TOFD is a technique for single crystal probes used in weld inspections PAUT is Phased Array Ultrasonic Inspection. This type of inspection uses a probe with a number of crystals which can be fired independently enabling a large areas to be inspected very quickly and accurately. Additionally manipulation of the firing times allows beam bending for to extend the scope of the inspection.

Longitudinal waves, as they are fastest and arrive earliest. They are followed by mode concerned shear waves at about half the speed
