Andrew Koutnik, PhD is a researcher studying the influence of nutrition and metabolism on health, disease, and performance. He originally began his research path at Florida State University in the Exercise Science studying the influence of nutrition, exercise, supplementation, and environmental extremes on health-based outcomes in normal and clinical populations. From Florida State University, he transitioned into Biomedical Research where he received his doctorate in Biomedical Sciences with the Metabolic Medicine Lab at University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine with a focus on studying metabolism and metabolic therapies for health, disease, and performance outcomes. Personally, Andrew Koutnik also uses exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle factors to manage Type-1 Diabetes for over 12 years. Type-1 Diabetes has and continues to give an incredible in-depth personal journey into the world of our metabolism, how it works, how day-to-day life (sometimes moment-by-moment choices) influences it, and how these changes on metabolism can have far reaching effects over other aspects of our physiology. This combination of researching nutrition and exercise, but also dealing with its benefits and consequences daily as a Type-1 Diabetic, created a strong appreciation for the metabolic role nutrition and lifestyle can play into disease prevention and management. Andrew is currently involved in ongoing research projects exploring how metabolism influences and is influenced by health, disease, and performance, and how we might leverage lifestyle and medical tools to influences these same categories.

    Thank you so much for this fantastic interview, Iain and Matt. I appreciate Andrew sharing his insights as a person with type 1 diabetes, the mental and metabolic consequences of poor glycemic control, and his expertise in the field of therapeutic carbohydrate restriction. As a registered dietitian and proponent of ketogenic and low carb diets for diabetes, mental health conditions, and metabolic health, I found this discussion extremely valuable. Thanks again!

    I'm back working full time shift work because of low carb, healthy eating, hiit excercise, fasting.....I go for low inflammation, ketones, autophagy....the opposite of the western diet that walks the human body off a cliff and into the arms of pharma.

    Phenomenal interview. Mental health is such an overlooked topic in type type 1 diabetes, and even when it IS addressed, there are few solutions. Normalizing blood sugar makes a dramatic difference in mental health. When blood sugar is high, we are literally peeing away the nutrients needed to make neurotransmitters. Great information Andrew.

    Dr Koutnik makes a great point that our loved ones, when ill, do not have the motivation or energy to research what works. It takes the fierce dedication of family to walk alongside the person with the illness. Dr Campbell,I am looking forward to hearing about the results of your study.     Bipolar disorder has essentially destroyed my life. I would like to start a keto diet as ive tried everything. However it seems complicated. Do you use any devices to track your ketones? Ive read multiple anecdotal stories of people plateauing on keto who then resolved their mental issues on carnivore diet. That diet is even more restrictive though and life is miserable enough with bipolar. Would appreciate if you could point me to some sources on where i can start and make sure my brain starts using ketones please.

    if your in the USA, the best would be to get Dr Chris Palmer MD as your shrink and keto diet expert.. Specially when one does keto for bipolar its best specially in the beginning to track your ketones. And one of the best choices, price wise and accuracy, would be the keto mojo. Even If you would like to do carnivore diet, thats ways more easy once your already used to doing a ketogenic diet. Many that do carnivore did keto for years before. So even if it would have more benefits, as you say it would be too restrictive to start with, or for you right now. One thing for sure one needs a therapeutic classic ketogenic diet, not for weight loss. Many that promote keto promote a high protein diet, while for mental issues , one needs moderate protein. And one can track with keto-mojo when it becomes too much protein. but in general for a male is about 80-100 grams of protein per day and eh 180-200 grams of fat each day. One can relatively easy vut out the carbs from the diet, but I would ease in consuming like 200 grams of fat a day. Slow raising the dose of fat. But right at the start do consume more fat they your normally used to and slowly raise it to 180-200 grams a day. and look up keto flu= add some salt to your water. One also might want to use the salt that has 50-50 sodium chloride and the other half potassium chloride. Its about 1 gram protein per kilo ideal body weight. Another source may be the Charlie Foundation. they have a list of dieticians for the true classic ketogenic diet for epilepsy. and as for Bipolar one needs a keto diet that is the classic diet, as many out there do coaching for keto for weight loss. and not focused on mental health.
