Oh, believe me; it happens a lot during practice! If you aim to get really good at this kind of stuff, two things are guaranteed while you train: 1) You will drop the stick a lot, and 2) you will thwack yourself with the stick a lot. To get to the level where she's at, this young lady has definitely accumulated an impressive selection of bruises, and has probably broken at least a few practice bo staffs!

This is a competition form. Contemporary weapons have their own divisions and traditional weapons have theirs. You can't compare and say heavier bo staff are real... Anything can be used as a weapon if you know how to use them. Just enjoy the performance or try to do what she just did. Then we'll talk some more.

I am a black belt who does creative weapons, and I feel her nerves, even though I'm not doing it, it's stressful and intense, you always have this doubt in you that you might drop it, but when you start doing it, all the adrenaline kicks up and you have no time to think about what gonna happen, but time to make it happen the way you want it, and in the end, when you finish it and it turns out the way you want it, it is the most pleasant, (and tiring,) feeling you'll ever have. Success.

Guys, this is XMA. XMA is all tricks an and flashy techniques. If this were a traditional weapon form, then you would've seen timed strikes used for power and for fighting an opponent. Traditional forms are the fighting. XMA is gymnastics and martial arts so that it looks cool.

haha people in the comments saying this wont help you in a fight. let me put you straight back in your place don't be jealous cause you can do these things this is the most elite level with a bo if you can do this with a bow you can do all and maneuver fast and harder than someone who can't do this of course you wouldn't use the flashy show stuff but you wouldn't even know what hit you.

I admire the work and imagination that went into this display and there is clearly a lot of skill in the stances and positional use of the Bo. My only reservation is that it's not a Bo but a carbon pole, which is significantly lighter and without the inertia of the same. That makes all the difference is using it as a Weapon; which is surely its true function. Very good for all that. Well done to the young lady.

I teach a strictly combat style with no emphasis on sports yet I must say I am impressed with the skills needed to execute such a performance, practicality aside. Yes I agree it has nothing to do with practical martial arts, yet I can't help but think how effective the young lady might be if she brought her physical abilities to combat. It is my sincere hope that her instructor is doing just that in her training, and that the more practical traditional skills that were developed in the field under combat and self defense conditions are being imparted as well. It is sometimes hard to find the time to combine this type of physical training and practical combat, yet it is ever the concerned instructors job to do so if their art is legitimate, or if only for sport to inform their students of this up front.
