Birds kill 200 lambs on a single Isle of Wight farm

Спорт

We visit Cheverton Farm on the Isle of Wight, where ravens, crows and other birds have killed 200 lambs this spring. The farm has a herd of 1,750 sheep. However, this is just the start. Natural England and the Roy Dennis Foundation want to impose 60 sea eagles on the Isle of Wight. Farmers and gamekeepers unanimously voted against the release. However, 80% of the island has voted for the release. The pro-eagle release argument is that sea eagles do not affect sheep farms in the Netherlands. The anti-eagle release argument points out that the Netherlands has different farming practices, including lambing indoors.

As someone who raised and showed sheep I find this very upsetting. However, there are things that the farmer/rancher can do. They can put their pregnant ewes in smaller pens a couple of weeks before they deliver, and not release them into open pastures until the lambs are two weeks to a month old. You can also easily train dogs to recognize the predating bird species. They can stay with the ewes and lambs once released and keep the avian predators away. I had a Whippet that protected my free range chickens from any birds of prey. He would run under any bird of prey barking until it left the property. He was fast and energetic enough to create such pressure that they wouldn't risk coming down on the chickens. He was amazing, and completely put an end to losses from birds of prey as long as I had chickens. Sadly, not reacting quickly with a solution makes the problem far more difficult to remedy. The predators have now become habituated to this easy food source. This will make it more challenging to pressure them enough that they give up the lambs as a food source. There's almost always a way for farmers and ranchers to successfully live along side of wildlife with little to no losses. If only they are willing to think outside the box and make some adjustments. There are solutions that don't require destroying our natural world or the animals in it. As a side note, that gigantic lamb that was stuck in the birth canal probably would have died anyway without the man's assistance with the delivery. This is another reason to segregate ewes in preparation for lambing. They can be in a concentrated area so they can be observed and assisted more successfully.

Dam Tito They have no reason to have dogs over the entire property. They aren't losing adults or even older lambs to predators. They only need a lambing pen, and a few dogs to cover the 20-30 acre area they have full term ewes and young lambs in. It's not difficult. Why shouldn't the farmers have to cover the minor costs I'm talking about. Those costs are just transferred to the consumers, and that wildlife belongs to all of us. Not just the farmers and ranchers trying like any other business to squeeze every dime of profit out of their operation.

They will pick the tasty bits off lambs even after they've gotten stronger, if they can. These newborns literally cannot move fast or far enough to keep them off; and the mothers aren't able to keep flying predators off them 100% of the time. An eagle snatching a lamb and feeding is one thing, but a 7 ounce bird pecking the eyes off a newborn lamb and leaving it to rot is entirely another.

Yes, there are issues. Grizzly had to change their spring protein feast on Brook Trout because the introduction of lake trout in Y. Lake decimated the creek trout spawn. So the bears changed.........to Elk calves, and then o;nce re=programed, it's not a big jump to ranch calves. In FACT. 22 of 25 calf kill one spring were the bears, but OF COURSE, USA ranchers blamed the wolves. Who needs facts??

This is an outrage! These farmers deserve full compensation or be allowed to control those who get a taste for their livestock. We also have the same sort of problems in California with all of it’s restrictions written by those who have no clue of what is really going on, or how quickly things can get out of control. When loses really begin to mount up and those in charge can’t or are unwilling to help, there is an old saying you see pop up on social media called SSS. It is an abbreviation for Shoot, Shovel, and Shut up.

I would like to add that we here in the states recently had a pair of Bald eagles which are also considered to be a Sea Eagle kill 54 Lambs in the state of Idaho. It’s something that should be considered when introducing Sea Eagles back to the Isle. While I also appreciate conservation efforts I sometimes feel that it’s done with a mindset that would be sometimes considered recklessly idealistic by people who have good intentions. We all know what they say about good intentions. The road to hell is paved with them.

This sheep rancher is extremely neglectful of his flock. Stop blaming the ravens! They only do this because the owner of the sheep allow it. I raise goats, and have NEVER had a crow or raven bother them! I have a border collie to protect them from predators, but most of all, I've spent years building a good relationship with the ravens who hang out here. Five years ago, I raised one from a baby that was rejected by his parents, probably because his beak was a little bit deformed. As he grew, the beak straightened out pretty well, but he will always have a little bit of a downward hook at the tip of his top beak which gives him a small gap. I think it actually helps him carry stuff, but it hasn't affected his ability to eat, he's a magnificent, healthy bird. As soon as he could fly, I let him go and he soared high, but came right back and I've continued to feed him ever since. If I forget to put food out, he comes and tells me. He somehow knows which window I'm closest to, and caws until I bring him food! I don't know when he started bringing me gifts, I only noticed after he left an old electronic Casio Databank watch (with no band) on the steps to my bedroom that I'd never seen before. Then I started paying better attention. One day I was out cutting brush with loppers getting ready for fire season. This bird and his mate watched me intently, sometimes cawing "advice". I thought it was just cute, but the next day he did something that shocked me! I heard him cawing excitedly outside my bedroom door, so I went out to see what was up. He flew away, but in that spot he left a tiny pair of titanium clippers, the kind Bonsai artists use to trim their trees! I have a lot of cannabis farms near me and these were obviously used to snip the buds off the plants to sell. Now that I've cleaned the sticky resin off them, they are really useful and I love them! I looked them up on Amazon, they retail for @ $16. That raven recognized that it was similar to the larger tool he saw me use the day before! That is the smartest thing I've ever seen an animal do! I'm getting quite a collection of gifts now. He seems to like objects that are sky blue, and he brought me a stone marble that's an inch in diameter. It looks like turquoise, but it's probably dyed howlite. It's really pretty, whatever it is, and a little spooky because it was my mom's favorite color. I'm going to make a pendant with that treasure!

Exactly the same on the farm in Dorset where I recently camped. Lambs being eaten alive by Ravens, Crows and Jackdaws. Natural England needs to make a huge apology very publicly and then take a long hard look at exactly what it is they think they stand for. It certainly isn't anything to do with the working landscape of England. Utterly shameful that the situation we have at present ever came to pass, but that is what seems to happen when 'suits' with a pair of green wellies are given responsibility for policy and the people in government could't give a toss because they are far too busy screwing up everything else. So sad to see these folks livelihoods so totally disregarded. Whoever thought re-introducing Sea Eagles next to a sheep farm was a good idea needs staking out for the Ravens......

Simple answer is to apply for an individual licence to shoot the corvids prior to and during lambing and to agree compensation from the people who support the release of these birds for each lamb lost to Sea Eagles, if there is no agreement then the farmer has the right to protect his stock.

Get some Anatolian Shepherd dogs in to guard those sheep/lambs around the clock. 200 is a costly loss.

If you own animals, you have a responsibility to provide for their welfare. This farmer should be brought up on animal cruelty charges.

You leave animals out in the field and you have made your choice. Pays your money, you make your choice. This is what happens all over the globe. Nature is cruel and we are the cruelest in nature by far. Same old story too many people to feed.

Farming is all about balance and 99.9% of all farmers over the years have been farming in balance with Nature. But what Mr Packham has been doing is wrong. I will definitely support the farmers to get a reversal.

Imagine someone taken your eyes and tongue out during the delivery. The moment of delivery is very painful moment and they hit right at that moment, ravens.

If the asso's say it won't affect the farmers, than the asso's have no problem giving the farmers compensation.
