I like how at first glance these kids seem really messed up, but when you look at the environment around them it's easy to see where they got each character trait. It isn't just "the next generation is screwed" that's being conveyed here, It's "we built a world that does this to people".

i love how these animations can be interpreted so differently depending on experiences. i think this ones based on toxic positivity on telling people to just be happy and live in the moment. but doing things that are considered ‘living in the moment’ sometimes makes us feel worse because this is supposed to be enjoyable, why am i not happy? everyone else has fun doing these things so why cant i? like when people are trying to help but going out is almost just as harmful as doing whatever was on the list

I believe this is about a toxic first relationship. Yknow when you’re a kid, and you don’t know how romance works, and you think your first relationship is true love when it’s really anything but? I think that’s what this is about. It’s clear that Roxy likes girls, and may be allowing Jazz to manipulate her bc she doesn’t want to lose her. A lot of the songs in the soundtrack being titled “only you” is also a nice touch. It seems that Jazz wants to get Roxy to do all this dangerous stuff bc it’s “cool” in her child mind, but secretly, Roxy doesn’t want to do any of it, and just goes along bc she likes Jazz.

I don’t know whether this was intentional or not, but I find it fascinating how the picture of the naked woman’s vulva is in an entirely different style to the rest of the animation; it’s almost like there is something real and genuine in that, and in Roxy’s curiosity and implied attraction to the female body. It’s clear that Roxy isn’t really interested in completing the list, she’s just kind of going along with it, as a lot of youth tend to - swept up by expectations, peer pressure, and by constant advertising by corporations of sex and alcohol. But other women, and the intimacy of that, she is clearly genuinely interested in. It’s a stark comparison to all the chaos and mess of completing the list - there is some stillness and peace. I also love the complete absence of the main two characters parents, and the disinterest and lack of concern from other adults around them. Nobody is looking out for them, nobody cares. They have a lack of support and healthy role models. Hence they end up in a situations where they put themselves in risky and dangerous situations with very real consequences. They self-harm, just because - which demonstrates the social contagion aspect of many mental health issues (as is scientifically demonstrated for eating disorders and other negative coping mechanisms, for example). They’re trying to navigate the world and it’s a mess, there is no guiding light and it’s obvious they’re left to figure it out on their own. It very much feels that way growing up for a lot of us. Once we’re adults and we look back, we realise how little help and support we actually got. And for Roxy, who could be lesbian or bisexual, that must be extra confusing with all the sexualised depictions of female bodies. It’s hard growing up as a woman who loves women in a world that sells sex and turns the female body into an object to be consumed. I remember seeing naked women for the first time - unfortunately in pornographic contexts, which is unfortunately the case more and more for young people. It was a part of finding out who I was, but when I look back on it, it makes me so uncomfortable - I didn’t know who those women were, and it was clear they were there for male entertainment. They were marketed as just bodies performing sexual acts - I knew nothing about these women other than very explicit and intimate information about their bodies. Much like the image of the nude woman, who is just a body without a face that numerous people are visually consuming. It’s great seeing depictions of same-sex attraction in Vewn’s work. And it reminds me a lot of my own life in some ways. In all the chaos and confusion of life - for me it was trauma and living with PTSD, chronic pain, an unstable living situation and a messed up family - my love of women was the one thing that kept me afloat. Having a genuine connection with another woman was an anchor for me. At the end of the animation I was left hoping that Roxy is able to follow what she genuinely wants - build real, healthy connections with other people, with her friend, and to do things that actually makes her happy, rather than just going along with things.

for some reason, i really liked the part where he was spamming the button to cross, and the robot kept saying wait and then eventually snapped. I like it for a couple reasons, one, because me and my friend would do the exact same thing and joke about it. two, i wasn't expecting the wait button to lash out like that. it said rude things to the kid. and what i ESPECIALLY liked is when the kid wants to cross the road again, he thinks about pressing the button to cross, but then doesn't and crosses even with all the cars on the street. i'm not sure if it was intended, but i kind of saw it how some adults react to a child's question's or curiosity. the main character continually pressing the button could be like a child asking for help constantly. and then the adult unexpectedly starts yelling at the child and telling the child to go away. and then when the child still has a question to ask, they're afraid of asking it in fear of the adult lashing out, therefore doesn't ask their question and leaves it up to themselves to navigate the problem by itself.

This is interesting but I feel like it has a different meaning. Roxy is impatient, and the robot is literally telling her to wait. Just like she is impatient in her real life by rushing into all of these experiences so young. It is safer to wait. But she is too impulsive and can't do this, hence her running through the traffic the second time. Rushing life's experiences is a bit like running through traffic.

My theory on it is that even though the friends are both abusive to each other, they’re too close and attached to ever actually leave because then they’ll be alone. They care for each other in some capacity clearly, most evident from the main character saying “I didn’t see anything” when handing back the other’s glasses, but they can’t really show their care in healthy ways. “Only you” because loneliness is scarier than making each other miserable.

Man I love every animation you do. It always has a meaning behind it and I love the feeling of being able to just watch and start making theories about everything and eventually seeing what it really means. It’s also cool because there can be different ways of seeing things depending on who you are and what you feel in the moment, it’s just super intriguing yet depressing a bit at the same time.. I absolutely love that feeling.

ok i know i trashed on interpretations earlier but i havent been able to get this video out of my head. but it really gives the feeling of how.. disconnect and desensitization work.. i feel like a lot of vewns works follow these themes but this one in particular. you see these two kids do care about each other. they honour their commitments and each others feelings. but theyre trapped in a world where they really cant find a way to connect. - glasses sends roxy an article instead of talking about how roxys lifes been going - theres a sense of impatience and awkwardness with the installing of the cd - roxy goes along with what glasses is doing so they can hang out. glasses is only doing it because of roxy, they dont really know the purpose of the list either. neither of them care about the list, just spending time with each other - glasses themself gets upset at roxy 'hiding' under the mask but later on is also careful to not let roxy see them a quick note on sexuality and orientation: roxy seems to be gay [the painting and looking at the woman showering] despite all the adult stuff theyre doing, she gets embarassed at glasses seeing the painting, being in its presence. i dont know why the significance of this painting specifically. it means origin of the world and its impact ahs been fraught with cenosrship and discussions on how a painting about life itself and a glaring look at something conisdered very shocking to be on display. after reading abt it there seems to be two modes of thought on it: that it is a disconnected, dehumanizing portrayal of a vagina, where the absence of other feature of the subject exacerbates it OR that it is an acknowledgement and appreciation of a part of the body considered very tabboo. i dont know what view vewn herself has on this , but if you look at it from the disconnect side, it seems to point towards how porn [not to imply the painting is] is a distraction from the real relationships in your lives [in context of the video and how it distracts roxy]. personally i like the other view. compared to the ads for violent pornography and the grossness of the world, the painting feels comparatively mild and simple in its context, something kind of just there.. perhaps thats why its more a subject of embarassment for roxy. it isnt anything hardcore, its simply there and real, and without the facade of anything attached to it, appreciation of it makes roxy feel more vulnerable. she didnt have the same embarassment while spying on a woman showering till glasses pulled her away. living in the moment' is also a theme. its a false idea that everyone believes in through drastic action, not actual living in the moment and connection. the relationship between the two kids is hurt by how hard it is to live in the moment truly when the moment itself is something difficult to live through. you see this first in how the stop light is filled with advertisments for horrible things and its own attitude, leading for roxy to not even bother with it later on. this is the same mentality with the kids. they dont know how to connect or how to spend time together in a world bombarding them with ads [see how they text] or vying for thier attention in different ways. they rebel, but even their rebellion is based on consumerism, and is a feeble attempt at connection. they want to FEEL something by doing this but it just puts them more aside. the crazier the stuff they do the more dissatisfied they feel. the self harm was espeically glaring as an example of this. they dont even care about hurting themselves, they do it because they cant think of anything else. and similaryl to the stop light, roxy doesnt care about doing it but is speeding through it [the convo before theyre interrupted she just wants to get it over with, hardly living in the moement if youre just trying to get through it] glasses onyl cares about roxy, but only hurts her and is overbearing. roxy doesnt care about the list, but does about glasses and is frustrated with how things are going but doesnt even share till the end. its glasses who has to tell roxy the list is getting in the way but that moment is interrupted by the arrest. in that scene glasses is trying to communicate but doesnt try to get anything back from roxy, and roxy just goes along w it and dismisses it wtih i know i know etc . it reminds me of the stop light, how she keeps pressing the button to get it out of the way, the way she pushes ads and pop ups out of the way on her phone, the way eveyrthing is just trying so so hard to get to the heart of something. she just wants to do the list to fulfill the freindship but neither of them know how to do anything together the way they want. its cause theres nothing FOR them to do. the world advertises porn alcohol shopping smoking. it feels suffocating. they dont enjoy anything they do but they desperately want to be there with each other even where its a drag or they upset each other. the neomodern life is just tearing a friendship that could actually have meaning. it just ends up a toxic relatiosnhip where theyre horrible for each other but still care deeply, but they cant help it cause its just the impact of the world on them. theres a critique of neoliberal america and tech and consumerism [and consequently capitalism] with all the ads and drugs and porn and police. how the structure of urban life makes it very hard to give a place to teens, and only adds fuel to the fire that is. being a teenager. all the impatience and confusion and hostility and narratives and facades they deal with. now leaving them in a perpetual state of being unable to feel satisfied and fake connection and doing anything to satisfy the part of them craving something real. again why i believe origin du monde was meant as an expression of realness and why it is embarassing to roxy. tldr; glasses takes all ideas of how to help or do things together from the worst part of the world that throw themselves at the kids. roxy just goes along with it not knowing how to speak of it and repressing everything. and at no point in time do either of them feel they can be honest with one another because they dont know how. and its because this hyper consumerist, dead ended, dystopian tech ridden way of life is fundamentally opposed to sincerity and connection. unrelated; in terms of how it makes me feel.. it reminds me of the contrast of my life and my brothers. i never bothered to make friends because all this hardcore stuff scared me as an older teen, i knew exactly how far i could go with certain self harm tendencies when iwas a younger teen and didnt want to push it by hanging with people who did those things. so i spent all my time never bothering to connect with others - i just stayed home studied and browsed the internet. my only freinds were online or the religous quiet kids at school who studied all the time. my brother on the other hand.. he had friends that cared for sure but they did a bunch of stupid shit together. a bunch of stupid shit that put him in trouble and fucked up our family dynamics for months. among them was a situation where we could have died on my birthday. this video reminds me of him, it feels like how i see him live his life. even the music in it is the type of stuff he likes. it feels like hes constantly doing dangerous shit to see how far he can push it till something that wakes a feeling in him can happen, and its cause he rejects any attempt at connectoin with me and my sister but everytime hes tried toopen up to our mom that he loves shes punished him for it. now it feels like he wont bother unless its with his friends who are awful for him. i hate his friends cause even though i know theyre going through their own shit, their collective selfishness just makes them all hurt each other and themselves.

really well phrased! it's 3 am here so i don't have the energy to add my own thoughts at length, but i think you're definitely onto something wrt the expressions of disconnect and desensitization. there's also a strong sense of derealization. vewn's work communicates very well how living in a hyper-capitalist hyper-virtual world can stretch and warp sense of reality. there are literally screens on every street corner in her work, constant flashing gore and porn and death and violence. the screens depicting the list of bad kid things to do become increasingly flashy, fast-paced, and overwhelming, which almost causes them to reach a point where they simply wash over the viewer and become easy to take in without truly processing or caring about. roxy spams the button on the streetcorner and various intense pop-ups flash in front of her but she barely pays attention to it because she's inundated by it every day and no longer cares/pays attention. in contrast, scenes where she's alone with jazz feel stark, almost visceral--the gravity of existing in reality with another person is hard to grapple with in a world that encourages her to consume but never care. hence, as you said, they do various unhealthy things as an excuse to hang out with each other. interacting with this inundation of gore/porn/sex/drugs/nudity/buy-buy-buy is the only way they've been taught to interact with the world, and thus it's the only way they know how to interact with each other. i also agree with you wrt origin du monde being an expression of realness, and thus uncomfortable to roxy. to expand on that note, i think that between roxy blushing at origin du monde + looking at it on her phone and then hiding it + peeking in on the woman in the shower, it's not unreasonable to guess that she might be attracted to women. i think that particular series of events then is commentary on how desire works in a society like this--porn and gratuitous nudity/sexualization of women are commonplace and thus unremarkable to roxy. when women's bodies are depicted like a commodity, it inherently places them in the same category of disconnect that roxy interacts with the rest of society through. this is why she doesn't feel awkward about peeking at the woman who's showering--it's not like she hasn't presumably spent the rest of her life being taught to peek at compromised or vulnerable women out of nothing more than curiosity or mild interest while checking off another item on the list of bad-kid things to do. but when she sees origin du monde, the mildness, reality, and quiet intimacy of it is entirely unfamiliar. she cannot find a way to have a legitimately intimate conversation with jazz, despite their obvious care for each other, and nor can she find a way to explore her desire for women in a way that matters, despite her obvious interest in it. increasingly graphic capitalistic societies where everything--gore, sex, people, relationships, even just waiting to cross the street--must be marketable make it impossible for the teenagers growing up in them to connect with the world around them in a way that matters. anyway. that got longer than i meant it to and i don't know how coherent is but hopefully it's interesting to someone else! you can tell yr analysis was good because it provoked my own thoughts, as any engaging analysis should.

this definitely remind of peer pressure and when you turn a certain age you “have” to be doing certain things. teenagers get swept up in gateway drugs, alcoholism, etc. all because of peer pressure and how they want to fit in (when most of the time they don’t even want to do it, the symbolism being the mask and the glasses on the two characters). they have to check off a “list” on what is fun. i guess this just goes to show how much mental health matters, and how teens expected to “live in the moment” can have really dangerous consequences.

"Living in the moment" for the past four years has fucked my life up big time. Broke my leg barred out on xans and got arrested over a dozen times. Seeing close friends in states of acid-induced psychosis and dealing with the fallout of several destroyed relationships. Sometimes I look back and wish I didn't think the "bad kid stuff" was cool to partake in - although there definitely were a lot of fun times though ngl. Shoplifting groceries for months on end, breaking and entering places while high out of my own mind, all the vandalism, filming cool shit... Graduating from uni this year and looking at heavy court fines on top of student debt. was it all worth it? No. I should've gone to a therapist years ago for my undiagnosed ADHD instead of running wild on the streets. I regret everything, but life goes on. Maybe I still have a chance...

Friends often perpetuate this, and validate it. We do these things with each other or at parties to display to others, how advanced we are. How cool we are. How much we can hang. Once you grow up you can finally see from a top down perspective, how silly we were being. Like when the security kicked her out of the bathroom. It’s shocking to see children do these things for validation to be something they can’t. My $0.02

My interpretation is how people are rushing into things. For example, happy birthday texts and the way the person kept pushing the button. The list itself is just a bunch of self destructive habits done in a quick manner, and encourages you to rush it. All your animations and messages are super well done, and honestly very important in the current world we live in. I love how you mix "in your face" symbolism like all the ads everywhere, and how overwhelmingly bad the friend is for our main character, with more subtle examples of your message, like how the friend first tells our main character "you need to go to bed earlier". However throughout the entire piece whenever the main falls asleep their friend blows up their phone and even brings them home late at night. It's a perfect mix and makes your messages entertaining while leaving room for more analyzed looks at the same time. It's outstanding.

i think the message of this animation is best synthesised in the words that appear on screen at 4:33: “this is the life you’ve always wanted.” from the moment we are born we are fed ideas about what it means to live life. to be a teenager is to smoke, to drink, to party. and that’s exactly the path Roxy begins to follow when she is finally of age. mainstream media is largely to blame for this, as it continuously equates fulfilment to endangerment. throughout their day, the friends are bombarded by advertisements of cigarettes, alcohol, and violent porn. all of which are known to have harmful consequences. and that’s not even to mention the list which has turned delinquency into a fun little game. as well, this may be a reach, but could the reoccurring motif of courbet’s infamous painting perhaps be interpreted as a metaphor for heteronormativity? roxy clearly displays some interest in the female anatomy but is unable to explore that further as intercepted by her friend at every given opportunity.

I appreciate that this takes a route of explicitly showing the consequences of adolescent toxicity and endangerment. So many kids are unfortunately swept into this romanticized ideal of what being "independent and mature" is, that many arrogantly fall into harming themselves and others. There's a bundle of kids that don't have those resources and support groups, so it's easy for a peer to drive them into a life threatening addiction and label it as "relaxing or having fun". It's one thing to be aware that things haven't been easy, but it takes a big person and self respect to know you can't afford to damage yourself anymore. Your heart, mind, and body deserve better, and if a friend is trying to convince you to or casualizing harming yourself, it says a lot more about their own circumstance. It's selfish, and they are not a good friend.

It's more a commentary on what that kind of depression and hollowness can lead to. Kids get bored, decide to do stupid stuff that seems fun and harmless in the media they consume, but ends up going bad really fast.

Hey vewn your art really carries and inspires me. I'm commenting so it feels like I'm talking to someone other than my own self, but my brother just passed away from suicide the other night, and he always pushed me to create art. This video hits really close to home due to the willing to feel something and wanting to strive for that something. My young self always hopes to be an artist and to portray honest and open hard-to-talk-about subjects. Thank you for always animating and being a great, inspiring artist, - A young fan

I think the friend with the glasses is representing depression here. Leading roxy to doing dangerous stuff or just generally stuff that a lot of mentally ill people do. And with the "you're building a wall" and everything, it's like a voice inside roxy's head, telling roxy to do all those things

Another grandiose short film curation by Victoria Vincent (aka VEWN). This short film felt different, It felt much more focused in it's portrayal of evokement of emotion. Usually I find in their films that it propells you to examine the emotions and reactions of yourself and society through the actions of the protagonists through apathy as a coping mechanism, but this felt like we couldn't use said apathy and was annoyed and strung along just like the protagonist, even in subtle ways. The breaking of boundaries the cat-mask person had from the person with glasses was enunciated by the person saying "you're creating a barrier, a wall" and exclaiming they wanted to live in the moment when indeed they were just senseless acts of self-destruction or external destruction in order to cope with the commercialized capitalised tech-industrialized world around them (shown through the scene with the walking post that had advertisements on them and had no patience towards the protags lack of patience - also showing how the internet/technology is becoming somehow sentient and cruel, the phone full of advertisements, plenty of pop-up notifs, even a set of pre-made responses in response to a chat with the glasses-person). What I think this film is showing is the annoyance and exhaustion that comes with being the product of the internet, being constantly bombarded with advertisements, and promises of faux connection as in dire need of it. What I find really fucking interesting is the whole "I want to see you under the mask", the cat-mask person says "you better not fucking try to do that again" and when the glasses-person falls and their glasses fall off, the cat-mask person said that they "didn't see them". What I see this as is that they don't want to be seen authentically for who they are - only what they've bought to cover themselves up, for who they truly are (capitalism repressing our true selves), and idk kinda makes me wonder of the consensus of tech-induced authenticity of "self-expression" when it's really to hide their insecurities. I also like how when the guard gets food through a drive-through (something like food, he could get later as he *is* trying to arrest these two people but probably like our main protag, they're not getting enough sleep and probs doesn't have time to make food), they need to get that commodified and they say "uhhh can I get a motherfuckin uhhhhh" and "takes too long" due to the flashing advertisements and the problem of finding something so big hard to choose from, and the other person on the other line loses their patience (just like the walking post), saying "can you motherfucking speak ___ jesus christ". Technology and OVERSATURATION causes frustration due to be understimulated but LACKING geniune connection, and our protaganists friend are in search of it and we're simply lost with the protag as they go along without feeling like they can do anything due to their complete exhaustion. Caused by Capitalism, tech-industrialization, oversaturation, which comes with it lack of patience, empathy, and free will/agency. I also felt so connected to the part where the cat-masked person says "I overslept" or something or other and that they're tired, and the glasses person says "If I were you, i'd get more sleep" and the cat masked person said "oh yeah I guess" and then the glasses person sent them an article and yanked their phone out of the cat-masked persons hand and said *they* wanted to show it to them. It signals to me that the glasses person can only feel like they can connect with someone if they show the other person how *they* do it, if they were *them*, etc. Toxic and shows the lack of boundaries, but can also be said as a definite outcome of the society they're in and their desperation due to the commodification and inauthentification of it.

ANOTHER upload? You spoil us 🥰 And it really gets to me, how despite all the smoking of weed, cutting of their wrists, drug abuse, and getting arrested, they never see each other's faces. To me at least, it suggests that the kids are projecting themselves onto each other, each seeing the other as a foil rather than a friend. There's this anger simmering in their relationship because no matter how hard they may try, both "friends" will want different things out of life, and their "hanging out" will only make them resent each other more. The girl with the glasses wants to prove she's a big kid by living this hedonistic, self-destructive lifestyle. And the main character will continue to go along with it impassively, only to snap when being a "bad kid" becomes too much pressure, and push her "friend" away. This may sound like a bad take, but I think it has merit.

God this is amazing. This is actually some thing that I feel so connected with on a personal level. Your art really talks about themes I don’t see you touched upon too much. Your stylized dialogue and story time just gives all the meaningful lessons so much more impact. I’ve been struggling a lot with the mindset you portray in this video. And this really made me think. And also may I just say as a young artist myself you really inspire me. My work may never be as deep and meaningful as yours but I’m so grateful to consider you one of my role models. I hope more people who are either struggling with some of the issues you portray in your vids or young artists still figuring out their place in the world see you.

I love this so much. Tbh I love ALL of your work: the dreamlike feel, the exaggerated/distorted perspectives that take on a psychological meaning, the social commentary/satire, the voice acting, the stories, everything. The vibe is amazing (meaning it's disturbing most of the time but that's the point) and just so nostalgic and surreal, almost hypnotical. I can't put it into words, it's like emotions that don't exist (as everyone else has said in your comments). It always feels like it has meaning behind it, but even if it doesn't and it's just random creativity, I still love it. Plus, everyone can still get their own message/feeling from it, so...
