BILTMORE ESTATE Conservatory Tour - Ep. 371

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Ten years ago I got to visit ‪@Biltmore‬ for the first time-and the conservatory in particular left SUCH an impression on me, as I felt it was one of the most beautiful conservatories I had ever laid eyes on. I met up with Todd Roy, Conservatory Horticulturist, before the opening so that we could give you a full-fledged tour (minus the orchid house, which will be for another episode). Todd's background is in both art and horticulture, which he uses to create artistic (and lush!) displays throughout.
We will tour the historic outdoor gardens as well, which will be shown on our sister channel ‪@FlockFingerLakes‬ -so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Ylang-ylang tree, we used to have several of those trees in our backyard back in the 60s. Huge trees. My grandfather gave those trees to his daughters and daughter in law, my mom. The flowers were being sold since time immemorial here in the Philippines because it is used as a garland strewn together with arabian jasmine and those leis are used for religious purposes. How ever much ylang ylang flowers were sold, the proceed goes to whose daughter owns the tree that the flowers were harvested from. It's a very fragrant flower and our town used to be filled with them. There was a saying then that you know you're already in San Pedro if the wind smells like Ylang-ylang.

@@WaterspoutsOfTheDeep it's an elegant floral scent like an old world feminine scent. Eveytime I get a hold of this flower which is rare now in some places, it hits me with strong nostalgic memories of childhood. There is something about a scent thay stirs the memories long forgotten.

I can't believe how amazing Todd is. He knows every detail about every plant. Also I like the fact that he is not only knowledgeable about plants but he also enjoys the design aspect of it. Thank you Todd and Summer. 🙏PS. I think at 08.42 the plant on the floor is not a selloum but a xanadu (Thaumatophyllum xanadu). 08.53 is selloum I guess.

I was so happy to see this video! Finally a tour that is in my neck of the woods. Visit Asheville at least once a year and usually in Mar/Apr But did go once about End of Apr but the weather has not cooperated! So the green houses were always closed. Only once did they have some plants outside to buy. I bought my first and only lace leaf japanese maple tree from there. It now lives in my front yard & is about 6 ft tall. (I need to start training/shaping it) This year we are going at the end of June so I hope get inside this time! Thank you for visiting and Im off to watch the orchid video!

Absolutely spectacular! I like the idea of keeping the plants in pots, and just arranging or putting everything together to bring fullness in a garden. It would be good to put in a spot among perennials for a pop of color, without taking up a lot of room. I may try that with annuals this year in my garden. Thank you, Summer and Todd for the lovely tour!

6:02 Bromeliads are great... But I think some of the mangave varieties give them a run for their money. I use mangave in sinilar ways, and I don't have to worry about watering, or even providing them with light. I have dozens of pups sitting in my basement, on a pallet shelf, and I bring them up, pot them up, water them, and they carry on! I implore the Biltmore to at least add mangave into their bromeliad setups!
