Cyanobacteria are a large group of photosynthetic bacteria that can live freely or in symbiosis with other organisms. Cyanobacteria are also known as blue-green algae. Cyanobacteria can form symbiotic relationships with a wide range of hosts, including plants, fungi, sponges, and protists. For example, Anabaena is a symbiont of the aquatic fern Azolla and can provide biofertilizer to rice plantations. Some cyanobacteria are free-living and fix nitrogen.
