Bitonto Pizza reacts to DIY Brick Pizza Oven Build Videos on YouTube ( Building a Pizza Oven )

There's a lot of good advice and bad on building pizza ovens on KZread. We take a look at a couple of popular videos, call out the good and the bad, and fill in some of the gaps. Hopefully this will help you as you plan your own pizza oven build.
Here are the videos I reacted to:
2017 Shawn Nofzinger : • My first Pompeii Brick...
Lowes Canada : • How to Build a Pizza Oven

I am making my half barrel template out of 1/4" plywood. The first 1 I rushed and the plywood cracked. The 2nd one I dunked in the pool after cutting and then used ratcheting tie down straps to form the half barrel shape. Then I put the template in place with straps still holding the proper form, then I put some wet rags on top of it and covered it with some canvas to let it shape better overnight. By doing a half barrel shape the whole depth of the oven, I saved time and was easier than most vids I saw.

It is definitely an easier build. I'm not a fan of the cooking experience in the half-barrel shape. That being said, I'll bet yours makes great pizza!
Wow, I have learned a lot just by watching this video

That's fantastic! Thanks.
One of the DIY Pizza from Lowes materials used cement and rebar for the capstone and yes they did not mention whether fire clay was used in the mix. They also stated they didn't like how the CAPSTONE turned out. I managed to find a THICK GRANITE remnant and had it cut to size for $100 for my capstone. GRANITE can handle temps of well over 1000 degrees.

Wow, that's an interesting idea. Granite has different thermal properties (when you touch marble it feels cold because it absorbs the heat from your hand quickly. I don't know how well it would perform radiating the heat back into the oven. Let us know how it turns out!

@@BitontoPizza marble isn't granite, but it's calcium based, while granite is silicon and aluminium oxide based !
Thanks for pointing out that the height of their barrel shape had a much too tall opening. I had already lowered my plywood template/form a couple of inches and just lowered it a couple more inches due to your comment. Thanks!

Glad I could help!
1:10 he does not disclose it, but that's a Forno Bravo design and method...

Ah
I opted to use all fire brick above my THICK GRANITE capstone; none of the reddish brick that are common on the outside of fireplaces. Heat does rise. I managed to figure that out before i found your video.

LOL... yeah, I don't think heat rising was news to anyone. ;)
Hello any ideas on how to make the lowes build a little more better quality ?

It's not the quality, per se, but the design. I recommend you take a look at Forno Bravo's Pompeii plans.
If you level the bottom fire bricks of the oven properly, herringbone isn't so important and saves a bunch of cuts.

I'm not sure how it saves cuts if you are making the floor circular, I'll have to think about that one. My concern is that the oven expands and contracts so that even the most expertly-build oven may see some shifting of the floor bricks which can lead to little points. That's the whole purpose of the herring-bone technique. I would prefer to use large soapstone tiles than bricks for the oven floor.
Your point about buying a premade pizza oven makes sense but a stainless steel pizza oven in my backyard just doesn't light my fire.

Mine is premade and refractory concrete, not stainless steel. That said, I agree! I had a stainless steel Ooni which I loved. I love my Zio Ciro much more!
Pizza ovens do not have to be perfectly level. You are not cooking a liquid or oily concoction that is going to run to one side of a pan...as long as it appears to the eye to be level.

Good point. The just need to be level enough. I'm probably being too picky on that point.
Though yes, a higher temp glue would be better for the base but who cares? Heat rises and those wall paver bricks they used for their base are very heavy and with all the fire bricks on top of the base, it would take an over 8.2 earthquake or a huge hurricane to budge it.

The annoying music was totally unnecessary specially that you are talking criticizing

Sorry about that. I've been paying more attention to the background music volume, or if to included it at all in subsequent videos.
There are too many ovens one can buy that will perform a lot better than if you can make an oven yourself. I don't think making your own oven is worth the effort.

Yeah, that was my conclusion, too. I actually have a video on that, maybe you already saw it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3iIpdeEaK_Scbg.html
