This video is a transcription of Bill Evans from the movie "The Universal Mind of Bill Evans - Creative Process and Self-Teaching"
The original video can be found here: • Bill Evans - The Creat...
We all KNOW that there is no shortcut to greatness, but it is great to hear it from the "greats" that we truly admire.
I have transcribed both the words and the music and have kept both of these as close to the originally intended source.

Creating this video was an eye-opener for me. Short but powerful... *i made this video because one of my members, Natasha, was feeling overwhelmed on the amount of midi files she had and wanted to learn, but creating this ended up affecting me instead

Hey Natasha, glad you got around to seeing it. "building that foundation"--I think a big issue for all of us is moving on too quickly without realizing the need for mastering the small things. That and not going slow enough

What I see in this is,start slow and get the concepts down before moving forward. It may take a while, but it seems like it'll stick to you better. I've never transcribed anything. I was just thinking about this today

Interviewer is his brother, a piano teacher. Crazy story of the Evans brothers, and of course Bill is just phenomenal on the keys, that Green and Blue he did with Miles Davis is off it's head. Came across this interview last year when I was researching Bill and was truly inspired. Definitely worth watching the whole clip.

This is so on point. I find myself being too safe because of my own lack of vocabulary.

I think it is now more important than ever since we are exposed to so much more music and information compared to others who learned before being able to access basically all music and all theory within minutes. There is so much stuff to learn that no one would ever be able to master all of it and it is really difficult to constrain yourself to truly checking something out versus being amazed by concept after concept. You listen to Michel Camilo and think: wow this is so great I gotta get into Latin stuff. Then you listen to Robert Glasper: This is so amazing, I gotta learn it. That leads you to Herbie Hancock, to Brad Mehldau, to Beethoven, to Bach, to Coltrane, to Bird, you get the point. I think it is really hard to be honest to yourself and admit that even though we have access to everything, we are not able to master everything no matter how passionate and hard working we are.

I agree to 100%. I think also being PATIENT about the very basic concepts you are working on is one of the most important qualities you can have as a (self-learning) music student. I always have to remind myself to stick on them, to work on them extensively (like playing it in all keys and fully understand the concept behind it) rather to switch to the next exercise on KZread when you are "kind of" into it. Besides this I highly recommend watching the full documentary as there is a lot of wisdom in it.

Excellent analysis by the incomparable Bill Evans. Simplicity allows structure (almost like the steel skeleton of a skyscraper), then the finished product is awe-inspiring. I have practicing to do - lots of it. I am nowhere near where I want to be, but the goal is to get better each day.

Exactly, people need to study peoples chords but also their mindset!! That’s just as important!

Understanding the mindset is the big picture. There are several musicians I would love to converse with even if it's just 30 minutes. It can be over the phone, I just wanna know how they process

That’s what I’d like to know. Their mindset! Also, to know the musical vocabulary and musical banks and musical language (you get my picture) that they pull from and use to create their own sound. Also, what Bill Evans is playing in this clip is the SAME stuff you still hear today! BTW, it depends on the setting...I like the first version for the band playing, but the second for soloing.my preference would be the first one!

That example that he played made me realise that the diminished on the 4 is really just the dominant flat 9. The same is true for the diminished on the 2 which he plays when he does the walkup from the I to the IV. Its just the scale harmonised like Barry Harris does it.

Just found you today, Sean. I've seen the video before. Only other piano study I've looked at, (and purchased his pdf's, mp-3's, and youtube films) is Doug MeKenzie. His version of Strollin' by Horace Silver knocked me out. On youtube. Check it out. Evans played Baldwin's a lot.
