The Bill Frisell Trio featuring Rudy Royston - drums, Thomas Morgan - bass
Few musicians in jazz have had as wide a range of influence as has the guitarist Bill Frisell. His conception, part jazz, part rock, part country and part free improvisation, has changed the way music sounds. From his early work with the avant guardist John Zorn, through his own beautiful early works on ECM, and into his deeply felt explorations into Americana, it’s been clear that Frisell is a special, gestural player. His work with the jazz drummer Paul Motian and the saxophonist Joe Lovano, is a milestone in jazz guitar. And the trio he’s bringing, with Thomas Morgan on bass and Rudy Royston on drums, is special, with Mr. Morgan an improvising musician with no real peers. Jazz drumming like this reminds me of what an art is. Listen to how much can be done with such a small kit.

I don’t know if anybody will read this, but there are an exceptionally astute and sensitive group of people commenting on this video. I recommend reading this comment section.
This is like Zen Jazz. Nothing is said/played that does not need to be played, and everything that is played is perfect for that moment, pearl after pearl, or drop after drop like rain. Truly amazing.

@@chadrew6 precisely wrong. There ARE actual rules. Musical laws. Only they who know them may break them. That's simply why McLaughlin shall remain forever 10,000 x your superior. heck, mine ? 20,000 x mine. hahahaha.. because you're gOOd, and I stink. but you do not hear the harmony. just the -how fast can i noodle- thing. Simply another level. Words cannot describe the beauty they all 3 create. Bill is up there with the greatest.
Rudy's sticks keep perfect time, moving the music with excitement. Flawless. Thomas's base outlines and grounds everything beautifully. Bill is his usual masterful self. What an iconic trio.

A quick Google search yields well crafted street scene paintings too. I'd never heard of him until now. As a painter and music lover, I appreciate this beautiful setting - the unfinished, rough hewn walls, the abstractions, and this insanely talented trio. Just dropped some hard earned money into Bill's pocket for some fresh vinyl via his website. Thanks for the artist's name.

That's what I noticed first. I expected Bill's genius, but those sticks were like feather strokes on the soul.
i am an indian from the southernmost state of india, have grown up all through these 60 years on a staple diet of music - of various kinds - from the classical carnatic music of south india, to the hard rock and everything in between at one time or the other... the music that bill frisell makes is like nothing else, and yet is like (almost) everything else you have heard across the spectrum... ! and what i find as the cornerstone of everything he creates, is MELODY - which is the queen emperor of any/all music. the *melodic* is that ultimate hallmark of a true music. bill's is a musical soul. hence the zen feel that so many below have so spontaneously felt and confessed here :) Grace - indeed !! god bless :)

As a musician how restrained Bill, sticking to the sound and harmonics, never showing off, ever so slightly varying, just so authentic. The music sounds simple but is profound. One feels joy, and gratitude. I don't know if I want to cry, sing or dance listening to this 😂

After listening to this guy for over 20 years, it just hit me -- it's not about style, technique, rhythm, harmony or even melody ... it's about connecting to people. Musician to musician, and the connection they're able to create to the listeners. That's what the greatest musicians/artists are able to do.
As a guitar player almost all my life, inspirations and idols came and went. But Bill stayed for good and he doesn't seem to ever go away.

I loved the word “comity” (friendly social atmosphere : social harmony) which the host used to describe Bill and his music.
Extremely delicate and intricate music. Feather light sounds charged with emotion. The more you listen, the more you immerse in its depths of light and air.
That artwork behind the band somehow perfectly compliments this style of music lol
Just the bass and guitar filling up all that melody and harmony. Restored my faith in humanity. Beautiful brothers. Pretty guitar.
“There’s a type of stillness in his music… Bill Frisell has grace.” Perfect.
Oh damn, that transition into what the world needs now is BUTTER
Rudy Royston has a rubber band around the beat. So good! And this music as a whole is what music is all about ever! Revelation!
This music fills me with happiness. What a wonderful moment.
The first time I heard Bill was on an episode of Camine Guitars on TV. The thing that I was stuck by was his gentle nature. He played Surfer Girl on a guitar fashioned from a salvaged piece of wood from an old New York building. What he offered was something that reached into the soul in a way that could only be described as an expression of pure love. Made me an instant fan.
Beautiful ! A cherished moment of dream in those dark crazy times. Thank you gentlemen.
"Bill Frisell has a unique ability to transform notes into emotions. His performance is a journey through musical landscapes ranging from jazz to avant-garde, and each note is like a sound painting that captures the imagination.
