Bishop Barron on the Coronavirus Quarantine

Blaise Pascal said, “All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” This Pascalian “mot” has come to my mind a good deal in recent days as our entire country goes into shutdown mode due to the coronavirus. Perhaps we could all think of this time of semi-quarantine as an invitation to some monastic introspection, some serious confrontation with the questions that matter-some purposeful sitting alone in a room.

Let us walk this journey with Jesus. I am enjoying reading my Bible. I also love The Book of Tobit...juicy and exciting. Trust God, Bob. He will never abandon us. I am starting to enjoy my exile. It is more like a spiritual retreat. Thank you God for Bishop Barron, the spiritual director I need NOW! 🙋🏻‍♀️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😊

Thank you Excellency! I've actually scheduled my day something like this: Morning prayer or Rosary, clean/tidy/organize/sewing project, lunch, Spiritual reading and notes, Educational Research, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, exercise or sewing project, supper, evening prayer, recreation, prep for next day, and night prayer. My goal is to try and stick to this as best as I can, that way I can finally manage to read all of St. Thomas Aquinas by Chesterton!😁🥰 (As an introvert...so far, I am secretly enjoying this time of solitude, but still praying for those who are ill or have passed away...)

I've been waiting eagerly to hear your thoughts on this Bishop. I live in South Africa and the virus is beginning to spread rapidly. I have been wrestling with a deep anxiety for the last month, fearful for my family. As far as I know, I do not have the virus, but the threat feels immensely real. I believe God has used the fear in my heart to draw me closer to Him again. My prayer life has exploded. Nothing comes close to calming my restless soul like spending time with the Lord in prayer. The more intense my anxiety, the more generous His comfort and mercy. My whole life I have felt that I needed to get closer to God, but procrastinated or delayed my prayer time, my Bible reading, etc. Not anymore. The fear this virus has instilled in my heart has led me to the daily overcoming of myself, my ego, and my selfish will. God has become the center again, and, dare I say, I thank the virus for that. I fear I will lose my life, but I no longer fear losing my soul -- The Lord Jesus Christ has it. Tomorrow is in His hands. You, dear reader, are in his hands. His love is greater than your fear and anxiety. Whatever happens, He has you. Oh death, where is your sting?

Look only at the positive points like families getting to slow down and spend more time together. If you only focus on the positive the negative eventually disappears. It seems like the health agencies are able to speed up and expand their work so look towards a vaccine and/or treatment way quicker than normal. May the Peace of Christ be stronger than your fear.

@corbin dallas In a hundred years or less, Corbin, none of that will matter to you and I. What will matter is our relationship with God and our obedience to Him; and, as Sacred Scripture points out on more than several occasions, our obedience to civil authorities (when possible) is part of that mix.

In addition to my school closing and life seemingly shutting down, I am an Orthodox Christian and our rich weekend and weekday Lenten services have been, for all practical purposes, cancelled. It is likely that our amazingly joyous Pascha midnight service will also be restricted. The Liturgy felt like the last thing I could cling to and now it's gone too. This movie you made is the best thing I have seen or heard all week and I am very grateful. I will get my Bible out and maybe reopen Pope Benedict's "Jesus of Nazareth" trilogy as a companion. Thanks again.

❤️❤️❤️ the rosary “now & at the hour of our death” Several years ago I was at eucharistic adoration praying the rosary with all my heart for a friend who was in his final moments and he was so scared. I focused on that line with him in mind “and at the hour of *his* death” and i kid you not, i was flooded with the smell of roses. It was so intense that I looked around in our tiny chapel to see if I missed something, there was only a gentleman sitting a few rows back... no fresh roses in sight. God is good. Our Lady is too ❤️ memento mori ❤️

I had chills in your first line, the rosary. How I LOVE MY MOTHER! Jesus gave her to us as he was dying. My dad, the Sisters of Loretto were advocates of the rosary. I keep one in my purse, each vehicle and all over my house. Even on my treadmill. I have smelled roses kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament, with no one else around. I have smelled roses to the point that I wake up and say, "Hi Blessed Mother." I smile and go back to sleep. Oh if Catholics only knew the treasure of praying the rosary, daily. How Our Mother LOVES HER CHILDREN!!!!😙🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

I am reading St. Augustin’s Confessions. His words are my struggle, his eloquence cuts like the blade of a scalpel, his admissions are a humbling acknowledgement of sin as poison wrapped in goodness, his shift from « being an offered to » to « being an offering of » is astoundingly childlike for such an intellect, his supplications are the renderings of my own, his unraveling of reality is like a spider’s web that traps the mind until it yields to a different way of seeing. I discovered you yesterday when watching one of your ads regarding the sacraments. I watched your first video and really identified with your passion for Christ. I live in Brooklyn, NY a hotspot for the virus. Beyond the quiet time I have had by myself, there is the challenge of functioning in a COVID community. I work closely with many of the nursing homes that were ravaged by COVID. I also have many contacts within the Orthodox Jewish community which has been struck hard. The discussion on how God fits into all of this has been lively and riveting. The day that all the hospital surgeries were put on hold was the day I was supposed to have a kidney stone removed. I am diabetic with one kidney and this has been difficult. At first the fear of death was overwhelming. The only way to survive was to go to an infested hospital which seemed like a death warrant. COVID has quieted New York. It has made us very aware of our mortality. I miss church.

Many thanks for the various recommendations, Bishop. For me, the hardest part is not being alone in a room, but rather, not being able to go out whenever I desire to do so, especially now, with this beautiful Spring weather here in southern Spain. Take care.

There is great wisdom in seeing this quarantine as an opportunity for greater spiritual introspection. AND my heart and prayers go out to all those parents stuck at home with small, restless children. Having raised 4 children, I remember the days when "sitting quietly alone in a room" was next to impossible - at least not while remaining awake!

Fortunately KZread still does believe in free speech, unlike the Catholic/Christian Church. Plus KZread wants my money, so they don't want me to stop using their product, ever. And I use it alot, since I have no life, as oldcorps76 on this thread rightly said, and I live in oldcorps76's wife's basement. She lives in her basement too. It's cozier down here. Bishop, I began Bible reading before the lockdown. My four wonderful children and loving Wife have not allowed any study, let alone imposed monasticism. It's been a Blessing for us to be together but a little different. I'm a Firefighter and my Wife is an engaged Teacher meeting with her students daily though not required. We have been attending Mass with you every Sunday, Thank You and God Bless You and Your ministry.

I think this is a blessing in disguise. Many of us have more time to devote to our relationships with God. We have more time to spend with Scriptures and studying the Catechism (very interesting and beautiful insight to what we as Catholics believe!). It’s really been a great time to deepen my relationship with God, and I pray that it is for everyone else. It is definitely a great time (especially with Lent!!!) to form good spiritual practices and virtues with your family. Of course, I pray these practices all last well after this pandemic, and for all those affected by it either directly or indirectly. To whoever may read this know that I am praying for you and God bless and keep you!! :)
