BIMHUIS TV Presents: Melissa Aldana Quartet

Музыка

American star on tenor saxophone celebrates her debut on the legendary Blue Note label.
Melissa Aldana tenor sax, Lage Lund guitar, Pablo Menares bass, Kush Abadey drums
Melissa Aldana has overcome many challenges. As a young talent she moved from her native Chile to New York. In 2014 she won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. In the following years, her powerful, melodic style often incited comparisons to tenor saxophone greats such as Sonny Rollins and James Carter. Challenges and triumphs from recent years inspired her album 12 Stars.
12 Stars was shaped according to the symbols of tarot. During lockdown, Melissa Aldana took the time to study this mystical card game. For the recording of the album, she worked with a stellar cast of musicians from New York. Part of them also perform in het current quartet, for example guitarist Lage Lund, who played here with his own group. 12 Stars appeared on the famous jazz label Blue Note, which was founded in 1939.

She plays interesting jazz well, yes, but it's very clear that she doesn't rock.

"short one" tune was so meandrous, just like a tired river finally arriving at its destiny, spilling on a wide, colourful delta.

Where is the 'oompf'? Is jazz these days chamber music? As an audience I want to drink beer, shout and get high. Those were the days in the Bimhuis.

I prefer jazz as chamber music 😊 So many great young composers these days. Times are changing, even in jazz...

@@kevave54 I agree, but perhaps we should call this music by a different name. I propose 'woke jazz'. Then people will know what level of sophistication/social training is expected for real appreciation. One of the features of woke jazz is the feeble/weak blowing of the saxophone, quite the opposite of i.e. Dexter Gordon.

Lol are you not just describing smooth jazz? It truly could not have less to do with the American political agenda. Though I do get that you're probably joking.

@@corner1333 I'm refering to the element of absurd sophistication which is being sought after. Smooth Jazz is for easy listening, aka elevator music, probably the opposite of what is performed here.

@@robertgerard7055or like, just check out the artist before you go see them live. Unless you’re complaining about a wasted 30 seconds watching KZread on the couch. If that’s the issue, I’m not sure anything will solve it for you lol
