A storm was coming so we knew we didn’t have much time. Luckily, the first raindrops fell as Bill Ryder-Jones was putting his guitar back in its case. Eight years ago, we had filmed a Take Away Show with him in an alleyway and the Paris wind had already played its part. We gathered the same team behind the camera and the magic happened once again. 'You've got to get outside, go get some sun / Got to get yourself together because this can't go on'. The gap between Bill's apparent nonchalance and his profound and moving lyrics is as fascinating as ever. The song he played us is a dark yet hopeful one. And its timeless melancholy is even more vivid when stripped down of its orchestral ascension. If you get the impression that Bill is sharing intimacies directly to your ear, just know that you’re not alone!

Bill Ryder Jones is a dude in my opinion ... this song is raw yet really emotive... Bill mixes in good circles too producing the last two albums by the brilliant Michael Head and the Red elastic band... his latest record is a masterpiece too..Top musician and Producer 👌🙏

My best guess is 1 lav mic inside the guitar, 1 in the collar of Bill's fleece for his voice and another mic in the carpark/on top of the camera to get the natural reverb. The last one is faded out as they go outside and up to the roof, maybe it comes back when the song's finished (if camera mounted). Lots of izotope RX in post to remove wind noise.

@@CharlieElwess Hello. This setup is pretty simple: 2 lavs, one in the guitar, one in the collar of the sweater. I'm also using a stereo boom mic and following the camera along: this is the mic that is picking up the natural reverb of the parking in the first half of the film. Although it was very windy, the Rycote windshield did a great job at negating any wind in the boom. I even had to increase the volume to pick up a bit of wind noise when you see Bill with big gushes of wind in his hair. Otherwise, unlike the first Take Away Show we did with him 8 years ago, it was very very silent up there and not a single tree or leaf to rustle with the air passing through. We do use Izotope RX a lot in post production for these type of films. But for this one, the takes were super clean and I didn't need to. Hope this answers your questions.
