No dissing anyone here - there's levels to MMA and not every fighter is good enough to have a UFC career. Other guys come to the UFC too late in their career, or without a solid MMA foundation. This was originally going to be a Top 10 but we cut it to a 5 for length... if you like this we can do the other 5 as a sequel.

UFC is also the highest level. Some guys can dominate a small promotion and get eviscerated when they are no longer that elite tier.

Prime Cro Cop was an absolute monster. He left it too late with the UFC unfortunately. Josh Barnett described Cro Cop as the best fighter he ever fought in his career. Pretty high praise given he fought Nogueira, Couture, Arlovski and Mir to name a few. A shame UFC fans never got to see the real Mirko.

It's crazy the opponents he has faced often multiple times by the times he got to ufc, he had been in so many wars against brutal opponents literally fought every huge puncher in his era and many of those who went onto great success in the ufc.

I heard a story about Cro Cop kicking a pad his trainer was holding. Apparently Cro Cop was trying to give a guy a couple pointers on how to generate more power with his roundhouse. When Cro Cop demonstrated, the bag broke loose from the handles and flew across the gym like something you’d see in a movie. Cro Cop was a scary dude.

I was a major fan of CM Punk in the WWE, but even I’ll admit that it was pretty ridiculous that he was even allowed in the UFC. He had no real fighting background at all, and was already in his mid 30’s at the time of signing. I still give him credit for giving it a try, but Dana White should have never let him sniff the main card unless he earned it.

CM Punk wasn't a flop. He was only brought in to be the star attraction, not die in 30 seconds and make money. He did all of those successfully. Both fights were the most viewed on the cards they were on and he was paid well. It didn't diminish his star power and he got out before suffering any more. That's a huge success to me! By coming and not being that good it finally showed that it was a sport for athletic people not just guys who like to fight. Tank Abbot was the precursor to Kimbo but with out KZread. I think it was a combination of things in Mirkos case. Cro Cop was a smaller speedy heavyweight. It went downhill once he hit mid 30s. He’s on record saying he didn’t think it was important to train in a cage at first either. He did get Gonzaga back eventually and had a decent run as an older guy and changed a lot of his style. It’s easy to shit on him (you didn’t but lots do) and say he couldn’t hack it in the ufc, but this was also when Tim Sylvia was the longest tenured heavyweight champ and he lasted 30 seconds with Fedor compared to the epic match Mirko gave him.

After the head kick KO loss, it did a number on him mentally and that lead to his disappointing run in the UFC.

I was thinking the same. But it’s a sport where one well timed hit can end things. Askren arguably has the higher skill level in his area but Masvidal wanted to kill him, sometimes that instinct outmatches pure skill. Plus everyone knew Askren was gonna try to shoot immediately for a takedown, he was the cause of his own demise there.

there were a few things that caused Mirko to not come in right. 1) he didn't take the UFC roster very serious due to the fact everyone in pride was viewed as the best, 2) he refused to learn how to work a cage for most of his UFC run, 3) that Gonzaga kick fucked him up. but besides that, he wasn't losing to journeymen. Gonzaga was an ex Chute Box fighter.

As an ex amateur boxer my biggest fail was choosing to fight when I was just about getting over food poisoning ...I was young and arrogant and thought " well the opponents smaller than me and he'll be lucky if he lands a punch ' well he was one of those small squat solid fighters with a lower centre of gravity and in rd 2 he did land a punch to my abdomen and to say that I ' lost my mud ' would be an understatement .I had liquid evil running down my legs and to top it off it was the only time that my father came to see me box and he was an old skool irishman .Afterwards he said " Son I have to say that your performance stank , you really stunk the place out but look on the bright side you were doing pretty good until the arse gravy started running down your legs " LOL .He thought it was hilarious, when we got home he said to my mother " I think our son should take up table tennis cos that washing machine is going to earn it's money tonight " I was devastated but cos of my old man's sense of humour and his way of looking at things it soon helped me get over it
