The 3 meals a day and big breakfasts made more sense in the old days when people did a lot of manual labor all day long and so they burned more calories. Today, most people sit at a desk.

There is being thin and then there is being strong. They don’t necessarily go together. When I switched from cleaning houses as a teen to a desk job in my 20’s I ate the same things but my weight did change gradually over the next two or three years to a new normal. As a cleaner I easily stayed at 120 but as a desk worker I fought to keep my weight below 135. So much of what we need to do these days to keep life going puts us in front of a computer which is by nature being still. I don’t think humans were meant to be so still all the time. Our bodies require movement to stay healthy. Thin may be healthier than obese but thin is less healthy than strength with endurance. My mom was always very thin but she liked to sit and read all the time and did not have a regular job. At the end, which was this last February, she had so many problems based on lack of muscle. I know that happens at the end of life as a frail elder but I think my mom would have lived another 10 years if she had been able to make herself just walk regularly for like 30 min 3 times a week. A lot of her health problems in the end had to do with poor circulation and a weak heart. She smoked until she was 45 and that really did not help but I think she could have brought herself back if she had been able to get herself to do just a little more exercise. I think we need to emphasize exercise over thinness. You don’t have to be healthy to be thin you just have to not eat very often. Sometimes thinness is a sign that we are not taking good care of ourselves but people take it the exact opposite way. Right now, I am in grief over my mother’s passing. Since she passed I have not had an appetite and I have dropped down to a size 4 again. People keep saying how great I look and asking what I am doing to maintain my figure. I tell them I have been on the “high stress, low self esteem diet”. 😂They think I am kidding. The truth is I am a very sad person who is having trouble the energy to properly feed myself. For the last 5 years of my mom’s life she was disabled and weighed only 98 pounds. She was a skeleton. Starvation is not health either. Especially when it comes to models in the 80-90’s anorexia was the beauty standard. I think this fat positive stuff is an over correction resulting from that madness. Everyone is lovable at any weight and LOVE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING.❤

A few things here, I am a 56 year old man, 5'8" 147-150 lbs, average BMI 22.5, resting heart rate 52 bpm. I am and ectomorph. My family are wiry, skinny Scots Irish. I eat what I please (red meat, potatoes, eggs etc., and very little in the way of greens). I eat when I am hungry and never eat more than feels comfortable. I think genetics play a big role in health, that said, I also exercise 6 days a week. Light weights, calisthenics, and 15-20 miles a day cycling the local trail. I should note I stopped drinking and smoking over 2 decades ago. I am a big proponent of being active and spending time outdoors, its not just for my physical health but activity keep my mood elevated.

A lot of people overeat because of stress. Have to wonder how old Bill would do if he commuted to a regular 8-5 job and stressed over his bills and how he was going to be able to afford to send his kids to college. Genetics doesn't actually play a part, that's a big lie. You don't shit out calories, neither do you breathe them out or sweat them out. The only way calories are leaving your body is by you burning them Genetics plays some part in how easy it is for you to build muscles that use energy and some part in how quickly you get hungry and all that, but the basic formula is: As long as you take in more calories than you use up, you're gaining weight. Parisians are probably moving more (= using more energy) and actually eating less than what you're comparing them to. I'm German and we're making fun of the French for their small breakfasts, yeah it's a croissant, but it's usually only one and they won't eat again til lunch. It's really not primarily about what you eat but how much. Especially how many calories are in it.

I kinda need some perspective on that genetics part, because I am more on the belief that it's more of the lifestyle. I'm from the Philippines. We do have obese people, but it is clear to us all those were outliers not because of genetics but because of the lifestyle they chose - eat all day and just be a bum all day too. I can eat all the fatty roast pig all I want but the worst I'll get is high blood pressure. My daily life and routine will never allow me to be fat. And back to your Paris example, they like to walk. I've been to Paris, and my colleague there was a Parisienne. She walked a LOT. She only took public transport only on distances that can't be covered by a brisk walk. She toured me around and 60% of the time, we walked. Thank God I had good sturdy feet.

It takes a lot for me to lose weight, but I finally found the magic combination. I have to do four things. 1. Low carb diet. No bread, no pasta, no sugar, no fruits besides berries, no starchy vegetables. Natural fats are quite healthy in moderation. Eat my fill of eggs, quality butter, high quality meat, salmon, white fish, avocados, olive and avocado oil, some nuts 2. Intermittent fasting. No eating for 16 hours out of 24. Basically, I skip breakfast except for black coffee. 3. Daily moderate exercise. Honestly, a 20 minute walk is fine. Just do it every day. Maybe one good hike on the weekend. 4. Moderate portions. This is the easiest part. By skipping meals your stomach gets smaller and it is easier to feel full. By doing all this I lost about 50 pounds in 6 months and all my labs, including cholesterol, vastly improved.

Why do you think people weren't fat a century ago, was there more knowledge of the intricacies of the human digestive system? I sort of eat like Maher does and I've lost a bit of weight since the beginning of the year (5-8 lbs or so--it's now early April). I was eating like him (same patterns) for a year or two and stayed the same weight but what got me to start finally losing weight after doing this was to cut down on the quantity (as Maher touched on). So, two meals a day, and concentrate on LESS during those two meals. I realized I was putting too much food in my body, and often eating after I was full. I guess eating more slowly helped deal with that. I suppose I have been following a typical intermittent fast type of diet. Where there is around a 16 hr window every day that I don't eat. It seems to work. After doing it for awhile your appetite seems to shrink and you are satisfied with less food. As of now, I'm doing no gym visits or home exercising, but am staying busy moving around working on my fixer-upper house. That constant moving or at the least not sitting on my ass all day helps. At some point when weather gets better I'll start cycling and doing resistance training (mainly just push-ups, other floor exercises and maybe a bit of weights) and that should help drop more lbs....of fat.

I'm pretty much trying to do the same. That's why I like the low-carb lifestyle with IF. When you eat twice a day, and fast for 16 hours, that fat/protein keeps you satiated. It's a very effective strategy. It wouldn't be nearly as easy if those two meals consisted of carbs. I think a cup of coffee (or two) goes a long way, as well, because of how it suppresses your appetite (if you even have one). Congratulations on your success so far, and thanks for sharing. It's always nice to come across some positivity in the comment section. :)

In the words of Dr. John Mc Dougall: "The fat you eat is the fat you wear". We are carb burning mammals and we store fat when we eat more than we need. So, it's not just about a calorie deficit. What we eat is very important because we can't outrun or out exercise a bad diet. Saturated fat clogs the arteries. Refined carbohydrates disrupt the system. Maher benefits because, by the sound of it, he doesn't over eat, he minimises animal consumption and doesn't actually eat a lot of fat or sugar. If he truly believed that "eating fat doesn't make you fat" ( which is absolute nonsense) and properly upped his fat intake (as many listening might do if they naively believed this) then Maher too would put on weight So, no big surprise then that he's slim and absolutely nothing in his regime to prove his theory that eating fat won't make you fat. Maybe we should test his regime against that of an actual fat person and see what food group they blame for their obesity. Maybe see if we can find one who eats minimal fat but still manages to wear fat all over their body!!! Fat makes you fat if you eat enough of it. Over time, it also makes you ill!

Americans are weirdly obsessed with rules when it comes to healthy eating. Even Maher, who is doing well apparently. "Don't eat bread" "Fat doesn't make you fat, carbs do" etc. Well, I eat mostly three times a day, because I'm usually hungry three times. I eat a lot of bread and noodles, which are pure carbs. I even eat quite a bunch of sweets. The point isn't to follow some set of rules and then everything will work out, the point is that the whole picture must work. Because I also go running and swimming for a total of 5 hours a week or more. I ride my bike for at least like 20kms a week because that's just the way to work. The problem in America is that your "normal" is so far off any healthy area; Almost everything had added sugar (for example all the bread like wtf, it's not cake, take the sugar out) and then you have no-fat milk as if that would do anything. A lot of you can't even bike to work because you need to cross the highway or drive through too many miles of suburbs. Unless you're in a sports club, you might not even have a place to do sports while I step out of the house onto a jaywalk and have like three parks within walking distance that are beautiful to run through. You drink soda or "sports drinks" because many of you don't even have drinkable water at home while in my country, the tab water is literally the most healthy stuff you can drink. The only reason carbs are worse than fat is because fat takes longer to digest and so you're full for a while, carbs are quick and easy and you'll get hungry again and thus eat more of them. You get fat because you eat or drink more calories than you expend.

'carbs make you fat' Um. They can but fat in your food is much more efficiently converted to body fat than carbs are. Calories from fat are much easier to over eat on as well as the calorie density is more than double of carbs. If you are eating too many carb calories, to a point, your body will turn up your metabolism a bit and you burn that off as body heat. Much easier to do that than for the body to convert excess "carbs" to body fat. Then, carb source matters as all are not the same. 100g of carbs from white sugar is maybe calorically the same as eating enough apples to get 400 calories from just carbs ( the same as 100g of sugar). However the packaging matters. Bill, I spend maybe 20 mins per day with weights, I eat 400grams of carbs per day, and I have a low a body fat as you appear to have and much more muscle. But my carbs are 85% or more from whole plant foods. Carbs is not carbs is not carbs. That kind of thinking is how you end up with retards comparing eating a banana and an apple to as being as "sugar loaded" as drinking a coke. When someone, even as smart as Bill is, or a Doctor, etc. speaks about "carbs" or not eating "carbs" just screams that they know nothing about nutrition or the very thing that they are speaking about. It's almost the same as when you hear someone say the word 'detox". If you hear that there is a 98% chance they are full of shit.

exactly, the body runs on carbs and prefers it. you just need to eat whole food carbs. fruit, whole grains and some vegetables are high in "carbs". but bill makes it sound like they will make fat. no, excess calories make you fat. it may be easier to get fat on processed junk carbs but that depends on what you compare it to. of course nuts are better. but if you cover your food in fats like butter and oil, you will get fat. donuts, fries and chips actually have more calories from fat.

You're wrong on one important point, yes, Fat has twice the calory density, but that doesn't mean it's easier to eat much of it because it's actually a lot harder to digest and less of it will fill you for longer. But the basic formula is still: Amount of calories eaten - amount of calories burned. Just don't overeat

I applaud Billy for staying fit and trim, but I wouldn't advise anyone to take his dietary advice -- "fat doesn't make you fat, carbs make you fat." Billy, the human body is designed to run on carbohydrates. And, a high fat diet can be hazardous to your health. But, if you want to follow a high fat diet, knock yourself out.

The problem is hyper-processed foods and excess fats, not carbs. If carbs made people fat, all the Asian people who traditionally eat mostly rice would be fat -- they are not. Traditional human diets are based on carbs (bread in the Middle East, potatoes and sweet potatoes in South America, rice in Asia, etc) and those people are slim and healthy -- or they were until the hyper-rich and processed Western diet got introduced into their countries. Bill is thin because he eats little, not because he doesn't eat carbs. Scientific studies show that people who follow keto diets and avoid carbs are most likely to die from all causes. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKCWyax7gJrZm9I.html
