BIMHUIS TV Presents: AARON PARKS QUARTET

Музыка

New band led by American pianist known from his albums on Blue Note and ECM.
Ben Solomon tenor saxophone, Aaron Parks piano, Kanoa Mendenhall bass, RJ Miller drums
With his new quartet, Aaron Parks returns to an acoustic format, after years of primarily touring with his genre-bending band Little Big. ‘There’s a book of unrecorded compositions of mine that I’ve been working on for some years now but have rarely performed outside of New York,’ he writes. ‘Music with something of a richer harmonic color palette, with rhythms ranging from the swinging to the meditative, and a lot of freedom to communicate and really improvise together as a band.’ He will perform this work together with Ben Solomon on tenor saxophone, Kanoa Mendenhall on bass, and RJ Miller on drums.
Aaron Parks made a lasting impression with his Blue Note debut Invisible Cinema at the age of 25, following three Blue Note releases with trumpeter Terence Blanchard. After that, the New York-based pianist and composer released many more albums, including two on ECM Records: a solo piano recording and a trio record featuring Billy Hart and Ben Street. Aaron Parks is also one of the founding members of James Farm, the jazz supergroup featuring star saxophonist Joshua Redman.
Recording Philip ten Brink, Video Micha de Kanter, Lights Misha Pipercic, Stage Sound Onno Prillwitz

Playing in Aaron Parks' band brought out an interesting side of Ben Solomon. Normally, he has this somewhat more aggressive and 'gritty' (in a good way) sound, which is pretty cool. However, when playing with Mr. Parks, Ben sounded more polished and 'clean,' yet still maintained his exploratory nature. His ideas are easier to grasp despite their high complexity. It's really a matter of organization. I really enjoyed this version of Ben Solomon!

I really like this pianist. But the contemporary era will never do better than Keith Jarrett. In the years when Jarrett played with his quartets (USA or European), there was a lot more risk-taking on the part of the musicians. The space was “open”. And it was new. Keith Jarret has created something new in his quartets. At some point in history novelty becomes impossible. It's the tragedy of being born too late for very good contemporary musicians.

@kailashmehta8671 that is an artifact of the original livestream, where the video was live for people to join but the concert had not yet started, so they fill the time with that display. it has since been edited out of the replay video.
