Bishop Barron Presents | Dave Rubin - Has Liberalism Failed?

Friends, it is my pleasure to share the latest “Bishop Barron Presents” discussion, featuring author and podcaster Dave Rubin. In our conversation, we uncover the underlying issues fueling today’s partisan politics and the culture of contempt. Further, we discuss how to engage in constructive dialogue for the sake of the common good. We also examine:
- Classical liberalism and how it relates to other political systems
- How “woke” politics undermine a truly liberal society
- The limits of liberalism and Enlightenment values
- Freedom and responsibility in our social order
- The emergence of idolatry towards political leaders
- The Jordan Peterson phenomenon
- And how to have a productive and healthy religious argument
Stay tuned for future “Bishop Barron Presents” conversations. These videos will focus on pertinent intellectual topics, where I engage with speakers from across varying religious and political perspectives. My hope for these videos is that they serve as an antidote to partisanship and unchecked ideology.

@@tallotta1 The entire history of God's people is connected to sin, separation, acknowledgment of our sins, redemption, and eventually evangelization. Today is no different. No matter the storm that brews, we are called to live holy lives following after the example that Jesus and the Apostles gave to us. You and I both know that we cannot escape this fact. I wish there was more holiness and passion for the Church than is exhibited. In response, I am doubling down, following Jesus, and working out my salvation with fear and trembling. I’m an African American but I’m completely against affirmative action. My wife was the top of her medical school class but some people assume she got there because of affirmative action. Affirmative Action only leads to disrespect of hard working minorities. What we should be advocating for is resources and good teachers in minority schools.

The term “affirmative action” takes me back to the 1980’s. As part of affirmative action, General Motors hired some African Americans engineers out of college. Talking to senior white engineers at that time one told me “those guy were shoved down our throats don’t know anything so we just ignore them” A perfect set up for failure.

I second the call for good teachers, but additional resources aren't necessary. The USA already outspends most other developed countries in dollars spent per student, and multiple studies have shown that increasing funding to schools does not show an appreciable increase in student outcomes. The two most important factors for academic performance are stable 2 parent households who prioritize education, and capable teachers who have been trained in the 6 core strategies identified by the Institute of Educational Sciences, the research wing of the Department of Education. Only the black community itself can meaningfully address for former issue, and the latter can only be really addressed by realizing that we have limited resources when it comes to top-flight teachers (there are only so many of them) and making open-eyed rational decisions about their distribution. Not everyone can have, or will get, a top-flight teacher, it's statistically impossible, but can we at least make sure we get competent teachers?

  • @stevegarrisi9130

@@keymaker2112 I agree. Teachers are undertrained and underpaid especially when they first started. Also, the schools that need good teachers can’t afford to pay them. There should be a system to put good teachers where needed.

I had a very serious heart to heart talk with him and he told me he only wanted the most religious, serious, conservative people in his church. I told him he should want the drunks and drug addicts in the front row, that is what his job is about. He listened, but had a hard time accepting what I said. "... You believe in individual rights, in essence, if you are a legal member ..." That qualification is pretty awful sounding because slaves were not legal members. Probably not the best way to start out and a quick path to downvotes. I get it, if you have been convicted of a crime, your liberties are checked, same thing if you come to this country and overstay your visa, etc. But it's strange to feel the need to call that out so early in the conversation because you can put anybody in that class for 'technical reasons'. Classic Liberalism would do its best to keep those scenarios as outliers.

@Lavee Yang that’s a good question. I would say that Liberalism is what paved the way for postmodernism because it equivocates freedom with mere license. When freedom is defined as simply being freed from control of others, (rather than a classical understanding of freedom as self-control and restraint, a freedom from temptation) I think a relativism where truth is subjective becomes more likely. However, I think you are right to say that if we did address the problems of modernity, liberalism would not have such a sting.

As a protestant, there is much I admire, respect, and am attracted to about the Catholic Church. But one thing I think protestants have done extremely well is teach and promote the Bible. I know Sola Scriptura is a point of dissent between us. But I think Catholics, in reaction to the reformation, deemphasized learning the scriptures to their great disadvantage. Just one point. There is much to criticise in the protestant churches as well.

I agree as a Catholic Christian. If things didn’t go too far between Luther and the Church and he didn’t renounce communion with the pope, no doubt he may have started his own order among Franciscans and Dominicans that put much deeper devotion and emphasis on scripture. Alas this did not happen and the church is more divided than ever, but it seems to me that Catholics have been approaching bibles more recently with Lectio Divina for instance. But for us, the Bible is not THE culmination of the faith, but Mass and the Holy Eucharist. Not everyone can read the Bible and know what it means in fullness, but everyone can truly receive Jesus body, blood, soul, and divinity.

As a devout Catholic I believe you are absolutely right. I was born and raised in the Catholic Church but never actually sat down and read the Gospels until I was 35. While the Source and Summit of the Christian Faith is the Eucharist, you have to "climb" to it with the Word of God under your feet. Otherwise, you are on the summit and truly don't understand why.

I believe protestants seem to have an issue where 'the holy spirit' is their guide. Where this can be literally just 'ego'. I see more people leave the faith because of what protestants say 'in God's name' than any pull from any atheist. I believe that Catholicism allows for intellectualism that generally Protestantism doesn't allow. Thomism specifically is a very solid philosophy steeped in millennia of philosophical thought. Lewis was the last protestant I saw coming from this place. I wish there were more as Lewis (to me) was the best evangelist we have had in the last 50 years. His call to God's reason similar to Aquinas speaks to people. I find it much easier to come to God through philosophy and reason, then leading into Grace then into faith. As compared to "you will burn because you don't believe exactly as I do". As Catholics, we cannot make any claim to God's judgement. So while we are outside of the bible as well, we believe God gave all of man wisdom even the atheist. And we MUST be able to speak to that logic rather than demand against that God given logic. This is why we follow the tradition rather than just the bible. I believe the results speak for themselves and we will continue to see a loss in Evangelical and Fundamentalism due to the inability to engage that wisdom. There are some protestant denominations that get it right, but they aren't the loudest. It is usually the one embarrassing all Christians that are the loudest. Where I have to go and undo the damage (as I seem to have to do daily).

Very thoughtful post. A quick comment on sola Scriptura... Having come from protestantism to Catholicism, I continue to be baffled by the dismissive nature protestants have concerning sola Scriptura. World literacy 200 years ago was roughly only 12%; and this was 300 years after Luther's 95 objections. Though thankfully today the numbers are nearly reversed, the doctrine doesn't seem to me to be creating church the "true" church. Now that all believers have the Holy Spirit to lead them to truth, each individual gets to decide what is true. Sola Scriptura (as far as it's implemented today) is relativism.

Today, having a clear faith based on the Creed of the Church is often labeled as fundamentalism. Whereas relativism, that is, letting oneself be “tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine” seems the only attitude that can cope with modern times. We are building a dictatorship of relativism that does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of one’s own ego and desires. -Pope Benedict XVI

What a humble comment at 27:47 from Rubin! Very nice moment! Regarding Peterson and his ability to make Bible attractive THE MOST important fact was that he is NOT a religious figure. If a priest told the very same words such big crowds would never come and listen, that is a said but crucial fact, IMO. People simply hate obeying authorities, that is why religion is less and less popular. Everyone wants their own way of life. Ironically the greatest happiness lies in sharing things with others, doing them together. Why people love Christmas? Beause suddenly we all do the same things and we understand each other.

I believe one problem our society has right now is that idealism is currently often misconstrued as naivete, and thus weakness. People are taught not to work towards the "unattainable" good by virtue of it being unattainable, whereas the point of the ideal is that it is something that you would constantly work towards bit by bit, and even if you cannot attain that ideal, you are still far better off as a person because of the effort and experience gained in pursuit of that ideal.

The Tocqueville Effect: "The phenomenon in which as social conditions and opportunities improve, social frustration grows more quickly. The effect is based on Alexis de Tocqueville's observations on the French Revolution and later reforms in Europe and the United States. Another way to describe the effect is the aphorism "the appetite grows by what it feeds on". For instance, after greater social justice is achieved, there may be more fervent opposition to even smaller social injustices than before." This would also be an example of René Girard's Mimetic Theory, and as you both recognize here, is an infinite regress ("Battling to the End"), leading either to the Kingdom of God, or the Apocalypse.

I had already made this acknowledgement to my circle of friends and religious more than a year ago - that Jordan Peterson has remarkably achieved what the church fails, and still failing, to accomplish outside of the church walls. Unfortunately, JP is unique but fortunately, we are living in an era of digital technology where he can still reach a worldwide audience

@kptins What left uses most often is stoking envy in people. You don´t need education, patience, hard work, any particular ability to envy and hate your neighbour. That´s why it works so smoothly. "Look at him, he has more money and happiness than you! He OWES you a part of that, go and ask him to share it with you. If he rejects, destroy him and take what has left. This is socialism in which I lived until my early twenties. Unlike you, westerners, I recognize their language so very well. And can tell you right now the end of this "liberal" story - the total loss of freedom. Those who started that would eventually become victims of their own tactics. All of that was here before ...

Not really, classical liberalism logically leads to progressivism and Marxism. The only reason people try to draw a distinction is because they find classical liberalism emotionally attractive, but disapprove of the logical consequences of liberalism; the problem is that this position is logically inconsistent.

I don’t like to see our church get involved with politics because all priests and bishops have their own opinions. But they all agree to the word in the Bible so they should focus on that fundamental but in the other hand the bias in me appreciates the conversation with Rubin since I am a big supporter of his role in society. So I’m happy to see this but I’m scared what it could do to peoples opinion to the church

Just an amendment you mentioned the Catholic left but here on youtube there are on the Catholic right back to Pius V and nothing is right after the Council of Trent. No matter what you say some people will not engage in dialogue but in a diatribe, I also concur that my Dad always brought me to Church, and till I take my last breath I will always love him for that. Part of the problem with the classical liberal view of the individual is that it sees the person as self-contained autonomous unit. This especially becomes visible in the writings of someone like Ann Rand. In one respect this is true in that it is a reflection of the falleness of the human condition, but it does not reflect our true nature as person - as persons we are inter-connected with each other and as Metropolitan John Zizolous of Greece states in his book "Being as Communion", there is no such thing as one person. To be a person is to be in relation. This is also consistent with the Biblical message that we are created in the image of God. Eastern Orthodoxy has more completely maintained this important intuition whereas the west has often lost touch with this intuition especially since the Reformation.

The liberal conception of man - Man is treated by liberalism as primarily a self-interested kind of thing. Man looks out for his self-interest above all else, which may at times include the interests of others, but always in order to maximize his own self-interest. Since man has the essence of being self-interested, he becomes a good human in an Aristotelian sense when he achieves his self interest. The best way to make man good is therefore to remove as many obstacles which hinder the realization of his self-interest as possible. To achieve this end the government seeks to restrict self-interest as little as possible, and prevent private citizens from restricting each other’s self-interest as much as possible. Implicit in this is the axiom that all men are equal in a certain sense, “before the law,” for lack of a better term. From this it follows that the contract is the cornerstone of all human relationships, with contracts being how different self-interests are achieved through cooperation, and the government ensuring through laws and their enforcement that no contract obviously harms another’s self-interest.
