Location: Denmark
Date: December 2020
Day: 2°C (35°F)
Night: 0°C (32°F)
------------------------------------
This is my second time on this location trying to photograph the Dipper. This time I am taking a different approach by using a home made sled rather than the big tripod. The sled lets me move closer to the bird in a very low angle without making a lot of noise and movements.
I am photographing with the Canon R5 and vlogging with the R6 and since it is my first time with vlogging with this gear, it is quite unfamiliar to me. Very interesting though to try this new autofocus with animal eye af.
In the behind the scenes I am talking about the sled and about how you can turn your ball head into a gimbal to save money and weight in your photo bag. I am also talking about why I am using canon R5 and R6 in this video.
A few questions:
1. Why are you using Canon equipment in this video?
I am answering that in the behind the scenes section of the video.
2. What is the brand of the sled you are using?
It is a home made ground pot - or ground sled:) It is made of steel and painted afterwards. I simply sat together with a friend ad figured out what would be the perfect shape of such a sled to make it easy to sneak in on shore birds. This was what we came up with. It is not being made anymore, but if you know someone who can weld, or if you can do it yourself, it is quite easy to make.
3. How do you deal with predators when camping in the woodlands?
Here in Denmark we do not have bears and probably less than 10 wolves in the country. That means you do not have to worry about predators, snakes etc. when you are camping.

Thanks Morten. “It’s not about equipment, its about the photos”, absolutely. I have always used Canon, (80D and R5 and before that several SLRs) but I felt curiously uncomfortable watching you away from your Nikon. But, as you say, it doesn’t really matter, its about the photos. Stay with this, it is your magic and for people like me what you do is just so inspiring. Equipment isn’t.

Im a r5 user, you mentioned the reliability of the eye af. I can tell you is struggled a bit in the beginning but now im used to it. Because i dont want to miss any shots if the eye af fails, i have set up TWO AF on Buttons on the back of the Camera. The „Common“ AF button uses the last set AF configuration, just like any other camera. The second Button (right next to the AF on with the little *) always uses Animal Eye AF. So my thumb only needs to move a tiny bit to either use the normal (Last used) AF method or the Animal Eye AF. This way its very fast and you get your shots more reliably.

Yes! A new video from Morten Hilmer! Love that you tried out the R5. I currently use a Sony A7III and Sony 200-600mm G lens (great combo). I hope you had a wonderful Christmas Morten! Keep the videos coming👍🏼

Love the video as always! Looks like you're using a single button focus. One nice thing I've found with the R5 is programming multiple back button's for different types of autofocus. I'm using all three buttons in the upper right for back button focus. The middle is always eye detect, the left is always single point, and the right cycles through them with the m-fn button. It's been a really powerful setup for me since all I have to do is move my thumb to override the eye detect when it misses.

This was really inspiring since I just switched to an R6 and built my own (very simple) sled 🙂 I might post a video once I've tested it.

Hey Morten, It will be sad to see you move over to Canon... I think people like to watch someone who uses the same brand of cameras and gear so they can follow along or learn something they may not have known about it. But, like you say your gear are tools for you and you need prime performance for your gear. As for me.... I make very simple videos and find frustration about autofocus with my Nikons. It would cost me a fortune to replace my big lenes and gear. But, I I enjoy your videos so much because of the detail you show . So when you make the move... I will still be waiting for the next video. Sayin' hey.... Greg
