degree. We also have a black sexlink /rhode island red and he is a lap rooster. Loves to be petted. And we have a mottled houdan rooster. Doesn’t like to be handled but is very friendly. I personally didn’t like the fact my wife brought this new rooster home. It messed up the whole ecosystem and now the maran sleeps on the floor of the coup. He isn’t allowed on the roosting bars according to our other roosters. I fear that this beautiful bird will turn mean as he seems to not be accepted. You think we should just keep him separate from the others. And will that cause him to become “depressed” since they are social birds. Any thoughts? Maybe we can get him some hens and just put them in a separate coup? Idk I’d hate to have to turn him into a broiler.

One thing for sure. I don’t put up with Roosters that attack my kids. If it happens once it will happen again. In my experience anyways. It may take some time but one day your back will be to him and bam he all over you lol. Right now I am a horrible example but I would not have but one rooster unless I was trying to breed different breeds. And then they would need to be separated so each rooster would have his own hens. If the roosters grow up together there is not nearly the competition but when one just gets dropped in the mix it can last for a while. I still have one rooster that no one likes and they all fight with him. But the ones that grew up from a chick don’t seem to fight with the top rooster. So I guess my suggestion would be if you want to keep him and you can I would separate him and maybe give him a girl or 2 to keep him company.

  • @HolloHomestead

So if you breed a black copper rooster to a Easter egger or a cream legg bar. Basically any blue egg layer you will get an Oliver egger. If you breed them to some of the light brown slash pink looking eggs you will get like terra-cotta colored eggs. It varies based on how dark of an egg gene he has.

If he’s young I would say it’s just a matter of time. That being said Quattro my last Black copper rooster never attacked but he also was not super friendly at times. He wouldn’t eat out your hand most of the time. He seemed to be on guard. So I gave him his space and didn’t try and provoke him. In my mind that is what he was for. Attack a threat but be on guard always.
