Flexibility is also important for injury prevention. Athletes should still stretch and work on mobility while they use techniques like this video to learn their BJJ game in the meantime. Definitely a supplement vs a replacement.

Flexibility makes a huge difference in preventing injuries and helps a lot with other open guards. My teachers, Renzo Gracie isn't flexible and Rodrigo Gracie isn't flexible at all. Matt Serra is super flexible, so is Royce, Rickson, and Royler. So is flexibility important? Yes. Do you need it? No. Does it help? Yes. ;) I don't have good flexibility but I have great Jiujitsu. Do I wish I had better flexibility? Yes. That would of helped prevent a ton of injuries. Eddie Bravo makes his students stretch a lot.

Is flexibility a prerequisite to advancing in the 10th Planet system? Or can you get good in the system and just avoid rubber guard? I know that the system has expanded quite a bit since it first became popular.

But lets not forget that becoming flexible over time is an option and why the fuck not just do that? lol

Great point that becoming flexible over time is the best bet IMHO. But in the meantime, these strategies can help you compete until you make those mobility improvements.

You can be a blackbelt that is very unsuccessful at the black belt level (competing against other black belts), that doesn't mean you are not successful at jiu jitsu. Not everyone trains martial arts to win tournaments.
