Lyrics:
If you search for tenderness
It isn't hard to find
You can have the love you need to live
But if you look for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind
It always seems to be so hard to give
Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you
Billy Joel's official KZread channel features music videos, live performances, interviews, TV appearances and more. That time I was a regular schoolgirl of the Special (as it's called) English school in the Soviet Union! Since I studied English from my childhood, I constantly listened to songs in English, to hear the real language and to learn more English words (not only the words that related to the lessons' topics about Lenin, about the capital of the Great Britain, about the political world and so on...) And the visit of Billy Joel to the USSR was a great event! And Honesty was the first song that really hooked me) So deep, so sincerely, so honestly!.. Appreciate it very much! ❤️

Wow! I cannot believe it. I was watching this program live from Vietnam in 1987. It was the Bridge program that one of the first American artists ever perform live in the USSR. We were lucky to have one of the first color television in my whole neighborhood. And this program was broadcasted to the Soviet Union embassy in Ha Noi, which was not far from my home. That was the first time I heard/saw Billy Joel and I got hooked ever since. This song was amongst my favorites, besides Piano Man, Uptown Girl, Allen Town, ... I still revisit this song once in a while now and then and to my surprise running into this very version that I saw 33 years ago. I'm still waiting for a chance to see the man perform live. Please come to LA, Mr. Billy Joel!!!!!

I think that's down to 50 years of pop music basically running its course and being exhausted. Just like Billy Joel had an incredible string of hits until about 1980, and then his music got worse and worse. He ran out of good ideas and one day, he was finished. At least he knew enough to get out of songwriting, unlike Paul McCartney. Billy Joel started to suck around the time of Tell Her About It/Uptown Girl/The Longest Time in 1983.

He is in fine voice in this one- maybe the best I've heard his voice sound. He reflects the influence of one of his musical inspirations, Ray Charles, but them flips from blues into angelic clarity. The long open vowel and breath control on the word honesty is epic! Chills. And to think he was playing in iron curtain Russia! Music blasts barriers.

2:38 into the song is just wow beautiful and touches me me in ways I can't describe. He can do so much with his voice and paints so many different colors and tones with his voice, so many different emotions, absolutely beautiful

In my graduate student days, when I stayed shortly in Berkeley joining an international summer law school, I drank a beer and sang this song with my friends. Wish the U.S. universities be again filled with many international students. I studied in Bloomington, IN, in 1994.
