He was suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis which ended his cricket career. So in umpiring he was forced to make finger like this due to his disease. Nothing funny in that

Very few know that Billy suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and that was the reason he would give out by his finger curved as it was too painful for him to straighten his finger. He was in pain all those times yet made us laugh with all his gestures. Salute to a legend.

Billy Bowden and David Shepherd are my all time favourites. “The crooked finger of doom”

Loved Billy from the first test I saw him in. Brought in great humour and eccentricity but was a quality umpire. Maybe not as good as Taufel but as good as anyone around now. Btw his signal for a run out referral has to be seen to be believed.

I m from India n I m just watching cricket videos this evening n hv happened to watch this video. Respects to Mr. Billy. He was not only a nice umpire but also a lovable person who would give that extra joy to audience. It was always nice to watch him umpiring. Doing fun while being respectable is not an easy task I believe. Much respects!! Hez from NZ, right? No wonder; they earn respect n likability with birth I guess. One of the nicest ppl on earth🙂. They r such gentlemen like even if we lose a final against them, I feel like it’s ok it’s NZ who won. And, until seeing a comment below, I didn’t know that he had RA. Hope, hez coping well with it. His trouble was that he tried to make the game more about Billy Bowden than the players and the teams. In the end his silly signs for 4 and 6 got on to many inportant peoples nerves in the game. I thought he was just a Buffon or a Village idiot.
