BIMHUIS TV | Tom Harrell: Infinity

Музыка

Tom Harrell trumpet, Mark Turner tenor sax, Charles Altura guitar, Ugonna Okegwa doublebass, Johnathan Blake drums
Trumpeter Tom Harrell has rightly been called ‘living and breathing melody.’ In his current quintet he plays with New York greats including tenor saxophonist Mark Turner.
For those in the know he’s an icon and for new listeners a revelation: Tom Harrell’s trumpet sound is among the most beautiful and sophisticated ever. His precision and sense of harmony are unparalleled and his solos sound like thoughtfully composed lines. Furthermore, he keeps on innovating. For example, Infinity is his first album with a quintet with tenor sax and guitar. At the BIMHUIS he will perform with the same musicians, including tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, who has previously played sold-out shows here with Fly.
Tom Harrell has won many awards as a trumpet and flugelhorn player, and he has also earned his place as a composer. He has written and arranged for jazz bands as well as ballet, symphony and chamber orchestras. His arrangements include classical works by Debussy and Ravel. He has collaborated with legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans and Horace Silver, with diva’s such as Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson, and with heroes of the current jazz generation such as Esperanza Spalding and Ambrose Akinmusire.
‘A supreme trumpet/flugelhorn player, Tom Harrell has an endless flow of bubbling, intricate
ideas conveyed with an almost serene delivery. His equal ability as a formidable post-bop
composer remains in full flower. From dangerous tearups to near abstract to conventional balladry, Harrell is a master’ (Mojo Magazine).

Bought Infinity on CD with almost the same setting a couple of years ago. Really enjoyed and listened to it a lot. So glad to hear this! Tom was a dear friend to Bob Berg since their days with Horace Silver. I met and played with Bob. He told me about Tom and his genious. Tom has been my favourite trumpeter for many decades.

Harrell habita otro mundo, y no tan solo el de su diagnostico de esquizofrenia, u otra forma de entender (o no entender) el mundo. Como sea; ello lo transmuta en música increíble!

How appearences can be deceiving.. It was not my style at all, a bit dull at first.. But getting along with it, it opened a complete new universe for me. All Top musicians on adventurous compositions. Surprise for me was the role of the guitarist Charles Altura. Dull at first for me, although he was obviously 'good'. (I am not a Jim Hall fan). But wondering where 'the mood' of al tunes came from, I realised it was him. Very modest, creating a continuum for all further dreams and thoughts, never disturbing anything, while his playing was always opening new ways. (for more beauty to come out). Truely amazing, and very worthwhile. Modesty at it's best, for me. The bassist had a very good timing on everything. The role of that is underrated.. This is an amazing team.

The first tune is reminiscent of an early 60's Paul Horn quintet tune called Mirage for Miles.

too bad that every now and then both the trumpet and the flugelhorn the sound gets lost or distant due to the suboptimal positioning of the microphone all that was needed was for the sound engineer during the concert (in a discreet manner) moved it closer to the bell of Harrell's instruments, depending on how he positioned himself. (given the objective neck posture problems of this great artist).
