Billy Gibbons Style ( ZZ Top ) - Guitar Lesson

Here you can get some insight in the guitar style of Billy Gibbons ( ZZ Top ). I am taking the song " Sharp Dressed Man " under the lens but also include things which I check from other songs like " Gimme all your loving " " La Grange ". Billy has a great bluesy and orchestral sound which makes this signature sound of ZZ Top in the classic trio formation with Drum, Bass and Guitar. I focus mainly how to create such a sound and how you can become creative yourself by adapting Billy's playing technique.

    Never played guitar in my life. I have boughten several, lol. I’m always amazed at not only the skill in the finger work but the ear. I play great air guitar. Sounds like the real thing🤪. I’m very jealous….Oh man , the women I’d have following me. . I’d be the American pied piper of Hamelin . Anyway I do not play but I love music , I love learning and I love the easiness in your voice so I will subscribe and watch! Well done and thank you . Sometimes you watch a video and think “there’s part of my life I’ll never get back” this is Not one of those videos. Awesome skills

    Even Mark Knopfler was looking for that sound for the Money for Nothing riff. It's such a rich greedy sound.

    I had to watch twice before i understood you were saying "the let-ring effect." I thought you were trying to say "layering effect," lol. I understand what you're saying, what you're emphasizing, but maybe we need to come up with a better name? "Sustained bass notes" maybe? IDK. Great licks! Good sound! 👍 👌

    Great job! Long before the roto sound that's almost disco in a good way there was the lil ol band from Texas. A smokey gritty dust yourself off from a trail ride as you swagger the into the border cantina kind of sound. Tough music for tough guys who need to blow off steam after a hard day's work. Even though the sound became more urban they never compromised the attitude and swagger. One of my favorite bands of all time.

    Hey Jeff, thanks - thats exactly how the old sound soundes like.I did not like the newer disco stuff so much - but it still was ZZ Top.

    Hi HP, have a question, when you play the doubles stops in the C chord at fret 8, what's happens with the E note? That's part of the C chord also? The double stop riff is being played as if it's in C minor? Thanks

  • @Hpcrazy

    @Hpcrazy

    Hey Rajesh, you hold the low E-string if played as long as possible. Thats the hard part of Billy Gibbons playing style.

    @@Hpcrazy Hi HP, Thankyou for your reply, sorry for any confusion but I was actually referring to why isn't the E note on the G string fret 9 not being played in the pentatonic when it should be as song is in C major key? As you know in music theory if it's C major key then the pentatonic is either C major or A minor pentatonic. But what's actually happening in this song is that even though its in the key of C major the pentatonic that is used in this song is C minor pentatonic that's my point and it seems to work lol! Thankyou

    @@rajeshgumber363 I see - yes in the solo of Sharp Dressed Man he is in fact using the E together with the G as double stop. So he is seing the C as a blues C7 chord which works as you already found out.

    Just curious... Does HP Crazy have any relation to "HP Indicates G-Force Automatic Tuners" as referenced to Gibson Les Paul models. Got that from Reverb. In some respects the instrument or it's condition is of little consequence but since I can't play mine anyway, I kinda obsess over trivia like that. Thanks for what you do for us! Rock on! 🤓

    Hey John, a student of mine once had that automatic tuner on a Les Paul - it works but it's not such a relilable system as one might think. My student removed it after a few months.

    Gibbons barely moves his left hand. He stays put on the fretboard. You can play all that lower on the fretboard.

    Ironic and sad timing to this nice lesson, HP. I'd imagine ZZ Top will continue as I've learned another bassist has been filling in for Dusty Hill recently but it won't be the same Texas band! Jim C.
