    By Bill James' logic, the Red Sox shouldn't have spent the effort & money to sign JD Martinez. Do analytics have a place in sports? Sure. It should be a single factor that goes into making decisions, not the be all end all.

    My god, it's embarrassing watching the three of them all miss the point ENTIRELY. 1) Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, etc. are OBJECTIVELY replaceable. Obviously the sport was no worse before they came up. 2) He never said to replace players with fucking robots! If all of the players were replaced tomorrow, the fans would related to the NEW players. Again, just look at expansion teams! One day a city has a new team with new players they didn't care about the day before.

    This is an example of one of the problems in our country. The asshats who make money off of the backs of the workers, the people who actually provide the product, have no respect for them. Explains a lot. Sure there are some benefits to analytics, but most of it is white noise. Example: driving in a run is the most difficult thing to do offensively. Analytics belittles this most essential and difficult of tasks. Ask a pitcher when he is under the most stress. It is always with runners in scoring position. Enough of this nonsense. James outed himself as totally out of touch with the true beauty of the game. The announcers example of having James play as opposed to Mookie Betts was spot on.

    Ah I love it!!! After all these years, Bill James still has the ability to stir the pot!! Technically speaking, he is right!!! You can never predict the outcome of the future, but you can certainly have a voice and make an attempt to alter it,approach it differently, Sosa, Mcwire and Bonds used steroids, The Astros created a sign stealing scheme...what do you think they were looking for?! Looking back, those 3(and more) are replaceable, the Astros organization needs to take a hard look at the mirror and see how many of their players are replaceable(starting with Bergman and Altuve), Gattis pretty much stated the sentiment. It's ugly, but it's a fact, and the "die-hard right" population of baseball will have to accept that. Players are replaceable. How many players actually spend their whole careers with 1 team? If they are so great, if they are such a positive influence on the community, why don't they stay? Call it free agency, teams going through a re-org but it still applies to the fact, players are replaceable, fun fact is that today's players average over 4 teams per career, so, if that's not being replaceable, I don't know what is, Bill James is right.....again...

    As a fan of the show, I have to disagree with how Michael, Don, and Peter treat analytics. First of all, analytics aren't nerds, they just have a different approach toward the game. Not all analytics agree with Bill James because his logic is wrong. Heck even his own "analytical approach" is outdated. Not all analytics think players are replaceable. Not every analytics are like James or Brian Kenny who always make analytics look like arrogant nerds. Secondly, analytics is about making the percentage move based on data, and put the team in the best position to compete and win. It is not about predicting the outcome. No one can do that. A move based on numbers and statistics is still better than making a move because "I feel like it." Sometimes things just happen, c'est la vie. But that doesn't mean analytics is BS. Finally, Micheal should stop with this I agree with analytics thing. Clearly, you don't. You still use the old, useless stats like wins, batting average and RBI to determine if a player is good or not. That's baseball card referencing, not buying into analytics. Stop with the Aaron Boone is a believer of analytics thing. He's not. No analytics in their right mind would make the moves he did in the ALDS. Also, the "yankees are too reliant on homers" argument is just lazy. How did the Sox win? Homers in crucial spot. How did the Dodgers get to the world series? Homers. Astros of 2017, same thing.

  • @ellandecampbell6279

    @ellandecampbell6279

    5 жыл бұрын

    They are too reliant of home runs. When the Yankees didn't hit home runs, the offense was pretty much useless. The Red Sox and Astros have shown a consistent ability to generate runs other than hitting home runs. Analytics certainly have their place, but so does going with your gut in the right situations. Relying solely on either approach isn't the way to go. Like most things in life, the best approach is somewhere in the middle

  • @bennyice

    @bennyice

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@ellandecampbell6279 Appreciate your take, thanks. I'll give you that the Red Sox and the Astros are better at contact, but the most important thing is about making "quality" contact, by either inducing the most hard ones, or the least weak ones. That's what make them good. Again, being homer reliant is not the problem here, it is about making quality contact, getting on base, and avoiding strike outs. It is hard to hit against today pitching even if you only want to hit singles. As for the gut thing, I think the deprivation of the managers' will is a bit over-blown. The one thing that people is mistaken about analytics is the "script" thing. Actually, it is more like a binder of notes, indicating every players data and stats. Therefore, managers are still given the option to choose which stats they are buying into and which move would put the team in the best position to win in their opinion. Take game 3 of ALDS for instance, you have stats that suggest Lynn's repertoire works better against the red sox, but you also have stats that tells you Chad Green is better at generating whiffs. At the end of the day, managers still have to make the decision on which stats makes more sense to him.

    Relax, but its true. Sure, it would suck, but within a few years a new pecking order would materialize. Examples: If the NFL went on a long strike, people would watch college football & love it.

    I don't get the issue. If players were not replaceable, BB would have ended 150 years ago. These guys don't get it. He's not saying players aren't important. He's saying that they come and go, and that is called replaceable.
