Billy Cobham | Live at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley
Музыка
Billy Cobham still carries thunder in his drumsticks. The 78-year-old legend of the jazz fusion era brought his Crosswinds Project to Seattle's Jazz Alley, honoring the drummer's landmark 1974 album Crosswinds. In an exclusive session for KNKX Cobham showed he can command a storm and also romance with a sweet breeze.
Leading a quartet with guitarist Mark Whitfield, bassist Tim Landers and keyboard player Scott Tibbs through three of his classic compositions, the veteran drummer lit a rhythmic fire under his bandmates. Landers' steady hand and expressive playing from Whitfield and Tibbs were thrilling, but each song found Cobham's drumming never far from the spotlight.
Cobham was generous with his time, spending nearly a half hour talking with KNKX jazz host Abe Beeson about his long and impressive career. He spoke fondly of his youth in New York City and his time playing jazz in the military in the late '60s. Cobham shared his surprise at first learning his debut album Spectrum has gone to #1 on the charts in 1973 and spoke about the development of hard-rocking jazz fusion drums.
There's humility there, too. When asked if he felt like a big influence on drummers from jazz to progressive rock, Cobham referred to himself as a "student of the art that shares ideas." KNKX is proud to share some fascinating ideas from his Crosswinds Project at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley.

Billy's 1985 Tama Superstars with a custom paint job look and sound amazing, he recently received them from back from the previous owner and is using them on this Crosswinds Tour.

Every time Billy comes to Buffalo, i never miss him. He is Billy "The Great" Cobham
Nobody plays tighter than Jazz Fusion bands!!! Been a fan of Billy Cobham and all jazz fusion since Christmas 1973 when I received the "Spectrum" album! I can't even begin to imagine how many times I've played that album, and his others, over the years. "Spectrum opened my eyes and ears to so many fine, excellent musicians over the years. I especially like the work he's done lately collaborating with the Nicolosi Productions /Novecento " "Drum and Voice" albums 1, 2, 3, and 4.
It's great to see he's still doing what he loves doing. I'll make sure to go see him perform every chance I can.
the man the myth the LEGEND
I saw Billy Cobham performing a drum clinic back in the early 1980’s. He is a nice down to earth man, and of course a phenomenal musician 🥁
Sempre grande!
Billy is the best
Better views of band not like last sight I seen didn't know this was Billy's old drum set refurbished great band billy plays like he did in his youth incredible
It was an awesome show! Fantastic venue and phenomenal musicians all around. I mean....It Is Billy Cobham, the powerhouse.
I 1st saw Bill C when I was about 6 yrs old on the Atlantic City Boardwalk back in the late 60's with my dad. He was playing in a band called DREAMS with the Breaker Bros. Followed the guy all thru my school days. He is still playing and making great music.
Billy, amazing drummer¡ I have the opportunity to attend one of his clinics around 1994, one of the most inspiring, memorable and best days about music, Thank so much!! Billy for that opportunity, I keep one drum head autograph from you in my drumkit
I got to see these guys live a few months ago, fantastic music and a memorable show.
alls i can say is still incredibly fast and great thank you for all your instruction and talent you have given us for over 60 years god bless
Billy sounds so amazing over 50 years after his career took off playing a standard bop kit leading left hand. I just love the guy and you know he’s a humble cat! What’s better than that?
How am I only just learning about Billy Cobham? Legend. I am so glad to have enjoyed this.
My first jingle date in nyc had tim landers on bass ..page was black with notes ..he killed it 😆
78 and still performing! Met him in '73 or '74 when he played Southampton College of LIU and I was working for the campus radio station. Awesome muscular arms, limitless stamina, a Jazz innovator like no other. Still have his first several albums on vinyl, treasured heirlooms now.
El mejor. The best. Only other thing that puts a smile on my face is my grandson.
Thank you for posting AND including the Pleasant Pheasant ! First B.C. tune I ever heard when I was a kid and it hooked me for life - Mark W. is Killing and the Band is Smokin' - Long Live The King 👑🥁🐂

Ive been diggin' Billy too since the 70s and over the years I found that every drummer I've heard from beginner to pro, .. EVERY drummer will play SOMETHING in some way that I've heard him do or will remind me of some thing he's done. That ALONE is undeniable and proves the power of his influence in music. ALL music. Mah MAN! L.

Had pull out my Warning album when I saw this. Those drums are awesome
Great playing, love BC's feel and groove. He just seems to keep getting better and better. I wonder if the contrasting hairstyles are deliberate - between them they end up with an average of 2 short back and sides!
Saw him play that kit at the Chestnut Caberet in Philadelphia around 86-87

@@knkx good to know. thank you.
The camera should predominantly focus on Bill Cobham(99%). . He is the star and most of us want to see his playing, and we don't gain anything from watching the other musicians pressing on frets or keys and making faces.
Keyboard is channeling Chick on Pleasant Pheasant
Every keyboard player seems to struggle through it. Nervewracking gig.

@@borgullet3376 Don't take it personally. I grew up listening to Cobham and Spectrum is great with Jan Hammer, but the synth sounds are shitty on this. Jan Hammer used better sounds in the 70's. It's now 2022. There is no reason to use bad synth brass and pad sounds. Hope that explains my comment a little better.
