Instead of stopping the boats 101% by letting them apply only outside of eu we reward the strong, ruthless ones that will step on a baby to get over the border. Ofc we only get young men bc they are the only ones that make the trip. Its barbaric to call that humane tbh. Acceptance among the host societies would be much higher with a centralized procedure, identification and integration programme for all member states. I understand a moroccan that comes to germany bc he aint got shit over there and thinks money is easy here. We however have the right to know who comes to us and to expel guests that piss on our carpet so to say. If there are colonial ties like in france, modern colonial ties - not ones from 1150 AC, i understand why one could argue for sort of free movement between these societies. I agree with your Mount Everest take. Being a mountain climber myself it is disheartening to see what happens year after year on that mountain. Not to mention all the Sherpas and guides who die trying to rescue and guide the rich "Adventurer's" up the mountain. Everest needs to be reserved for the best climbers. I see the similarities with the Titanic story, it is a dive site best left to the best submarine divers in the world, not tourists.

A mixture of their adventurism, defiance, ignorance and neglect on the part of OceanGate lead to this. It's unfortunate. It's a bit absurd to cast each person as a villain though. Do you know what their businesses were involved in? How people working for them are treated? What their personal views are? The true scope of their humanity? I see a lot of people jumping to conclusions and painting with broad strokes. I guess I just expect a little more nuance. I don't know a lot about research subs, but Titan looks like something a sub enthusiast builds in his backyard to play "submarine" - it boggles my mind that the CEO deluded himself into thinking his approach was safe and then convinced all those people of the same thing. If you need a sub that's capable of doing this trip thousands of times safely, look up the DSV Alvin - there's a reason it doesn't look ANYTHING like Titan, but OceanGate could've built something similar for ~$50 million. At $250,000 per seat and seeking breakeven on sub cost after 5 years, they'd only have to sell 200 tickets, which is like 50 dives or 10 dives per year. There's room for safety AND greed.
I guess they went down to look at the remains of the Titanic to see if the band was still playing.
None of the search efforts will come from the billionaires' wealth. But, if I pass out at work and a coworker calls an ambulance, I have to pay thousands.
I really don't think it's a good point to say that the company that just killed 4 of it's customers because of cutting corners is somehow revolutionary because they did it for super cheap.
