Minnesota resident here. You *do not* require a patty press for a juicy lucy. But, I'm glad you highlighted the correct way to make one. TOO MANY places that sell juicy lucy's (even here) make a thick ball that explodes, causing all the cheese to leak out off of the burger. The realist juicy lucy you can get is at the 5-8 club. It is always done perfect there.

Something about babish and his cookery really ties together with motz and his burgers. Genuinely feel they could stretch America's burger history together

This guy inspires me to be passionate about what you love. I mean, HIS PASSION IS BURGERS. Love this guy.

Matt’s Bar is a small place. You can’t fit too many people in there. If you go at the wrong time, you will wait in line. The menu is simple, but for good reason. They NAIL the Jucy Lucy (proper spelling...sorry 5-8 Club 🤷🏼‍♀️). If you sit at end of the bar, you can actually watch your food being cooked. Having worked at a burger joint myself, I was in awe of the grill cook. He had an entire flattop full of patties and onions and everything else going on, and while he was sweating because of the heat, he made everything LOOK graceful and easy. You leave smelling a little like onion and burger grease, but it’s so worth it. The food and the experience add up to a great time. Their main competition is the 5-8 Club, who stuff the burger with so much cheese that it’s almost overwhelming. But sometimes less is more. I live in neighboring WI, and I head to Matt’s Bar every time I’m in Minneapolis!

I'm from Minnesota and I live in Scotland now. Just this week I found out that Scotland has its own version of the jucy lucy called the "cheeze n burger." Like the jucy lucy, it is two thin patties with cheese in between, but unlike the jucy lucy, it is then dipped in batter and deep fried. The bun is optional, but I like it on a traditional Scottish morning roll. I hate how much I like it.

As a citizen St. Louis Carl's is damn good. The root beer there is off the hook as well. Another hidden gem of a burger place in St. Louis is Busloop Burgers. Highly recommend.

Dude, this is at least the 19th time I've watched this video in the past year and I somehow haven't gotten tired of it

There's a place in Tempe, AZ called The Chuckbox who does a neat variant of that Jucy Lucy with grilled green chiles that they call a Tijuana Torpedo. A great regional variation on an already regional burger

I'm always confused by so-called burger purists insisting that ketchup doesn't belong on a burger because it masks the flavor of the meat and then turning around and putting pickles, raw onions, and mustard, three of the sharpest and most overbearing ingredients I can think of, on the burger.

I agree! I don’t understand “purists”, get over yourselves. If everyone stuck to doing things the same way there would be no variety, no regional flavor, no unique greasy spoons. Innovation is key, preference is too.

A small amount of ketchup spread on the bottom bun is the primo choice placement for not overpowering the burger but still getting a nice smack of ketchup flavor

George Motz is so fantastic. If he had his own show I'd watch it.

Part of what made Matt's Juicy Lucy taste amazing to me was standing in a line out in the cold, finally getting inside only to be accosted by the smell and heat of the grill for another 15-20 minutes before you get to order. So after 30 minutes of smelling this thing it's like the burger gods answering your prayers. Maybe it was just really busy that day, but it made the burger better. Matt's for the pub burger, 5/8 club for a diner version and Blue Door Pub for the best dressed Lucy's in town.

I always order crispy hash browns to put in my burger when I can. Had a Cuban who was a grill cook with me and talked me into putting hashbrows casserole on my burger. And now I can't eat burgers without them

Alvin does not know how to host. He seems uncomfortable and self conscious around a lot of the guests.

When I was in college in Athens, GA, there was a place called Stuffed Burger that took that Jucy Lucy idea and ran with it. Not just cheese, but onio0n, mushroom, jalapeno, various kinds of cheese... They were my go-to burger until my senior year when they closed and I havent have anything like ti since.

I never thought I needed this until now. This is having me crave burgers at 8 am and that’s perfectly okay with me

So can we just get Babish and George hosting this show from now on?

Central Illinois over here and I have two and a half words- Steak N Shake. Smash burgers and shakes can’t go wrong unless you go through the drive thru.

Fell in love with the Cuban sandwich while living in Florida. Haven't found one close to what I had there since moving away

@@katoweltmer7476 Honest mistake, but Jed speaks the truth. 5-8 and Matt's have a long-running "feud" about who truly has the original Juicy Lucy, but I think once you can make it to Matt's, you'll know for yourself who truly started it.

Haha! What a fun food video! Babish is so chill and Alvin just be rollin on up to the plate offering his style too. No haters in the room, just three dudes looking at interesting burger types and flavors. Props to the video editor, love the graphics in this, they put in some work on it. I have a friend from the ChiTown area, will be on lookout for a lacy burger if we do a road trip again. Peace now, yall.

Minnesota Lad here! Great to see that hometown burger!!

That lacy edge burger is what Freddy's Frozen Custard serves and the way they make them is an art in it of itself.

Are we going to see Andrew Rea on Hot Ones anytime soon? I'd love to see a few more popular chefs appear on the show.
