Birka and Hovgarden - UNESCO World Heritage Site

Birka and Hovgarden is an unusual UNESCO World Heritage Site. They're a pair of old viking settlements on an island about an hour's ferry ride to the west of Stockholm. They were heavily-populated trading centres from around 850-1100 AD when they were suddenly and mysteriously abandoned. There's some interesting archaeological research happening here, and it provides a lot of detail about vikings - still a people we know surprisingly little about!
