Birds at a birdbath in freezing weather, Vancouver, January 2024 [PART 2]

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Documenting a rather harsh cold spell in the Metro Vancouver area in Canada, with temperatures around -10C, making liquid water hard to find for birds. Water is prevented from freezing locally with a hot water can in the midst of the ice.
Unique species appearances:
00:00:07 Golden-crowned Sparrow
00:01:00 Spotted Towhee
00:02:00 House Finch (male)
00:02:22 Chestnut-backed Chickadee
This video is straight out of the camera, no edits have been applied.
In such extreme weather the water in the bird bath is just enough to drink, not to bathe. If the whole bird bath was heated with a pool of liquid water, and birds were to take baths in it, that would probably lead to disastrous consequences. See: blog.nature.org/2022/01/31/sh...

Lovely watching the birds quenching their thirst.

Might their feet not freeze to the cement?

They came and went several times, so somehow it wasn't an issue for them. I think its very unlikely that would happen in this temperature. If it was -25 maybe it is more likely. Which is why I didn't let the whole bird bath thaw, otherwise they might be tempted to dip themselves or their feathers into the water, which could then freeze over a branch, and the result could be deadly. The water is kept just warm enough and small enough to sip from.
