Bird photography: Canon 400mm F5.6 Lens and Adobe AI Denoise software

In this one I spend a few days in the woods photographing birds with my unstabilized Canon 400mm prime lens and test the photos using Lightroom AI Denoise. Why pay extra for AI noise reduction software from DXO and Topaz? The Adobe Denoise results were surprising to say the least.

I remember a couple of years ago when you first tried out the Canon 400 mm prime lens, and you seemed to be a little disappointed with the results. I had just purchased Topaz Denoise AI and thought your photos from that lens would have been great candidates to run through the Topaz software. I still think the program is magic and run all my stock and other photos through it - I still shake my head at the quality of the results. On1 Photo Raw, Luminar Neo AI, Lightroom, etc., are all getting in on the action. These software programs will greatly assist many photographers, particularly those with more modest equipment or dealing with tricky conditions, as you were in the forest. I got a good laugh from the swan's landing - bloody hell!

Hi Alistair, thanks for your thoughts. I've learned a lot since I first tried out the lens with the 70D and become a better photographer from it. Those denoise software products are very good. I agree and I tried out the free trials. But I don't want to pay more monthly fees than I already am. That's why the Lightroom denoise works for me. As I already have Lightroom, it's completely free! 🙂. That swan was a great surprise indeed. I love the noise it made with it's feet as it came into land! All the best.

Oh my God what a missed opportunity with the landing swan! It would've made a great stock clip! At least you caught it good enough for youtube! I really liked the swan adventure! Wait maybe you could cut the clip where you are photographing the swan landing and upload it as stock! I think that would be a great clip... maybe even better than just the swan alone!

Thanks for the the video, very enjoyable. I use DXO Raw v1 and have used Topaz which are very good but I might try my Lightroom one now. Loved the 400 5.6 it is such good value and the quality is superb. Regret selling mine. Had it paired with my 1DX, great combo. Canon should have kept it going. Perhaps they will bring out an RF version at 4x the price 😂

Hi Doug, It is a great lens indeed. When the shutter speeds are fast enough it really is pretty sharp. I can recommend giving the Lightroom version a try out. Look forward to hearing about that. Cheers! AB

Hi, yes I was there. Unfortunately the sky was a bit grey for my liking. But I managed to get some more close-up stills and videos. How did you do?

@@andrewbalcombe1338 Yeah, the sky was not the best, but it could have been much worse. I did my best to isolate the most interesting cars and have some shots without people, but it was challenging... afterwards I visited the Japanese Garden in The Hague, but it was super busy, I had to wait 1 hour to be admitted in, and then, after 10 minutes, battery of my camera died (and I didnt have a spare one), but it was still worth it.

@@mzk7774 Great that you managed to get some keepers from the aircooled exhibition. Their are some real gems on display there. Never fails to impress me every year. And the Japanese garden too. You worked hard on Sunday 🙂. That's always the way isn't it regarding the battery. I remember doing a very important interview once. After it was over I realised I hadn't pushed the record button properly. Total fail!

It doesn't seem to be any better than the regular denoise filter in Lightroom or Photoshop

Hi Kitty, I've seen quite a difference myself. Perhaps it's less clear in the video than actually working with the files.
