As a trombone player with 55 years playing experience I can categorically say the he is not just one of the best players you have never heard of but one of the best players EVER! His tone, his security of production, his interpretation and style are sublime. I now have two fave players, Urbie Green for his melodic style and jazz style and Bill Pearce for his melodic perfection.

Bill Pearce was my great uncle. I didn't know him too well, I only met him 2 or 3 times in my life, but stories I've heard of him and his trombone playing are iconic in my family. He died just after I turned fourteen, and my grandpa (Bill's older brother, Rowan) spoke of him all the time until he died in January. Uncle Bill is a huge influence to me and the rest of my family.

Mr. Pearce, through "Night Sounds" and his beautiful music gave me hope in my darkest times. The "Holy Spirt" was upon him and I hope to someday thank him personally, in Heaven, where he has found the eternal peace and happiness he always talked to us about. As a retired band director I agree he is one of the best ever. If you like Trombone then you all should definitely check out the Salvation Armies “Spiritual to the Bone” albums. “INCREDIBLE” When I was in college my father had a stroke. Bill Pearce did a concert one Sunday evening at our church. When Bill heard my dad was ill and wanted so much to hear him in concert he came to our home after the concert and did a mini concert for my father. My dad called me and told me about it. Now that is what a “REAL” believer does. I have never forgot that.

In Chicago in the 1950's, Bill Pearce also sang with Dick Anthony, the 16 Singing Men & the Melody Four + the HiC Choral, directed by Glenn Jorian with the quartet at Orchestra Hall on Michigan Ave., Chicago, long ago. Such talent. There may never be another Bill Pearce, music came down from Heaven to us to bless us forever.

I had the privilege of seeing Bill with Dick Anthony, the Melody Four Quartet, 16 Singing Men and others for several years in concert with Chuck Ohman at the Ford Auditorium in Detroit, MI. They had to do it there because Calvary Baptist of Hazel Park, MI couldn't house the crowds. My trombone playing was extremely influenced by Bill Pearce. The 2nd chair back then of the DSO could not believe how great a musician Bill was. My musical appreciation was greatly influenced by all these folks, but esp. Bill. I finally got to meet him personally at a concert in Sturgis, MI What a neat guy.

In the late 50's and early 60's, my mom, sister, and I used to go to Winona Lake from our home in Illinois, and it was a blessing. I grew up with Dick Anthony in Waukegan, Illinois, so his music and that of Bill Pearce, the Melody Four Quartet, and 16 Singing Men sustained me in my early Christian life. I include much more now--many songs with deeper truths--but these early recordings still touch my heart and turn it to the Lord. (I had most of the albums, too, but gave them up when I no longer had a turntable. Thank the Lord for KZread so we can still listen to these songs and hymns of praise!

@@janicewillis96 A few years ago when reading an interview with Bill about his experiences growing up and getting into music, I discovered that he and his family had lived in Lower Merion Township, PA and he had gone to Bala Cynwyd Junior High (now a middle school) in the LM School District. I couldn't believe it! Our family lived in Lower Merion, and I worked in the library at that very same school! I asked around in the music department about Bill and discovered that a very elderly retired music teacher whom I knew, Mr. Herman Giersch, had been Bill's instrumental music teacher when Bill was a student at BCJH, saw much promise in his trombone playing, and given Bill much helpful & encouraging instruction on the trombone (after he had given up on the clarinet). Mr. Giersch followed Bill's 'career' path as best he could, and later I believe I read somewhere else that Mr. Giersch had said something like, "NOBODY ever played the trombone like Billy!" He was absolutely right. You might enjoy reading the interview with Bill I mentioned above. It's fascinating! www.trombone.org/articles/view.php?id=105

I had the privilege of accompanying Bill on 3 songs in a concert at Messiah College in 1981. The truth is that he did not need any accompaniment and I was only providing basic chords so that he could weave a masterful solo line. As many professional musicians can do, his performance in these songs were unique from any of the recordings I had heard previously, particularly in his stylings in that wonderful upper range. One other place to find his playing is on a First Call Album. The song is "Forever in His Care" (Here is active link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rH9st9iplK-XdJM.html). I believe it was one of the last recordings that I am aware of. His solo is in the middle of the song, so if you've not heard that, you should take the time to listen - it is classic Bill on CD.

He was around 59 years old and he told the audience that he took an afternoon jog up and down Winston Avenue, in Latonia KY, that same day before the concert. He had a way with connecting with his audience. He had a nice set of pipes for singing base in quartets and larger groups.

Saw/heard Bill Pierce in concert many years ago, and someone who played duets with him at times, by the name of Jim Bos. I have often wondered about Jim, who was my choir director at that time. If you know anything about Jim and Margaret, and how their lives went, please message me through youtube. Margaret was a superb musician, too.

+Janis Hannes I too went to WBC and had Jim Bos as choir professor who shared Bill Pearce with us--the duets were soooo heavenly...Margaret passed away in 2007 from an aggressive form of breast cancer. Their son received a heart transplant a couple of years ago and is doing well. Jim has remarried Donna and they live outside Raleigh Durham NC. He is on Facebook and you can connect with him. His daughter Cindy Bos Carmichael is also on FB if you knew her...she plays a mean violin.

Thank you so much, MaBelleMichelle201 (I love your 'handle'.) I did find Jim on FB and left him a note, but he may not have remembered me. It appeared that he had remarried, so I wondered about Margaret. She, too, was so talented and lovely. What I remember about the family was the first litle boy, and then that they have a child with a heart defect of blood problem. I knew them early on at Grove Avenue Baptist Church in Richmond, Va. I also found the pastor of that church on FB, Vander Warner, and he had remarried also, so I've wondered what happened to the first wife, Jane. When I knew the Warners they had two daughters. It was very sad to hear about Margaret. I have her and Jim playing, singing, and I think Jim and I singing together, on an old reel-to-reel, which is being converted to a CD. Listening to that will be a welcomed blessing. Thank you with all my heart.

Thanks for uploading a vid of Bill Pearce! He was way ahead of his time as far as smooth trombone is concerned. And Bill was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ as witnessed by all the music he played that glorified the Lord. I have tried to emulate him, but for some reason, I can only go with jazz and make it "stick." He had a special "gift" IMO. HE WAS doing Watrous before Bill did it IMO.

Great job. His smoothness and phrasing would rival Tommy Dorsey.

Urbie had a bit of a smoother, slower and arier tone when going for the vibrato. To my ears at least, a little less reminiscent of the Tommy Dorsey-styled stuff. Still fantastic sounding players all around!

David Wright interestingly, urine cut off an inch of his slide to change pitch and it allowed him to use a vibrato between 1st and second position. pretty smart
