Birds of Mount Kinabalu, Borneo
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Mount Kinabalu, in the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo, is the highest mountain in southeast Asia and a world heritage site. Towering over the surrounding lowland rainforest at 4095m high, the mountain and its forested slopes are home to a unique community of tropical rainforest birds, many of which are endemic to the mountains of Borneo. Kinabalu Park Headquarters sits at mid-elevation on the slopes of the mountain and is a world-renowned birdwatching site home to many special birds including the iconic “Whitehead’s Trio” (Broadbill, Spiderhunter, Trogon). Over the past decade, Dr. Thomas Martin of the University of Montana has led a research project studying the birds of the park headquarters. This project has greatly advanced our knowledge of tropical avian ecology and, more broadly, life history evolution. Dr. Martin and his graduate students have produced many publications from this project in high impact journals such as Science, Nature Climate Change, Ecology Letters, Functional Ecology, The American Naturalist, and many more. This video represents a personal tribute to the wonderful birds of Mount Kinabalu, and was filmed mainly by myself over three field seasons (2018-2020) of research in the park. I have also included some clips filmed by friends. I also used a couple audio recordings by Greg Irving and Frank Lambert to improve the audio of this video.
Myself and everyone involved with the project would like to thank…
-Sabah Parks for their many years of support of this project.
-The government of Sabah and the Sabah Biodiversity Centre for permitting the research.
-The University of Montana.
-The National Science Foundation for funding a decade of research on Mount Kinabalu.
-All of the local Sabahan people who always welcomed us and made us feel at home in Sabah.
I also give thanks to these people for their contributions to this video…
-Rayner Ray found the Chestnut-crested Yuhina nest.
-Raoul “Nonno” Gobbo found the Eyebrowed Jungle-Flycatcher and the Hair-crested Drongo nests, and found and filmed the Mountain Wren-Babbler nest.
-Jordan Boersma found and filmed the 1st Fruithunter nest.
-Connor Armstad found and filmed the 2nd Fruithunter nest, and found the Mountain Tailorbird nest.
-Richard Aracil found the Yellow-breasted Warbler, Indigo Flycatcher, and Sunda Laughingthrush nests, and found and filmed the Bornean Forktail nest.
-Jonathan Eckerson found the Little Pied Flycatcher nest, and found and filmed the Mountain Leaf Warbler nest.
-Karl Heide found and filmed the Chestnut-backed Scimitar Babbler nest, and found the Checker-throated Woodpecker nest.
-Adam Mitchell found the Ochraceous Bulbul nest.
-Derek Arnold found and filmed the Whitehead’s Spiderhunter nest.
-Skylar Sargent found the Orange-backed Woodpecker nest.
-Enroe found and filmed the Bornean Treepie nest.
-Ryan Steiner found and filmed the Pale-faced Bulbul and the Orange-headed Thrush nests.
-Riccardo Ton filmed the Mountain Tailorbird nest.
-Holly Jackson found the Gray-chinned Minivet nest.
Also shoutout to the Borneo 2018-2020 field crews for being awesome and making it an unforgettable time.

This video was made as part of the long-running avian life history study at Kinabalu Park HQ led by Dr. Thomas Martin of the University of Montana. Please check out more bird nesting videos on the Martin Lab channel here... kzread.info/dron/Y5m26fTANGh8q5xlbW0hCw.html You will notice that many of the birds in this video are "color-banded", meaning they have a unique combination of an aluminum band and three color bands on their legs. These color bands allow us to identify individual birds in the field simply by seeing them. This is incredibly useful for many research purposes, but the most important is that they allow us to calculate annual adult survival, which gives us an estimate of how long these species live. Color-banding at this site has revealed that tropical birds generally live longer than temperate birds, but there is huge variation in survival among tropical birds, and this has great influence on the traits that these birds have evolved. This knowledge has led to many peer-reviewed publications in high impact journals such as Science, Nature Climate Change, Ecology Letters, Functional Ecology, The American Naturalist, and many more. The efforts made by foreigners in studying birds in Mt Kinabalu is very welcomed indeed.. this will surely encourage locals to take up ornithology as a field of study.. there are very few locals who are trained in that field
your videos are a blend of fun, facts, and fantastic visuals!

You should definitely visit Mt. Kinabalu and Sabah! Our decade of banding these long-lived tropical birds has resulted in so many birds of the park HQ being banded that photographers are often frustrated that so many of their subjects are wearing bands. I empathize, but feel that the scientific output of this project has made it well worth it.

@@TRForrester I'm a microbiologist myself at the University of Indianapolis and life-long naturalist. I have locally done some research monitoring the chytrid fungus in local amphibians. I also lead spring term naturalist trips to Costa Rica and Ecuador. I suppose if I could find a way to make it affordable for students Borneo would be right up there. Anyway, I understand your need to band birds. If the bands REALLY bother the bird photographers there is always photoshop to clean them up!
the best kinabalu
The effort beyond this making of the video definitely is not that easy as we see it with ease at our own comfortable zone.....heartfelt royal salute to the team for this phenomenal video. God bless. All the best.

Birds something very beautiful an some Birds very creative an intelligent you have to tracking after some birds to see how the bird functioning by building the net feed the little chicks go hunting and bring food home sometime we don't understand how things working but I guess this is an instinct that coming from nature which is still the bird must have some scale to do all this I like this video and this is similar to what I think in my opinion an of course God bless the birds6

incredible how well some of the birdnests are camouflaged, sometimes i thought "oh thats just some twigs or some treebark droped onto the ground and then you see the chicks sticking their head out as the parental bird arives with food. very awesome footage *thumbs up from a amateur bird watcher*
