Binging with Babish: Brock's Onigiri from Pokémon
Ойын-сауық
Okay, it's April 2nd, fun's over. This week, for reals this time, we're making onigiri: the breakfasty-lunchy-snack, ubiquitous in Japan, and virtually unheard of here in the US. As such, some committee of suits saw fit to Americanize their portrayal on Pokémon, and a generation of these United States grew up thinking they were donuts...and the bastards made ten hundred billion dollars. Was it worth it, 4Kids Entertainment? Oh, it was? No yeah you're right.

As a Japanese person, I've never eaten or ever seen onigiri being made with sushi rice. It's made with just regular plain white rice with no flavoring/seasoning to the rice itself.
@paranoidhumanoid
3 жыл бұрын
I know! That's also why it kept falling apart! It should just be plain boiled rice and salt (optional) + filling. I screamed in horror when I saw him pour the sushi-su onto the rice! 😂😂😂

I think the rice people use in the west is different from Japanese rice, so he just said sushi rice. Like our rice doesn’t stick at all, there’s no way we’d be able to form balls like that with it.

@@myewzek2913 If you add sushi vinegar it won't stick for sure! Have to use short grain rice from Japan or California. Sushi vinegar is never used in onigiri - it's not sushi!!!

@@paranoidhumanoid Unfortunately California’s pretty rich in Asian products. You don’t typically find a lot of regular Japanese rice in a lot of American (his target audience) states. In fact, if we narrow it down a little further, it’s difficult to find different types of rice in the east coast where he lives. So we have to settle for sushi rice nonetheless because Southeast Asian rice won’t stick, with or without vinegar. Hopefully Asian stores can provide more products in the future. (That is unless you lived around this area too and know where to find the right rice? My local Asian stores don’t have much, help would be appreciated :( )
@paranoidhumanoid
3 жыл бұрын
@@atinytrashcan6755 Regular Japanese rice and sweet rice can be found typically at most Asian grocery stores and definitely at chains like Mitsuwa. On the East Coast, particularly in the NY/NJ metro area (where Babish resides in a city with a large Japanese population), there are dozens of Japanese owned groceries including Mitsuwa, Daido, Dainobu, Sunrise Mart, Family Mart, Katagiri, etc. and many Chinese and Korean stores also carry the typical brands like Nishiki and Kokuho, Haru, Homare, and Kagayaki. 3 Walmart locations closest to me near Philly also carry Kokuho and Nishiki here on the East Coast (10 and 15lb bags). Walmart even carries the nori seaweed sheets and Pocky sticks!
And you're telling me that Brock was just casually carrying a pressure cooker around in his backpack?

This video is a year old but still, here's a tip: instead of applying rice in two parts and squishing together, make a ball of rice and make an indent with your thumb, then add your filling and fold the rice over to close the rice ball back up.

I always forget Pokémon was an Anime in Japanese. Honestly as a kid I have never seen it in original dub, because my cousin always watched English dub.

We use plain rice for Onigiri. Add vinegar only for Sushi ^^

Like the ume and seweed is already salty, why are you adding vinegar. also i wanted to reach through the screen and show him how to make the perfect triangles (they weren't bad for a first attempt but it looked like he was struggling and i felt bad)

In Japan. We don’t season rice for onigiri by vinegar or so on. We cover onigiri by a pinch of salt. Nice contents anyway.

Ah the jelly donuts. XD Even as a little kid I thought Brock was extra-strange because those were clearly triangles of rice! But then, it was the era where everything up to and including theme songs were dubbed.
Tuna and salmon are my favorite onigiri filling! The savory-ness mixes perfectly with the rice!

Nostalgia hits hard
no rice vinegar needed. just some moistened/damp hands with some salt and you are good to form the triangles. you may have had difficulty with the shaping due to the vinegared rice.
I think we need a basics on “munchies,” of course preceded by a couple of jazz cigarettes 😂

Omg nostalgia! My brother and I were able to convince a sushi chef to make a salmon version of this for us by bringing in a magazine of Brock, Misty and Ash eating on the riverbank together. The chefs thought we were crazy, maybe because it was like poor people food but they had to sell it for like 12 bucks a pop? Over the next 5 years (we were poor) we ate there once a year, the chefs felt bad and would make it for free or a discount. They called us the Pokémon kids when we came in. Both my brother and I ended up working at sushi restaurants for a long time as young adults, partly due to how welcoming those people were, and how much we glorified Sushi culture as middle class kids near Dallas. ...why is the world so horrid now Babish? Will we get through 2020 to all eat rice balls together on the riverbank?
