Bill Gray Road - Cottonwood, AZ (Off-Road, Overland Adventure)

Backroad Trails presents Bill Gray Road in central Arizona.
This road begins just outside the town of Cottonwood and heads north on a wide and rocky road. The high-desert landscape is carpeted with shrubs and features a wide-angle perceptive of Sedona in the background.
The road narrows and climbs a mesa featuring a stunning view of the former mining colony of Jerome. It ends along the Verde River with lush vegetation canopies and chalky limestone cliffs before reaching the town of Clarkdale.

One thing I notice when driving around that area of Arizona is that I rarely see wild animals. Sometimes, I've seen some burros around Lake Pleasant and once some deer around Jerome. When I lived in Fountain Hills, I had often seen javelina, bobcat, cougars, coyote, rattlesnake, jack rabbit, gambel's guail and road runners. Up north of Payson, I've seen elk. Is it that there is so much off-road activity that they have been pushed out?

Hi there, I've lived in this area for 8 years, and I tend to think that because we have so many wide swaths of open land that the wildlife have space to be away from people. That being said, you will hear coyotes every night and see plenty of the other usual critters if you are in the right place at the right time, being quiet and observational.

How long a drive was that? (You missed adding a little circle on the cliff dwelling ruins viewable from the river and road leading to it.)

Hi, the drive can be done in a couple hours if you don't stop and in a few hours if you make stops. Regarding the red circle, are you referring to Tuzigoot? If so, I didn't pass those ruins, they are further down the road and I turned right to the river.
