This is an amazing performance. Laurent has an excellent baritone voice and I especially like the vibrancy of the orchestra. Really emphasizes Bizet's music.

Although there are no English captions, I have seen Carmen a few times (and Carmen rewards being seen even more than being listened to). Escamillo's song describes the romance of the bullfighter's image, and then opens the brutality of what lies behind it. He gives the impression of being as willing to kill a human being as a hapless bull. Carmen is the story of opera's ultimate "bad date", and Escamillo almost gets her out of a terrible "relationship" with the opera's "protagonist".

I'm getting a bit emotional watching this. This video was the first time I ever really heard opera. I was maybe eight years old, and God knows how I found it, but I fell in love. I would watch it over and over again, entranced by the music, dreaming about what it would be like to perform something like this onstage. I'd never seen or felt anything like it. When I was twelve, I started classical voice lessons. This year, I'm going to university to study vocal performance. I can actually say that this video changed the course of my life.

I went to find out more about FNAF because of the comments in this video. Now that I know a bit about it, I really like how the 'Freddy' character plays this song for a man who goes back to his job every night even though he's perfectly aware he could quit, and that his life is at risk. Like Escamillio, he lives for the triumph of beating the 'bulls', and the thrill of the fight. ;w; Carmen is a powerful, beautiful opera, and I'd glad the spirit of this song lives on even in a music box reference!

Your toast, I can return it to you Sir, sir, because with the soldiers Yes, the bullfighters can understand each other For pleasure, for pleasure, they have the fights! The circus is full, it's a day of celebration! The circus is full from top to bottom The spectators losing their heads The spectators shout at each other loudly! Apostrophes, cries and noise Pushed to the point of fury! Because it is the feast of courage! It is the feast of the people of heart! Come on! On guard! Come on! Come on! Ah! Toreador, on guard! Toreador! Toreador! And think well, yes, think in combat That a black eye is looking at you And that love awaits you Toreador, love, love awaits you! Suddenly, there is silence There is silence, ah what is happening? No more cries, it's the moment! No more cries, it's the moment! The bull rushes out of the bullring! He rushes! He enters, he strikes! A horse rolls Carrying a picador "Ah! Bravo! Toro!" the crowd screams The bull goes, it comes, it comes and strikes again! Shaking his banderillas Full of fury, he runs! The circus is full of blood! They escape, they cross the gates! It's your turn now! Come on! On guard! Come on! Come on! Ah! Toreador, on guard! Toreador! Toreador! And think well, yes, think in combat That a black eye is looking at you And that love awaits you Toreador, love, love awaits you! Toreador! Toreador! Love awaits you! The song is about the excitement and danger of bullfighting. The singer tells the toreador to be on guard, but also to remember that love awaits him. The song is full of energy and excitement, and it captures the thrill of the bullfight. Here are some additional notes on the translation: The word "toreador" is a Spanish word for "bullfighter." The word "toril" is a Spanish word for "bullring." The word "banderillas" are small, barbed sticks that are used to irritate the bull. The phrase "l'amour t'attend" is French for "love awaits you."

When I was much younger, I was given this advice. Never sit too close to the stage. Then you see the singers wearing a pound of pancake under the hot lights and it will start to run after a while. Then you notice that these paunchy, middle people are trying to pass as star struck teenagers and it doesnt work . Takes away from the suspended disbelief. Sit in the middle so you dont see too much.

L'amour t'attend!

I'm here because of Carmen Jones' Husky Miller: -------- Thanks a lot, I'm sure glad to be, to be where I can see so many friends of mine. How've I been doin'? How've I been doin'? If you really wanna know the truth, I'm doin' fine! Seventeen decisions in a row an' only five on points, the rest was all K.O.,Jackson an' Johnson, Murphy an' Bronson, one by one they come an' one by one to dreamland they go! How's it done, you ask me, how's it done? I got a trainer man who taught me all I know. Sure feels good to have him in my corner, hear his voice a-whisperin' low: Big boy, remember, you must remember: Stan' up an' fight until you hear the bell, Stan' toe to toe, trade blow for blow. Keep punchin' 'til you make your punches tell, show that crowd whatcha know, until you hear that bell, that final bell, stan' up an' fight like Hell!

When you fight out in the open air, in a patch o' light, the ring looks small an' white. Out in the blackness, out in the blackness, you can feel a hundred thousand eyes fillin' the night. Cigarettes are blinkin' in the dark an' makin' polka dots around the baseball park, people are quiet, then there's a riot! Someone's just planted one right smack on the mark! Someone's hurt, you kinda think it's you, you hang around the ropes, that's all you wanna do, you look around to meet your trainer's eyes, beggin' you to see it thru. They say remember, you must remember: Stan' up an' fight until you hear the bell, stan' toe to toe, trade blow for blow. Keep punchin' 'til you make your punches tell, show that crowd whatcha know! Until you hear that bell, that final bell, stan' up an' fight like hell! Stan' up an' fight, stan' up an' fight, an' fight like Hell!

You're a bit unfair. Doubtless I'll be corrected if wrong, but I seem to recall that Mlle Dessay once said, when asked about musical influences, that M Naouri had taught her most. Incidentally, LN is on the Christie DVD of Rameau's Les Paladins (a sort of Osmin part) and along with the other artists, explained his role, with such perfectly spoken English that I had to check that he is actually French. BTW I think Orphee was at Lyon
