Another thing no one ever really emphasizes that relates to modern parenting is the isolation of the families. There is no support network, no huge community during the length of the movie helping the parents, which is realted to parenting now. There isn’t the network of caregivers or support for parents now that there used to be in past generations.

This. My aunt lives in Texas and raises a kid basically on her own-the dad travels a lot, the extended family lives far away. I compare it to my cousin, who lives with her parents and sisters, and her kid is raised by a whole family and even the community in general. The second one is a much more reassuring way to raise a kid-less pressure, more eyes and hands on deck.

I am in that same situation. But not super extreme. Just my husband and me but we do.have his siblings around so I'm not super helpless. He works alot and i don't like to ask much from others, it's jut me dealing with 4 little children. I'm bot close to almost all my side of family( very dysfunctional) only my twin brothers who live in colorado and Utah. It gets lonely and i feel so guilty that my children don't get to experience having family around all the time. Lime grandparents feom both sides.

Gothika Rodriguez yea but it can be and often is. Parenting that “take parenting seriously” can present itself in many ways like helicopter parenting, controlling parents, parenting from a place of fear of what happens to your kid outside your home and influence, or fear of them growing up, living vicariously through your kids etc I’m sure there’re other ways I’m not thinking of. So he’s right, balance is essential. It should be taken seriously in the sense that your entirely responsible for the physiological, emotional, and psychological well being and development of another person (or multiple people) besides yourself. How parents choose to execute this responsibility can still be screwed up and can be a by product of “taking it waaay too seriously”. Like the video said it can easily turn into hyper-perfectionist and paranoid parenting that can also ruin the child just like the other end of that spectrum (neglect) would have.

This actually gave me some really interesting insight into my parents. We don't have the best of relationships, but I've learned that they were so fearful about the world (both grew up in poverty and became upper middle class as adults), that they focused all their attention on just making sure I survived. They were never emotionally close or receptive to how I was feeling. My mother in particular was very aggressive towards me, and it took me a long time to realize that she did love me, but she felt like she needed to be hard on me to make sure I would survive. But it's still abusive, and it created a lot of problems that I'm working through as an adult. The irony is that treating your kids this way damages their self-confidence and emotional intelligence, making it even more difficult for them have a successful life in today's world. Fear is part of parenthood I guess, but if you don't manage your fear in a healthy way, you'll end up damaging your kids more than helping them.

I agree about fear being apart of parenting and how some parents allow the fear to over take them. I was heavily sheltered as a child, and led a very restrictive life. Partly due to poverty, but mostly because my family thought they were protecting me. Because of their 'shielding me' I now have to work so much harder to just be on the same level as other adults, and because of this, I feel inadequate, lost, and like I have failed before I have even began, because I don't have the skills and experiences that people my age would have. It's really fucked up how people allow fear to ruin the things they love.

She just wanted to see if Girl had the courage to risk herself because as you mentioned, Mallory is uncertain of Girl's survival because of her naivete. By volunteering Girl knew that she wouldn't make it but her family would survive and when she proves that to Mallory, Mallory is proud of Girl, and then tells them nobody is looking.

To be honest, this is a dumb scene through and through. I mean, its still tense from a character perspective, but plotwise not so much. Having someone look is a BAD idea. Not just because whoever looks dies, but because if anyone looks EVERYONE dies. They establish this fact during the inciting incident of the movie: Once her sister sees, Sandra Bullock has to keep her sister from intentionally steering them into certain death. This establishing of premises and then breaking them in order to create drama is why BB isn't a good movie. IMO, the birds not recognizing Gary is another instance of this, and I can't figure out why Sandra Bullock would attach any significance beyond coincidence to birds chirping in half the instances in which a threat was present. Maybe it makes more sense to those who read the book too?

@@Zambedos i think you've missed some key points in the movie. A. Most individuals walk to their own deaths when they see the monster but a select few become insane and try to kill others. Following this logic, there is about a 75% chance that whoever looks would at least get them through the rapids before killing themselves or others. B. the monster tends to prelude his entrance through birds or wind. Sometimes but not always.

coming here to add that Bird Box came first as a book (highly recommend one of the best thriller/horror books I've read in years) and in the book everyone is killed by Gary leaving Mallory to raise two children completely alone, which explains how harsh she is to Boy and Girl throughout - so while keeping Tom alive is nice for some reprieve (god knows you need it after everything else) it also undermines Mallory's character that developed in the same way as the book despite losing the impetus of being totally alone... so the film is good, but that's really my biggest issue, altering the character's situation without altering her development, which is probably why it doesn't sit right in the film

So I think for him the reason he lived the tiger mom persona is because he did actually grow up in "the big bad cities" of the 80s and 90s and knew my upbringing did not prepare me for those cultures or what makes people successful in them. The tiger mom was the closest he got to opening my eyes to the fact the world is not a hippie commune.

The part that says that they are little adults and have to be self sufficient faster is interesting because Lee was also distant from his daughter because he was upset with her regarding their other child’s death. Malory also treated her “daughter” badly over child like things. Yes, in these situations being childish can get you killed but danger can only make a child mature so much. Both children were expected to be adults and that’s hard for them. Very interesting.

Nice analysis! I haven't seen A Quiet Place yet, but the big takeaway I got from Bird Box was how much Sandra's character doesn't trust the kids. She feels like she has to be their savior and that she can't even allow input from them on who is going to navigate the fork in the river. Both children attempt extreme bravery in being willing to sacrifice their safety, but she denies them both that option of free will. She lords over them because of her fears. Considering the title of your video, I"m surprised you didn't bring this up, since I see modern parenting sharing this same fatal flaw of parents not trusting their children to make their own choices or have a say in their own futures. It's also a theme I notice in superhero films: The hero has to decide for everyone, allowing no input from others. I'm glad that Sandra's character comes to another way of thinking by the end, realizing that mere survival is not the same as truly living. But, other than asking the kids if they want to play, she still hasn't shown that she trusts them to make any real decisions for themselves.

Are you arguing that she should listen to the input of 5/6 year olds about their decision to make choices for themselves that could actually be fatalistic for everyone & calling it "free will"? I don't think that scene was about the kids being brave anyway, I think it was a gun to her head saying who was she willing to sacrifice. Did she love them equally or not? And are you also arguing, that a superhero should hold a brainstorming session with the ppl they're attempting to save, whilst in peril, to make the best decision on how to save them? These questions are rhetorical btw.

Although I understand and agree that Bird Box is not near as good as other thrillers or even A Quiet Place, it spoke to me on a deeeeep level... I’ve always wanted to be a mother but, at times, I’m terrified that my depression, anxiety and inability to connect with people (and feeling like I’m not yet self-sufficient enough) will impede me from being a good mother... the current situation of the world makes me question whether i should even be considering at all! Bird Box actually made me cry several times because just imagining myself in their situation intensified those fears of mine but left me feeling a bit more hopeful... hopeful that, even in this brutal world, I may thrive with a family in the future.

This video is so true but sad to say some parents will always stick to their ways due to various reasons. It's sad but that's the reality we live in. The very people that made this world cutthroat and brutal is because we allowed them to be. We're all made ourselves doormats which we allow bad people walk all over us due to the over-belief of self-esteem.

I hate how Birdbox never addressed the specifics that made people want to force others to see when they saw the monsters. Like, mental illness not as black and white as “crazy and not crazy.” Many disorders are a spectrum. I just found this very lazy storytelling, by adding “why do some people not kill themselves and instead hurt others...they’re criminally insane, or whatever.”

When I read the book, I looked at it from a perspective that, if the entity itself didn't go breaking into people's safe houses and all that to take them, and never seemed to actually reach out and grab people etc for whatever reason, those other people are being affected different in a way they'll hunt down the ones still alive and unreached, and force them to see or just kill them; I imagine it would be the people already inclined to that cruelty that would be affected differently

This video is so much more relevant under COVID-19. With masking, social distancing, travel restrictions, in-house dining restrictions and not to mention so much more bad news coming at us at every minute, children are gonna be deprived of so many experiences, for example, travelling overseas. It becomes a challenge for parents in how to give their kids a complete childhood possible under these circumstances of increasing isolation, restrictions and the world burning itself down

REM Shinigami I think the world hasn’t changed that much if you look at history the world has always been horrifying even more then now. We have medicine and options we didn’t back then It’s just now with out easy access to information there’s so much fear, like child abductions we’re actually higher in the 40-50s it’s just we didn’t have access to news from around the world like we do now, teen pregnancy is also at an all time low as well as child hunger so don’t be to hard on yourself and relax a bit
