This is one of most disturbing fucking things I have ever seen, this just happened to a friend yesterday, she lost everything. She never made a Microsoft account, never set up Bitlocker with her local Windows account, nothing. Yesterday she turned on the computer, "Enter the recovery key for this drive." This is beyond ridiculous; I am so glad I am on Linux.

Thanks for the info Chris. This is scary knowing how many people unknowingly setup a MS account on their brand new machine, then have no idea what you are talking about when you try to fix an issues like this. I did my share of "nuke and pave" from Windows issue and even a few bitlocker issues in the past.

On an Asus ROG laptop where I had activated BitLocker this happened recently after a BIOS (UEFI) update. I had the password kept safe on a backup disk. In just happy I never use the Microsoft Sign-In for anything. They have too MUCH private information on the cloud... just waiting to be cracked by pirates.

This is one of the reason I like Linux so much and been using it as an secondary OS for years, because microsoft just locks your computer up and holds your files hostage until you log into something. This is just sad and nothing comparable to this has happened to me on Linux :/

@@ChrisTitusTech my Microsoft account says I dont have any devices? I chose option 2 when taking my hp360 back to factory settings because that's what it said to do if your giving the pc away and now it wont restart because its asking for bitlocker key that apparently doesnt exist!

I have had my IT guy working on this for 3 weeks, locked out of work PC, some info was stupidly not backed up, and have been told its lost forever. So had one final couple of hours scouring the web and now WOW! - Got into the area required straight away, keys shown, I haven't tried it yet as my PC is currently elsewhere, but it looks like we are good to go as the Bit locker key was presented to me. Chris not all hero's wear Capes!🏆😜 One happy person subscribed and will look at your gear page. Best Wishes and Thanks Again!!!

Oh my my. This just saved me years of data that would have been lost to ignorance. I once mistakenly wiped clean a disk containing 5yrs of data. It was a lesson learned the very hard way. The moment I found myself in the same situation, I decided I will comb the web for an answer and poom!!! I got this link. Thank you so much. I did this in no time.

I personally prefer Veracrypt (which is a fork of Truecrypt). Why use a probably compromised solution such as Bitlocker when you have good alternatives available?

Agreed, this is more of a solution for folks that has this automatically do this for them. Microsoft is automatically turning bitlocker on when a Microsoft account is connected (using the store for example) and the laptop has a TPM chip. It's pretty messed up and caught me off guard at work this year.

You're the best! I was so desperate but you really helped me out! *Tip for students*: if you can't find your Bitlocker key in your personal Microsoft account, try signing in via your organization (i.e. the Microsoft account you created with your uni e-mail address)...for some reason the bitlocker key might be there!

You must keep the password safe somewhere OUTSIDE that computer.

Save to PDF and put on a thumb drive and print out the recovery key. You don't just have to choose one backup 😉

I was supposed to edit a short film for a school project while driving back home from a vacation but then this bitlocker came up, 2hrs of transportation where I could possibly finish the film or somehow make progress wasted. Very informative Chris. I have a question, what key or keys, in particular is this being referred to? I ask, because when I was attempting to enable my TPM in the BIOS, a message popped up, giving notice about "loosing" some data key(s), that if so, your data could not be accessed again!
