Billy Eichner - Northwestern University 2024 SoC Convocation Speech
This is part of the speech I gave at the graduation at Northwestern University a few weeks ago. I was really fortunate to study theater at Northwestern and being asked to give the speech was a huge honor and very meaningful to me. (The “Shanley” referenced in the speech is a small black box-style theater there where the students put on shows). This is not something I ever planned on posting publicly - it was written very specifically for the graduates of the School of Communication there, where I graduated 25 years ago - and where many of the students are seeking out careers in the arts and the media. And this video is an eternity by social media standards so I don’t really expect a lot of people to watch it. But the people who’ve seen it or found it online seem to be getting something good out of it so, for what it’s worth, I thought I’d post it here too, for anyone who might find it helpful. This is for all the recent graduates out there, at Northwestern and everywhere else (and maybe also for those of us middle aged folks trying to figure out our next chapter too). Huge congrats to all the graduates and thanks again to my friends at Northwestern for having me. 💜

Excellent advice. I know how you’ve felt those times! Also, Bros was great, I came out of covid seclusion back to the theater for the first time for Bros, and I loved every minute.

I'm glad you posted your speech for others to hear. I was in the stadium when you gave it, my niece was a graduate, and as an older actor in Chicago you gave fantastic advice that even performing artists my age can benefit from. Thank you, Billy!

This was really inspiring 💜 And you’re so right about how the traditional route is not for everyone, ESPECIALLY in the entertainment industry. It cannot be overemphasized how important it is to take control of your own destiny, putting in the work yourself, bc in youth it’s so hard to conceptualize how things will come together for you in the future, but the unfortunate thing is that things don’t simply come together for 95% of people, you have to physically put them together yourself! There’s no ~magic agent~ that puts in the work for you, preparing a straight-forward series of steps to living your dream life. You have to figure out the steps, you have to do the steps, and sometimes you don’t put in the right steps, and sometimes the steps are right but it’s not the right time. It’s frustrating, it’s SO frustrating to not just achieve the first step and then cruise while the path builds itself before you. But you gotta do it or else you get nowhere. While it sucks that you have to put the steps together yourself, they DO all come together. You WILL turn out okay :) The best time to start was yesterday, but the second best time is now!!!

I found Billy on The Street in 06-07 when I was on college, on the early days of KZread, and immediately thought it was the funniest man on the street segment ever. He came up with a shtick, perfected it, and ran with it. Kudos.
